Vacuum Furnace for Global Wire Mesh Products Supplier in Auto Industry

A U.S.-based engineered knitted wire mesh solutions company and global supplier for the automotive, food service, and janitorial industries will receive a vacuum heat treat furnace. The furnace will be primarily utilized for vacuum annealing materials that are susceptible to adverse effects of their mechanical properties when exposed to any levels of oxygen or nitrogen.

This vacuum furnace features a molybdenum shielded hot zone measuring 18” wide x 18” high x 36” deep. It is capable of operating temperatures up to 2400°F and has a workload weight capacity of up to 1,000 lbs. Additionally, it includes the SolarVac® Essentials PLC-based control system. The internal gas cooling system with a 50 HP drive motor can reach quenching workloads at 2-bar positive pressure in either nitrogen or argon.

Jason Davidson, regional sales manager at Solar Manufacturing, states, “Our customer started running trials with our affiliate commercial heat treater, Solar Atmospheres. Once the trial results proved the heat treat cycle, and the [Mentor® Pro Model HFL-3036-2IQ] furnace demonstrated it could process the required quantities, the customer had confidence to place the purchase order with us.”

Solar Atmospheres Increases Heat Treat Capacity for Superalloys

Solar Atmospheres of Souderton PA commissioned a new vacuum furnace capable of utilizing high pressure gas quenching (HPGQ) at 20-Bar (about 300 PSI) to meet demanding cooling rate specifications for the heat treatment of nickel-based superalloys in the aerospace and power generation industries.

The vacuum furnace, manufactured by sister company Solar Manufacturing, has a working hot zone of 24” x 24” x 72” and utilizes unique hot zone design features to increase the quench rate. The furnace is rated for operation to 2400°F and temperature uniformity plus/minus 10°F.

Mike Moyer, vice president of Sales at Solar Atmospheres comments, “The furnace utilizes a 600-HP cooling motor and fan with a creative gas nozzle design to maximize gas flow as it moves through the hot zone and the heat exchanger and back across the workload.”

Equipment Chatter

  1. The precision forging manufacturer Jiangsu Pacific Precision Forging Company has placed an order with SMS group for a fully automatic MP 3150 eccentric closed-die forging press. Pacific Precision will be able to forge aluminum chassis components on a much larger scale. This new expansion provides Pacific Precision with access to the growing automotive market segment for more lightweight designs.
  2. A commercial heat treater in Mexico purchased a third vacuum furnace from SECO/WARWICK Group.
  3. Ecocat India, a catalyst manufacturer, has ordered an advanced technology vacuum gas cooling furnace from SECO/WARWICK. The system will carry out brazing and annealing processes.
  4. Several new CAB lines have been ordered from SECO/WARWICK to be delivered to manufacturers in China. Two companies specifically chose EV/CAB lines while another manufacturer purchased a CAB line.
  5. SECO/WARWICK delivered two CAB lines and one universal chamber furnace for aluminum brazing to an automotive manufacturer in China. The systems will braze large-size coolers for vehicle batteries.
  6. Oetzbach Edelstahl GmbH, a hardening plant, has purchased a third furnace from SECO/WARWICK.
  7. A Swiss commercial heat treater ordered a brazing furnace to be used for nickel and silver from SECO/WARWICK.
  8. Tenova LOI Thermprocess has completed the production optimization of a new Twin-Chamber Melting Furnace (TCF®) at E-Max Billets in Kerkrade, the Netherlands.
  9. An Asian thread rolling die conglomerate selected a SECO/WARWICK vacuum furnace. The Vector® will be used for vacuum hardening and tempering fastener dies.

  1. Hubbard-Hall has expanded its product offering and customer resources by acquiring the assets of Torch Surface Technologies, a specialty chemical company based in Whitmore Lake, MI.
  2. New simulation software is being launched at CENOS Simulation Software. The application portfolio expands with some new electromagnetic case software apps. The first apps will be launched in Q4 or a little later.
  3. Solar Atmospheres of California announced it has been awarded the approval to process parts for Lockheed Martin (LMCO) owned Sikorsky. The Sikorsky approval adds to the existing LMCO process specifications held for vacuum heat treatment of titanium, nickel alloys, and stainless steel per AMS 2801, AMS 2774, AMS 2759/3, and others.
  4. Nel Hydrogen US, a subsidiary of Nel, has entered into a joint development agreement with General Motors to help accelerate the industrialization of Nel’s proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer platform. The two companies are looking to enable more cost competitive sources of renewable hydrogen.
  5. The Supervisory Board of thyssenkrupp AG extended the appointment of Oliver Burkhard by five years. Burkhard has been a member of the Essen-based group's Executive Board since February 2013, Thyssenkrupp AG director of Labor since April 2013, and additionally CEO of thyssenkrupp Marine Systems since May 2022.
  6. Joe Coleman, cyber security officer of Bluestreak Consulting™, has earned his Cyber AB CMMC Certification as a Registered Practitioner (RP). CMMC is a U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) program that applies to Defense Industrial Base (DIB) contractors.
  7. CG Thermal welcomes associate process engineer Signe Laundrup to the Process Systems Group. Laundrup is a 2021 chemical engineering graduate from the University of California, San Diego. Her background is in manufacturing and research and design.
  8. Tata Steel signed a memorandum of understanding with SMS Group to reduce carbon emissions at Tata’s integrated steel plants across India.
  9. Two heat treat technology companies integrate: C3 Data’s real-time pyrometry compliance software enables digital uploading of certificate data of all TT Electronics.
  10. Ipsen Japan announced the addition of Mr. Masakazu Kanaka in the role of customer service director. Kanaka is responsible for the growth of all Ipsen Japan customer service business, which includes retrofits, parts, and service. He will oversee the aftermarket sales team and field service engineers.
  11. Solar Atmospheres of California announced Honeywell approval to heat treat austenitic steels, martensitic steels, pH steels, tool steels, nickel alloys, cobalt alloys, titanium alloys, and magnetic alloys.
  12. Aluplast – ZTG, an Altest company, recently expanded its production capacity with a second Nitrex nitriding system. The second furnace, a model N-EXT-612, is capable of processing a load of extrusion dies weighing up to 1300lbs.

