Steel Expansion in Kentucky Increases Production Tonnage, Coil Width

 

A steel manufacturer with operating facilities throughout the U.S. and Canada recently announced plans to expand the production capability of its flat-rolled sheet steel mill located in Ghent, Kentucky.

Nucor Corporation’s Board of Directors approved an investment of $650 million to increase the production capability from 1,600,000 tons to approximately 3,000,000 tons annually and will increase the maximum coil width to approximately 73 inches. The project is expected to create 70 full-time jobs.

This expansion supports the current construction of a hot band continuous pickle galvanizing line at Nucor Steel Gallatin.  The pickle galvanizing line is expected to be operational in the first half of 2019 and will produce approximately 500,000 tons per year of galvanized hot band steel. Nucor continues to evaluate additional expansion projects as part of the company’s initiative to further grow its sheet business.

“This investment is another major component of our planned strategy for long-term profitable growth,” said John Ferriola, Chairman, CEO & President of Nucor. “Together with the new galvanizing line, this expansion increases our presence in the important Midwest market, specifically in the automotive, agriculture, heavy equipment, and energy pipe and tube sectors.” Nucor acquired the former Gallatin Steel Company in late 2014 for a purchase price of approximately $780 million.

Italian Line of Industrial Heating Burners Launched in U.K.

A burner manufacturer and distributor recently established an Italian-based heating solutions brand in the U.K.

EOGB Energy Products will supply Baltur’s commercial and industrial boilers and burners, expanding their range of Baltur products for domestic, commercial and industrial heating needs. Under the arrangement, EOGB will market, sell and support Baltur’s extensive range of commercial and industrial boilers and burners under the Baltur brand. Previously, EOGB had been Baltur’s sole distributor in the UK for their burner range only.

EOGB has been supplying Baltur’s oil, gas, and dual-fuel burners since 2000 and will continue to provide these products, whilst also adding a comprehensive range of commercial heating boilers to its portfolio.

Canadian Heat Treater Expands Production Capability with UBQ, UBT Furnaces

 

A Canadian commercial heat treater has expanded their heat treatment production capability with the purchase of two furnaces, installed at the company’s newly built manufacturing facility in Chateauguay (suburb Montreal) and to be used for general heat treating.

Thermetco of Montreal, the largest commercial heat treater in Quebec, purchased a new UBQ (Universal Batch Quench) furnace and a new UBT (Universal Batch Temper) furnaces from Michigan-based industrial furnace manufacturer AFC-Holcroft to serve customers in the automotive, aerospace, energy and petrochemical industries. The equipment offers the capability of providing metallurgical processes such as carburizing, carbonitriding, annealing, tempering, stress relieving, and other processes.

“The Thermetco team has a history of building thermal processing equipment in the past and were able to quickly identify many of the key factors that make the UBQ an industry leader, including recovery rates, maintainability, Batchmaster™ controls, Remote Diagnostics™, energy saving high/low endo flow, multiple speed quench, etc.,” said Tracy Dougherty, sales manager at AFC-Holcroft. “This order marks the first purchase of AFCHolcroft equipment by Thermetco. We’re very excited about the opportunity to be a part of the Thermetco expansion plans.”

Thermocouple Wire Manufacturing Line Changes Hands

A Florida-based manufacturer of thermocouple, resistance, and custom wire recently acquired a portion of the insulated thermocouple manufacturing business from a  technology and manufacturing company that provides thermal products and systems to heat treating operations within the automotive, aerospace, defense, and medical industries worldwide.

Pelican Wire has completed the purchase of a portion of the SERV-RITE business from Watlow Electric, based in St. Louis, Missouri. The agreement includes equipment, design and manufacturing process information and customer account data.

“I’m excited to work with our long-time partner, Watlow Electric, to provide their customers continued superior service for these high-temperature thermocouple products,” said Ted Bill, president, Pelican Wire. “This is a great example of Pelican Wire’s ongoing commitment to the thermocouple wire industry.”

As quoted from the August 31, 2018 “End of Life” (EOL) statement, “Watlow has already begun transferring both design and manufacturing knowledge of the product line to Pelican Wire. Pelican Wire already manufactures these constructions, so the transition is expected to be seamless.”

Pelican Wire will begin quoting and accepting orders on new and existing wire designs on September 17, 2018, and will begin manufacturing operations on or before October 15, 2018.

A global engineering firm based in Maumee, Ohio, recently announced that it has been selected by a German multinational automotive corporation to supply front and rear propshafts to the all-new Mercedes-Benz X-Class pickup truck and latest generation Sprinter van.

Annealing Furnace Contracted for Belgium Plant

A Belgian stainless steel producer recently contracted with a plant supplier to the metallurgical industry to provide an annealing and pickling line for stainless steel cold strip.

SMS group will deliver the line to Aperam Stainless at its Genk plant in Belgium. Production start is scheduled for 2020. With this investment in state-of-the-art and future-oriented plant technology, Aperam will enlarge its product range by material grades for the most demanding applications and improve lead time and flexibility to meet the market demand.

The line will be equipped with a horizontal Drever annealing furnace and a multi-stage pickling section in addition to a four-high skin-pass mill stand and a side trimmer. The new annealing and pickling line will be the fourth one SMS group is going to install at Aperam’s Genk site.

The line will process both austenitic and ferritic grades.

UK MRO to Open Component Maintenance Center with Heat Treating, Hardness Testing

A leading independent Maintenance Repair & Overhaul (MRO) provider in the U.K. prepares to open a new Component Maintenance Centre in Northampton, England, with operations planned to start this month.

Monarch Aircraft Engineering (MAEL) has invested approximately £2 million in this new center, which will include heat treating lines compliant to industry standard for standard processing and detail fabrication requirements, as well as hardness testing.

Today’s Technical Tuesday is a helpful article from Control Engineering about burners for gas-fired heat treating furnaces, their differences and how they are best utilized in different heat treating applications, technological advances in controls engineering, and combustion safety. The article draws on the skills and knowledge of several in the industry who have contributed to the advances and development in burner manufacturing, operation, and safety.

Aerospace Giant Signs Multi-Year Contract for Aluminum Solutions

A European provider of aluminum products and solutions announced recently that it has signed a multi-year agreement with The Boeing Company to support its leading commercial airplane programs. With this agreement, Constellium, based in The Netherlands, will supply Boeing with a broad range of advanced aluminum-rolled products coming mostly from its plant in Ravenswood, West Virginia.

“This new contract reflects the strong relationship established over the years with Boeing,” said Ingrid Joerg, President of Constellium’s Aerospace and Transportation business unit. “We look forward to continuing to support Boeing in its commercial airplane programs.”

Fastener Maker for Auto Industry Commissions Large Heat Treating Line

 

A leading supplier of fasteners to the automotive industry recently commissioned a cast link belt furnace for the refinement of high-strength steel screws and nuts.

AICHELIN, headquartered in Vienna, Austria, will deliver the heat treating plant by December 2018 to fastener-maker Bulten’s Swedish Hallstahamar site. This is the second industrial furnace plant for this facility. The plant line, produced in Austria, measures over 260 feet (80 m) long and weighs nearly 40,000 pounds (over 50,000 counting liquids and components).

The electrically heated high-temperature hardening furnace and the protective-gas-tight tempering furnace will be delivered with oil or emulsion hardening baths. Measuring and switching systems are included, as well as the process control system FOCOS 4.0 for the new plant (as well as an update of the data acquisition of the existing plant) and a protective gas generator.
