A new update on MPIF Standard 35 was issued in October 2017 by the Metal Powder Industries Federation (MPIF) for aluminum alloys often used in aerospace applications, providing design and materials engineers with performance requirements for specifying aluminum alloys in powder metallurgy. The new standards identify a Rockwell hardness of 75 for the AC-2014-32-T8 and 83 for the AC-2014-38-T8, values which refer to the heat treatment which the alloys undergo.

Certified Heat Treating Acquired by Baltimore Investment Group

An Ohio-based company providing heat treatment for the general manufacturing market, Certified Heat Treating, has been acquired by Thermal Process Holdings, an investment vehicle formed by Calvert Street Capital Partners (CSCP).

“We are excited to announce the second acquisition in our strategy to build a best-in-class company that offers a range of advanced services. The Biehn family wanted to ensure the continued success of the business and to provide opportunities for their people. We are intent on carrying out those objectives,” said John Hubbard, chairman of Thermal Process Holdings.

Don Longenette, who has been director of facilities and maintenance with Diamond Heat Treat, another recent acquisition of CSCP, will serve as general manager of Certified during the transition, which will include overseeing vacuum heat treating, atmosphere heat treating, induction heat treating, carburizing, oil and neutral hardening, among other treatments, at the company’s Springfield, Ohio, facility.

“The operating history of Certified dates to 1959, and the company has a solid reputation in the broad spectrum of industries it serves. We look forward to building on that reputation and growing the business. I’m excited to work with Joe Biehn [president of Certified Heat Treating], who will immediately focus his full attention on driving additional sales. Our goal with Certified is to utilize the exceptional quality of the equipment, the expertise and experience of the employees, and to take advantage of the open capacity of the furnaces,” said Longenette.

Calvert Street is a Baltimore, Maryland-based private equity firm focused on investing in industrial service businesses in the lower middle-market. Thermal Process Holdings builds upon Calvert Street’s experience in other high-value add industrial sectors, including testing and inspection and precision machining.

Heat Treatment Processes Lead Way for Seamless Pipe Mill Startup

A $1.8 billion state-of-the-art seamless pipe mill was unveiled before local, state, and federal representatives in Bay City, Texas, last month, following early startups of the heat treatment and finishing areas and successful test runs of the complete hot rolling process.

Tenaris, a global supplier of tubes and related services for the energy industry and certain other industrial applications, produced its first seamless pipe at the facility in October. The 1.2 million sq ft mill is strategically located near key shale plays and has the capacity to produce 600,000 tons of OCTG, annually, which will be shipped directly to customer rig sites or stored at Tenaris service centers in Bay City, Freeport, Midland or Oklahoma.

The launch ceremony in December included U.S. Department of Energy Secretary Rick Perry and Texas Governor Greg Abbott, Tenaris customers, community members, and employees.

“TenarisBayCity shows our commitment to domestic manufacturing, competitively supplying the US oil and gas industry,” said Paolo Rocca, Tenaris Chairman and CEO. “This mill, which incorporates the most advanced technologies available worldwide, will lead our domestic industrial and service network dedicated to the US market.”

“Wherever Tenaris pipes go, jobs will follow. This company is fulfilling the promises it has made,” said Secretary Perry.

Heat Treatment Involved in Advanced Magnesium Alloy Development

Researchers from the Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology and Nanyang Technological University have devised a method that involves heat treatment processes to strengthen magnesium alloy and produce a more workable, ultra-fine crystalline structure suitable for multiple applications, including aerospace, automotive, transportation, medical and technology.

“By optimizing the processing temperature and strain rate, we were able to achieve an ultrafine-grained microstructure, which does not physically change the alloy, but improves its mechanical properties through grain refinement,” reported Kai Soon Fong, Senior Research Engineer at Singapore Institute of Manufacturing. “This processing led to improved mechanical strength and ductility, making it tougher and easier to shape at room temperature.”

A cast link belt furnace more than 22 meters in length with a performance of two tons of forged parts per hour went to Hirschvogel. Sacotec's order was for a shaft furnace for carburization of small parts.