  14. Metal Exchange Corporation announced that Matt Rohm, current President and Chief Operating Officer (COO), will be promoted to Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Metal Exchange Corporation effective January 1, 2023.   16. Abbott Furnace Company announced that it has partnered with Obsidian Technical Group for sales and service support across much of the eastern United States.
  17. Robert Roth announced the appointment of Nelson Sanchez as RoMan’s new president, effective January 1, 2023. Sanchez is the first non-family member to hold the office.

A western PA heat treater recently degassed 175,000 pounds of 6AI-4V titanium in their 48-foot-long vacuum furnace. This is the largest and heaviest single load of titanium ever processed in the company's history.

Solar Atmospheres of Western PA vacuum degassed the load consisting of 154 sheets of titanium 40” x 240”. Their president, Bob Hill, states, “The future of the global aerospace titanium market is very promising with the many opportunities in the commercial and military aircraft markets!”

New Vacuum Furnace for Michigan Heat Treater

Solar Atmospheres of Michigan took delivery of a new vacuum furnace this week, which will be used primarily for aerospace applications. The Chesterfield, MI, location is set to begin heat treating later this year.

The furnace has a working hot zone of 36” wide x 36” high x 48” deep and can handle workloads up to 5,000 lbs. To power this furnace along with nine other vacuum furnaces, a new 2600kVA transformer was installed. The new facility anticipates being fully operational by the fall of 2023 and will gather all of Solar Atmosphere's Michigan heat treating under one roof.

Car Bottom Heat Treat Furnace Installed in CA

Solar Atmospheres of California (SCA) installed a new 14 foot long car bottom air furnace. With a maximum operating temperature of 1450°F, this furnace tempers large tool steel components, age hardens 15-5 PH, 17-4 PH, 13-8PH and nickel-based alloys, and anneals titanium forgings.

SCA is typically known around the world as a “vacuum only” heat treater. However, there is a great need for heat treating non finished parts and materials in accordance with the same specifications (AMS, MIL, Boeing, and Airbus) within different atmospheres where surface oxidation is permissible. This furnace allows for a “raw material” option.

“Solar Atmospheres of California is excited to be adding this new furnace and the added capability/capacity," stated Derek Dennis, president of SCA. The furnace has a working zone that is 60" square by 168" long with a total load capacity of up to 30,000 pounds.

Massive H13 Extrusion Dies Heat Treat Hardened for Ohio Companies

Two large H13 extrusion dies for two separate companies were vacuum heat treated in a high pressure gas quench vacuum furnace that fully hardened the dies in successive cycles.

Solar Atmospheres, using a furnace from Solar Manufacturing, provided two Ohio companies as-quenched dies with hardness of HRC 50-52 using nitrogen as the quench gas. The hollow die was 30” outer diameter x 15” inner diameter x 103” long and weighed 16,000 pounds. The solid die, belonging to a different customer, was 34” outer diameter x 64” long and weighed 14,000 pounds. Post-quench each component was triple air tempered resulting in a final hardness of HRC 46-48.

The 10-bar 600 HP high pressure vacuum furnace permits the company to obtain the desired cooling rates, commented Mike Johnson, director of sales at Solar Atmospheres.

Some operators or leak checking personnel will often use a stethoscope when checking for leaks, as its ability to transmit low-volume sounds and eliminate external noise is exceptional. Often in gross leaks or some smaller leaks, a standard paint brush and soapy wash solution is helpful. Brush the solution around suspected leak areas. Big leaks will blow big bubbles at the leak while smaller leaks will form very fine foam.

Heat Treater’s New Switch Saves Production Run Time

HTD Size-PR LogoSolar Atmospheres in Souderton, Pa, has had an automatic disconnect switch installed into a production car bottom vacuum furnace. The switch saves time by eliminating the manual maneuver of disconnecting and then re-connecting the power terminal bars at each end of the car bottom during each production run.

The switch, from Solar Manufacturing, Inc., is rated for 1,000 amps, 50V AC per pole, and the switches are installed at each end of the hot zone. Not only have the disconnect switches performed as well as expected since installation at Solar Atmospheres Souderton, PA, location, but they also have improved production.
