  1. Blue M, a global industrial and laboratory ovens manufacturer, has announced the shipment of a stacked mechanical convection oven to be used for non-hazardous curing applications between 570°F and 750°F (300°C and 400°C).
  2. Hammerer Aluminum Industries (HAI) has implemented a Nitrex nitriding system at its facility in Romania, replacing the traditional salt bath nitriding process. The new system has a load capacity of 3,300 lbs (1,500 kg), is designed specifically for treating extrusion dies, and offers controlled nitriding and controlled ferritic nitrocarburizing.
  3. SECO/WARWICK recently completed three transactions: a European manufacturer of modern armament equipment and armaments supplier for NATO acquired a vacuum furnace with gas cooling and a molybdenum heat chamber; a Slovenian manufacturer ordered a vacuum furnace with 15 bar high pressure gas hardening and two nitriding furnaces; and a Turkish company purchased an induction vacuum furnace for melting and obtaining castings designed for manufacturing aviation components.

Automaker To Modernize Heat Treatment Capabilities

A leading automotive manufacturer is updating its heat treating operations with Endothermic gas generators to enhance the carburizing process. The company, which produces engine parts that require high durability and wear resistance, is modernizing the facility’s aging, gas-heated generators with a more efficient, cost effective and sustainable solution.

To support the company’s modernization initiatives, UPC-Marathon, a Nitrex company, is supplying five advanced, electrically heated EndoFlex L Endothermic gas generators designed specifically for carburizing, a heat treat process that hardens surfaces by introducing carbon into the material. The facility’s production had been caught in a bottleneck due to the age of the gas-heated generators, which were consuming excessive natural gas and contributing to CO₂ emissions.

“The partnership extends beyond this project,” said Daniel Panny, head of Sales Europe at UPC-Marathon. “Building on the success of past collaborations, where we upgraded legacy generators with the EndoInjector gas injection system to enhance and stabilize endothermic gas delivery, the customer selected the EndoFlex L for this major overhaul..”

Set for commissioning early next year, the Endothermic gas generators will play a key role in the manufacturer’s modernization strategy, supporting its long-term economic and environmental objectives.

The small batch oven was manufactured by Wisconsin Oven, designed to utilize combination airflow to maximum heating rates of 650°F and temperature uniformity.
  • With the successful conversion to a four-stand finishing mill, Henan Yirui New Materials Technology Co, Ltd, officially began production. SMS Group converted an existing hot rolling mill into a tandem finishing mill by adding three new finishing mill stands, developed for refurbishing and integrating components.
  • KALLER, a manufacturer of gas springs and gas hydraulic systems based in Sweden, recently launched its fully automated line of hardening furnaces for surface coatings on gas springs. The hardening systems were supplied by Ipsen International.

  • Steve Fuller has joined the team at Nitrex HTS as the new plant general manager at their Michigan location. He brings 45 years of experience in commercial heat treating, machine tool manufacturing, fabrication, quality management, and more.
  • Bobby Boom, Tim Litchauer, and Wade Sholmire, have been added to the Superheat team as business development managers. Wade is the new National BDM, Tim will oversee the Greater Houston Area, and Bobby will manage the Southeast Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas regions.
  • Chris Martin has been promoted to regional sales manager for the Southeast by Ipsen. Chris will be responsible for leading a team of seven that includes six field service engineers and one service administrator.

  • Gary Doyon has stepped down from his role as CEO of Inductotherm Group, after 15 years in the position and 38 years with the company. Mick Nallen and Satyen Prabhu have taken as co‐leaders at the company, which provides thermal processing technologies. Mr. Doyon will remain actively involved with the company, assisting with specific operational needs of other businesses owned by the Rowan family and pursuing new business avenues and opportunities for the Inductotherm Group.
  • Ipsen USA has launched its Field Service Engineer Academy, designed to be a 20-week in-depth program with classroom training and experience in the field with veteran service technicians. Darci Johnson, program and transformation manager at the company, is leading the implementation of the FSE Academy. Content will focus on the fundamentals of vacuum furnace repair.
  • Industrial furnace equipment manufacturer Gasbarre welcomed Dan Hill as product development manager; he will be based at the company’s Livonia, Michigan, facility. A licensed professional engineer, Dan brings a diverse background in capital equipment, spanning material handling, control systems, boilers and furnaces, combustion systems, and industrial washing/deburring equipment.
  • The U.S. Navy recently selected StandardAero to serve as its engine depot-level repair prime contractor to perform Rolls-Royce T56-A-427A engine MRO services, supporting the Navy’s fleet of E-2D Advanced Hawkeye aircraft. The aerospace aftermarket service supplier has also announced that Turkish and European Boeing 737 Operator Corendon Airlines has extended its contract for the support of CFM LEAP-18 engines.
  • Ipsen USA recently announced the formal launch of its Service HUB model, marking a significant shift in how the company delivers customer service and support across the United States. The program has been under the direction of Geoffrey Somary, the company’s global CEO. An Italian heat treater enhanced its operations with the installation of control cabinets, allowing for real-time data analysis and more efficient management of its carburizing processes. The improvement helped minimize downtime and optimize furnace performance.

