Ion Nitriding of Titanium Alloys for Gear Applications

BOTW-50w  Source:  Thermal Processing for Gear Solutions
The advantages of ion nitriding heat treatments in many low-alloy steels and titanium alloy gears used in high-performance applications include resisting wear and fatigue.

Thermochemical surface engineer heat treatments are effective in improving the performance of various gears made of ferrous alloys. The cost of machining typical gears during the manufacturing process often exceeds 55 percent of total cost, especially when there is significant grinding after carburizing the gears. Therefore, improvements in the manufacturing of gears that can lead to a reduction in machining are valuable.

Nitriding produces high hardness and compressive stresses in many low-alloy steels used for gears. It is a nearly distortion-free process, which allows for the treating of finished components, thus minimizing costs. The complex nature of the stresses at the contact area of rotating gears leads to contact fatigue and sliding friction. Nitriding is superior to other surface engineering techniques in resisting wear at gear f lanks. When a high-strength alloy steel suitable for nitriding is used, a nitrided surface layer withstands high contact Herztian stress (contact stress) at gear flanks better than a deeper carburized layer in many instances.

Solar Manufacturing Business Agreement with Graphite Machining, Inc.

Graphite Machining, Inc. (GMI) of Topton, PA and Solar Manufacturing of Souderton, PA have been cooperating for the past year on the development and testing of a new graphite board material and its application for vacuum furnace hot zones. This new graphite board material has undergone extensive thermal and vacuum testing to prove its improved thermal efficiency and excellent vacuum performance compared to prior or present graphite board designs.

GMI intends to market this new graphite board under the name of HEATGUARD insulation while Solar Manufacturing will incorporate this new material into its vacuum furnace hot zones under the trade name of HEFVAC™ (High Efficiency Vacuum).

Frank C. Schoch president of GMI states “After extensive testing against our existing and competitive insulating materials, Solar Manufacturing and Graphite Machining combined our respective experience and created this new thermally efficient graphite board insulation material.”

Incorporating this new HEFVAC™ board insulation, Solar Manufacturing has now developed a proven more thermally efficient vacuum furnace hot zone design that is capable of achieving faster and better vacuum levels because of the HEFVAC™ sealed and low moisture absorption structure.

Nucor to Acquire Plate Mill in Texas

Nucor Corporation (NYSE: NUE) announced today that it has agreed to acquire Joy Global’s steel plate mill in Longview, Texas, for approximately $29 million. The mill produces carbon and alloy plate products with heat-treating capabilities and has an annual capacity of 180,000 tons.

“This acquisition builds on our strategy to capture a growing share of higher value-added plate products and complements the capabilities of our two existing plate mills,” said John Ferriola, Chairman, CEO and President of Nucor. “The Longview mill will serve as a valuable addition to Nucor’s plate product offerings, which we believe can be further leveraged by our Nucor commercial team.”

The mill produces specialty plate products with the capability of producing plate that can range from 1 to 12 inches thick and up to 138 inches wide.  Approximately 140 non-unionized teammates work at the Longview mill.

Nucor’s existing plate mills are in North Carolina and Alabama and have a combined capacity of 2.9 million tons per year.   Nucor’s existing mills produce plate for manufacturers of barges, bridges, heavy equipment, rail cars, refinery tanks, ships, wind towers, armor and other markets. Nucor plate products are also used in the pipe and tube, pressure vessel, transportation and construction industries.

Nucor and its affiliates are manufacturers of steel products, with operating facilities primarily in the U.S. and Canada.  Products produced include: carbon and alloy steel — in bars, beams, sheet and plate; steel piling; steel joists and joist girders; steel deck; fabricated concrete reinforcing steel; cold finished steel; steel fasteners; metal building systems; steel grating; and wire and wire mesh.  Nucor, through The David J. Joseph Company, also brokers ferrous and nonferrous metals, pig iron and HBI/DRI; supplies ferro-alloys; and processes ferrous and nonferrous scrap. Nucor is North America’s largest recycler.

StrikoWestofen Opens Heat-Treatment Business Unit

As of immediately, StrikoWestofen covers another step in the production chain of the light metal casting industry. From now on, heat treatment units for cast aluminium parts are another core competence of StrikoWestofen.

This is made possible by the recent takeover of the employees of BPR-Engineering GmbH from Rheda-Wiedenbrück. The 20 years of expertise of Frank Herkenräder, the founder of the company, and his team form the basis of the new StrikoWestofen business unit Heat Treatment.

The goal of this extension of our product portfolio is to meet the customers’ needs even better. The new Heat Treatment business unit pursues a holistic approach: heat treatment furnaces, quenching units and product carriers are not seen as individual components of a system but as part of a whole. This allows enormous cost savings due to the better coordination of processes, in some cases bringing distorsions down to 0% and reducing energy consumption by up to 30%.