  • An electrically heated, gas nitriding, pit furnace with an ammonia dissociator system for heat treating parts has been shipped to a technology manufacturer by Lindberg/MPH.  The pit furnace has a maximum temperature rating of 1250°F and work chamber dimensions of 28" diameter x 36" depth.
  • Shougang Jingtang United Iron & Steel, China, contracted Fives to design and supply a new galvanizing line furnace and inductors dedicated to the production of ultra high-strength steels at its Caofeidian facility. This is the sixth Fives furnace at this location.

In the summer of 2017, Solar tookdelivery of a new Tinius Olsen 300SL Universal testing machine, as well as a new Haas Model TL-1 CNC lathe in order to custom machine test specimens. Arconic Divests, Hydro Acquires Latin American Extrusions Plants

Lightweight metals engineering and manufacturing firm Arconic, headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, recently announced that a global integrated aluminum solutions company will acquire its Latin American extrusions business, located in Brazil, part of the company’s transportation and construction solutions segment.

Hydro Extruded Solutions AS, formerly Sapa, which produces extruded shapes (standard and custom), seamless and structural pipe & tube, and standard and specialty rod and bar, noted in a company release that the transaction will expand its capacity to provide solutions for its manufacturing sectors in Brazil. Arconic is divesting two extrusion plants in Utinga and Tubarão in southern Brazil as part of its strategy to streamline assets and production; the assets include one casthouse, seven extrusion presses ranging from 7 to 14 inches, and value-added capabilities.

“We believe in the integrated business model and Brazil is the country where Hydro’s entire value chain is present. From bauxite and alumina, via primary production to extruded solutions, this will strengthen our ability to serve our customers,” said Svein Richard Brandtzæg, president and CEO.

Completion of the transaction is subject to approval from relevant competition authorities in Brazil and is expected within the first half of 2018.

Taiwanese automotive parts and fastener manufacturer Sumeeko Industries Co Ltd, which recently commissioned its first in-house heat treatment line, is progressing in its acquisition of Max Mothes GmbH, a Neuss, Germany-based logistics and packing facility, as well as VSP Fasteners SpA, an Italian hot and cold forger, according to Alex Chen, managing director of Sumeeko, and reported by Fastener + Fixing Magazine.

Cordierite Options Expanded for Heat Treat Applications

A manufacturer of cordierite kiln furniture for the ceramics industry and other industrial heat-treatment applications, IPS Ceramics USA, recently launched two grades of cordierite: a porous cordierite (C520)  for thermal shock resistance and use at higher temperatures, and a non-porous cordierite (C410).

Cordierite ceramics are well known for their exceptional resistance to thermal shock. They are often used for components that are subject to rapid thermal cycling, in applications where other ceramic materials would quickly crack or break. This can include anything from high-performance kiln furniture to catalytic converter honeycombs.

Cordierite products are fired close to 1,400°C (2,550°F) to give a material that is volume stable in service (temperatures up to 1,300°C/2,370°F). Products are thermally and electrically insulating and are often used as lead-in tubes or as supports for wire heating coils.

PA-Based Heat Treater Contracts with Zhongwang

A forged and cast rolls producer for steel and aluminum manufacturers was recently selected by a Chinese manufacturer of high-end aluminum flat-rolled products to supply rolls for a new hot rolling mill installation that services the transportation sector.

The western Pennsylvania-based Union Electric Steel Corporation, an operating subsidiary of Ampco-Pittsburgh Corporation, announced that the $4.4M agreement with Zhongwang (Yingkou) High Precision Aluminum Industry Co., Ltd, includes forged finishing work rolls and forged roughing work rolls produced at one of the Union Electric Åkers heat treating facilities. The successful agreement follows several trials conducted at Zhongwang Aluminum’s facility in Wuqing District, Tianjin Province. Shipments are expected to begin in the first quarter of 2018.

“The agreement adds another accredited, large new aluminum mill to our customer list,” said Rodney Scagline, president of Union Electric Steel. “Supplying the rolls needed for this new mill is an encouraging win for us, demonstrating our growing presence among major aluminum rolling mills around the world which require the most demanding, high-quality rolls.
