PA-Based Heat Treater Expands with New Vacuum Bay

A heat treater with facilities in Pennsylvania and Alabama was recently given the green light by township officials in Lansdale, Pennsylvania, to expand operations at its plant outside Philadelphia, including the construction of a new vacuum bay and the acquisition of vacuum furnaces needed for a new product line.

Rex Heat Treat provides thermal processing in Lansdale and Bedford, Pennsylvania, and in Aniston, Alabama, for customers from a broad range of industries.

“This facility improvement will provide the proper climate-controlled environment to enable Rex Heat Treat to offer lower cost vacuum heat treating solutions to the Philadelphia heat treating market and be a platform for further vacuum processing expansions,” stated Johnathan Rex, General Manager.

Delta Air Lines, Airbus Group Select Engine, First Order for 100 A321neo Aircraft

A global aircraft engine manufacturer recently announced Delta Air Lines and Airbus Group selected the company’s Geared Turbofan™ (GTF) engine to power Delta’s order of A321neo aircraft.

Pratt & Whitney, a division of United Technologies Corp., also released that the order consists of 100 firm aircraft and includes a 20-year EngineWise™ services agreement. Aircraft deliveries are expected to begin in the first quarter of 2020.

Delta currently operates a fleet of more than 350 aircraft powered by Pratt & Whitney engines, including the JT8D, PW2000, PW4000 and V2500 engines.

Metals Supplier’s Expansion Includes Heat Treat Equipment

A Michigan-based supplier of custom copper, aluminum, and other non-ferrous metal forging recently broadened its investment in equipment and facilities, including a size expansion to a furnace for heat treating.

Weldaloy Products Company serves aerospace, astrospace, electronics, oil and gas, and other industries, providing heat treating, as well as product development, drafting, machining, packaging, non-destructive testing, and material conversion. Among other additions, a 2,000-ton press has undergone a modernization of its hydraulic system, including pumps, motors, and controls, upgraded ring roller controls. Weldaloy will be expanding its campus in Warren, Michigan, through acquiring two adjacent manufacturing facilities.

“These investments allow us to meet the needs of our customers,” said Kurt Ruppenthal, Weldaloy’s vice president and general manager. “Specifically, we’re increasing our capabilities as a supplier to the aerospace and astrospace markets.”

Texas Steelmaker Acquires Rebar and EAF Mills from Gerdau

Four electric arc furnace (EAF) steel mills in Knoxville, Tennessee; Jacksonville, Florida; Sayreville, New Jersey; and Rancho Cucamonga, California, as well as 33 rebar fabrication facilities are among the assets included in an acquisition agreement between steelmaker Commercial Metals Co. (CMC), located in Irving, Texas, and Brazil-based steelmaker Gerdau S.A..

CMC operates heat treating and related facilities in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Alabama, in addition to steel mills, fabrication facilities, and other operations throughout the world. The mills and facilities included in Gerdau’s divestment have annual rolling capacity of 2.5 million tons, increasing CMC’s global melt capacity to 7.2 million tons.

“This acquisition aligns with our strategy to focus on our strength in concrete reinforcing products and leverages CMC’s core competencies in rebar production and value-added fabrication services to non­residential construction customers,” said Barbara Smith, president and CEO of CMC. “In addition, these assets provide us the opportunity to optimize our product mix more fully in the U.S. As a leader in rebar manufacturing technology and customer service, we are excited to take advantage of our expertise to increase throughput, lower costs and improve the customer experience in our new operations.”

The deal, which is expected to close before the end of 2018, would leave Gerdau with three fabrication shops in the U.S..

Alcoa Closes Rockdale, Italian Smelting Sites Sold

Global manufacturer of bauxite, alumina and aluminum products Alcoa Corporation recently announced its decision to close its Rockdale Operations facility in Texas, an action that expects a cash outlay of approximately $53 million over the next five years. The site, which has been fully curtailed since the end of 2008, includes a primary aluminum smelter and casthouse, an aluminum powder plant, and associated buildings and equipment.

The closure falls under an option to close or divest of smelting assets in the United States and Italy. In Italy, Alcoa has reached an agreement to divest the Portovesme primary aluminum smelter, fully curtailed since 2012 and closed since 2014, to Invitalia, the Italian government agency that manages economic development.

A high-end producer of high-pressure aluminum die casting, plastics, and machining, with locations in the United States, Germany, Mexico, and Japan, recently announced that construction on a manufacturing facility in Alabama will begin spring 2018.

3D Printing Aligns with Metal Manufacturing for Serial Production

Additive Industries and SMS group announced during the last quarter an agreement to develop and jointly market a production system for additive manufacturing on an industrial scale, aligning the manufacture of metal and 3D printing, encompassing design, development, and delivery of the finished component.

“The entire process is designed for maximum productivity, with the result that additive manufacturing can finally enjoy competitive success in serial production,” said Guido Kleinschmidt, member of the managing board of SMS group.

“Five years ago, we started with the development of the world’s first 3D metal printer for high-end production applications, ” said Daan A.J. Kersten, CEO of Additive Industries. “Today, with our MetalFAB1, we are accelerating industrial additive manufacturing as one of the industry’s leading technology suppliers. In SMS group we have found a partner who has experience in planning production complexes such as these and delivering them on a turnkey basis.”

The process starting point is the manufacture of powder. To ensure maximum purity, the alloys are induction-melted under vacuum in the crucible. The liquid metal is atomized using pure argon in an oxygen-free atmosphere. “The quality of the powder manufactured is crucial for the quality of the finished product. To enable us to make faster progress in powder production, we are building an industrial-scale pilot system, which is scheduled to go live at the end of the year,” said Markus Hüllen, vice president 3D Competence Center at SMS group.

The powder manufacturing process is followed directly by 3D printing. In the integrated MetalFAB1 system, the metal powder bed fusion process is applied to melt the powder in a reproducible and efficient way. After additively manufacturing the parts, the build plate with parts is automatically transported to the heat treatment furnace for a stress relief cycle before storage by a robot. The MetalFAB1 system is designed to run autonomously 24/7 without the need for multiple shifts, substantially reducing cost.

SMS group is also responsible for the heat treatment of the printed components for setting of improved material characteristics for product destined largely for the automotive industries.

Pipeline Repair Project to Use ATI’s Nickel-Based Alloy Product

A Pittsburgh-based, global manufacturer of technically advanced specialty materials and complex components recently announced that it has been selected to supply the nickel-based alloy product for a large oil pipeline project. Allegheny Technologies Incorporated (ATI) expects to begin shipping during the first quarter 2018.

“This oil pipeline repair project required an immediate replacement. The customer selected our innovative solution that is enabled by the capabilities of our Hot-Rolling and Processing Facility (HRPF), which features the industry’s shortest production cycle time for nickel-based alloy flat-rolled products,” said Bob Wetherbee, executive vice president, ATI Flat Rolled Products Group.