Despite the robustness of their three batch IQ furnaces, T.T.M. Trattamenti Termici dei Metalli Srl identified an opportunity to redefine their approach to furnace controls and automation and partnered with UPC-Marathon, a Nitrex company, to breathe new life into their aging systems. The project entailed the installation of control cabinets equipped with advanced process controllers, the integration of the controllers into a SCADA system for advanced monitoring and control capabilities. To complement T.T.M.’s technological upgrades, UPC-Marathon also installed a new gas cabinet.

“This strategic investment in modernizing the furnace controls with UPC-Marathon proved not only highly effective in resolving immediate challenges with aging controls but also more cost-effective than replacing the three furnaces,” said Daniel Panny, product manager and head of UPC-Marathon Europe.

Manufacturer Adds Endo Generators for Wind Turbine Gearboxes

NGC Gears, a manufacturer of wind power gearboxes, has completed the installation of two additional Endothermic generators from a manufacturer with North American locations. 

UPC-Marathon, a Nitrex company, installed the Endo generators at NGC Gears‘ its new facility in Jinhu, China. This acquisition brings the total of generator sets to five since 2022, collectively generating an impressive 800 m³/h (22,252 ft3/h) capacity of Endothermic gas supplied to carburizing and hardening furnaces used for processing various gear components. The latest installations in February and March of 2024 support the heat treating operations of the company’s wind energy gearbox production.

NGC’s decision to expand capacity is in response to the growing demand for wind power solutions in China and globally. The new Endothermic gas generating systems will significantly enhance the company’s production capabilities, enabling NGC to meet increasing market needs with greater efficiency and reliability.

EndoFlex offers precise control of production media to the carburizing and hardening environments, leading to higher quality gear production with improved longevity and performance. The result is improved carburizing and hardening processes, higher-quality hardened gears, reduced operating costs, and increased efficiency, as well as immediate cost savings through reduced electricity and gas consumption and minimized waste.

Automotive Manufacturer Orders Second Endo Generator

An automotive manufacturer in South America has recently placed a follow-up order for a second Endothermic generator from a manufacturer of industrial process control, automation, and digitalization solutions with North American locations.

UPC-Marathon, a Nitrex company, installed a 200 m³/h EndoFlex unit last year. The new generator, with a similar capacity, aims to enhance stability, to ensure consistent composition and gas flows, and to prioritize quality of automotive gear boxes while achieving efficiencies in heat treatment operations.

Prior to adopting the EndoFlex solution, the manufacturer relied on four generator units, each with a capacity of 70 m³/h and consuming 80 kW of power. With the same 80 kW of power consumption, the EndoFlex generator delivers a 200 m³/h capacity.

This transition to the new unit represents a 75% reduction in power consumption and a contribution to operational efficiency and sustainability efforts. The new generator streamlines maintenance procedures, adheres to stringent quality standards, and reduces CO2 emissions. Control over gas quality and production for the neutral hardening furnace enhances product quality, reduces operating costs, and optimizes energy consumption. By automatically adjusting gas production to match real-time furnace demand, the generator eliminates overproduction and waste.

A gas generator was recently installed for Jomarca, one of the biggest manufacturers of fasteners, bolts, nuts, and fixing elements in Brazil. The generator will supply exothermic gas to a continuous wire annealing furnace, which is part of the manufacturer’s efforts to meet market demand efficiently and sustainably for baling wire in the construction industry.

Using exothermic gas instead of nitrogen, the company expects to reduce operating costs, increase production efficiency, and improve the wear properties and finish of its wire products.

To carburize its traction chains, Nordic Traction Group, with manufacturing locations in Finland and Scotland, added the EndoFlex™ S system. The system, from UPC-Marathon, a Nitrex company with North American locations, replaces an outdated generator. The new system improves process reliability and product quality and requires less preventative maintenance.

OWZ Ostalb received a new electrically heated endothermic gas generator. The company wanted to replace the old generator since it had no automatic process control and was unable to control the dew point efficiency in situations where the ambient air changed too much. The old components, which were difficult to replace, further reduced the generator’s overall efficiency.

OWZ Ostalb, a commercial heat treatment company in Aalen, Germany, received the EndoFlex™ S from UPC-Marathon, a Nitrex business unit, in late 2021.

"The customer chose us," says Daniel Panny, product manager at UPC-Marathon in Germany, "because we offered [a] gas mixing and control system, the EndoInjector™, and the [. . .] ReactionCore™ multi-retort system to deliver a reliable, on-demand supply of quality endogas, resulting in significant CO2 savings for their heat-treating operations."

The EndoFlex™ S that was purchased is the electrically heated version with an air cooler, an automatic nitrogen purge system, and additional CH4 monitoring to meet the highest safety standards.
