Forging

Forging refers to a variety of thermal and mechanical processes that give a material a desired shape. In the most basic sense, forging is applying force on a metal, usually in a die or cavity, to change its shape and, by the nature of the process, its internal properties. Materials typically require some form of heat treatment (e.g., normalizing) after forging to negate the effect of flow lines and achieve higher fatigue resistance and strength.
