Sanbao Group Boosts Heat Treatment Capabilities with 3 Annealing and Coating Lines

Steelmaker Sanbao Group has expanded its heat treatment operations with three annealing and coating lines for non-grain oriented (NGO) silicon steel. The equipment enhancement is part of the company’s entry into the field of silicon steel production.

Sanbao contracted with Tenova LOI Thermprocess, an industrial furnace supplier, for the heat treatment furnaces intended for processing metals. Two electric arc furnaces (EAF) previously supplied by Tenova Group have been installed and put into operation.

A signing ceremony was held at the headquarters of Sanbao Iron & Steel Co., Ltd., in Zhangzhou, China, as part of the company’s “Cold rolled Silicon Steel and Metal Products Deep Processing Project”, a new greenfield project for electrical steel that aims to obtain the highest surface quality and best magnetic properties in NGO electrical steel for Southeast China.

An Ultra Low NOx HPH®-flameless bell-type annealing plant at thyssenkrupp Hohenlimburg has achieved CO2-neutral heat treatment of precision strip.

Tenova LOI Thermprocess, a company which is part of Tenova, continues to prove that CO2-neutral heat treatment can go together with low nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions in a cooperation project with thyssenkrupp Hohenlimburg GmbH. Tenova LOI Thermprocess is part of Tenova and is one of the leading companies supplying industrial furnace systems for the heat treatment of metals. Tenova, a Techint Group company, is as a worldwide partner for sustainable, innovative, and reliable solutions in the metals and the mining industries.

In bell-type annealing plants, which have so far been mainly operated with natural gas, precipitation and spheroidizing annealing of steel coils is carried out to specifically adjust the mechanical properties for subsequent rolling processes or the required product properties at the end customer.

At thyssenkrupp’s Hagen-Hohenlimburg site, Tenova LOI Thermprocess’s heating hoods with LOI’s patented Ultra low NOx HPH®-flameless concept has been used for around 12 years. By increasing air preheating temperatures to 1112°F (600°C), this technology has led to energy and therefore CO2 savings of up to 12%.

In a campaign involving several annealing cycles, a further step has been taken towards decarbonizing steel production as part of the joint project. In production trials, the fuel gas supply for the heat treatment of hot-rolled narrow strip was gradually converted from natural gas to up to 100% hydrogen. Tenova indicates that, for the first time in the world, 70 t of steel strip were heat treated in a bell-type annealing plant in a locally CO2‑neutral process. The flameless concept demonstrates its advantages here because despite the higher combustion temperature compared to natural gas and thus a tendency towards higher nitrogen oxide emissions, it results in remarkably low NOx emissions.

Using the bell-type annealing plant, up to 2600 kg of CO2 can be saved per annealing cycle by using regenerative produced hydrogen, while maintaining productivity and product properties.

“The combustion of hydrogen is technically more complex than the direct use of electricity or the combustion of natural gas. This project has provided us with further insights into the decarbonization of the bell-type annealing process and is helping us on our joint path towards the transformation to climate-neutral steel production,” says Dr. Gökhan Gula, project manager and process engineer at Tenova LOI Thermprocess.

Steel Wire Plant Needs New Bell Annealer System

“After detailed technological analysis, Italy’s Trafilerie San Paolo, srl. has selected a Hicon/N2 bell annealer facility for steel wire by Ebner Industrieofenbau.

“The facility will be installed in TSP’s newly-remodeled steel wire plant in Molteno (LC). Initial installation will comprise two Hicon/N2 workbases, one heating bell and one cooling bell, as well as all required peripheral equipment. The scope of supply includes all required supplementary equipment such as hydraulic power supply equipment, a pressure control station, analysing systems, state-of-the-art electrical systems with automation technology and a central visualisation system terminal.”

Wuhan Iron & Steel Co. Ltd. (WISCO) has awarded Tenova LOI Thermprocess another order for the installation of a continuous quench for efficient cooling of thin steel plates.

thyssenkrupp Steel Europe to Receive Radiant Tube Burner Technology

HTD Size-PR Logothyssenkupp Steel Europe will receive more than 250 new recuperative burners. These are designated for single ended radiant tubes (I-tubes) and W-Type radiant tubes. Final installation will be at FBA 7 of thyssenkrupp Steel Europe, Bochum (Germany), and delivery of the new combustion system will take place at the end of 2021. Commissioning is scheduled for the first quarter of 2022.

Tenova LOI Thermprocess placed the order and is part of a wider modernization project of a continuous galvanizing line at thyssenkrupp Steel Europe. The new combustion system, provided by German based burner manufacturer IBS Industrial Burner Systems, meets the highest requirements by targeting NOx-emissions lower than 140 mg/Nm³ @3%O2 – reference at target strip temperatures above 1652°F (900°C).

thyssenkrupp Steel Europe to Revamp Burner Technology

HTD Size-PR LogoEuropean manufacturer thyssenkrupp Steel Europe AG (tkSE) is revamping burner technology at their continuous galvanizing line located in Bochum, Germany. This modernization measure is an important cornerstone in enabling thyssenkrupp Steel to produce high-strength steels (AHSS) in Bochum in the highest quality and with increased production capacity for further use in the automotive industry.

In order to meet market requirements and reduce both emissions and energy consumption, Tenova LOI Thermprocess will ensure that the furnace will be equipped with new burners that meet even highest requirements by targeting the lowest possible NOx-emission levels (lower than 140 mg/Nm³ (@3%O2 reference)) during production. In addition, the heating system will be upgraded in order to increase the target strip temperatures to > 900°C.

This is the third consecutive modernization order that this sister company to North American engineering company, Tenova Inc., received for the continuous galvanizing line in Bochum.

With an annual production capacity of 540,000 t of high quality galvanized steel it is one of the core production lines of thyssenkrupp Steel Europe for the production of car body parts and AHSS-steels.

The line was commissioned in 1992, and since 2014  major parts have been upgraded with the latest technologies. In the first phase, the pre-heating and over-aging sections were modified to improve the annealing cycle in over-aging regarding larger heating capacity and improved temperature homogeneity. The energy recovery in the pre-heating section has nearly doubled and therefore the carbon footprint of the line was significantly reduced.

In 2017, a major step towards production of AHSS was realized through a substantial revamp of the fast cooling section. A new set of nozzle boxes, fans and heat exchangers were added to the existing equipment. The system is designed for highest heat transfer coefficients and lowest strip vibrations, even with enlarged strip length without roller support.

thyssenkrupp Steel Europe AG Orders Walking Beam Furnace

thyssenkrupp Steel Europe AG, a global manufacturer in high-grade flat steel, has ordered a walking beam furnace. The furnace is designed for heating slabs and will be located at their plant in Duisburg, Germany. This furnace replaces an old reheating furnace. The scope of the contract includes engineering and the largely turnkey delivery of all equipment as well as the erection and commissioning including training.

The new furnace is designed to produce premium sheets, which will service the automotive industry. With a capacity of 380 t/h, it will be integrated in the existing hot rolling mill infrastructure. Additionally, it will be used for heating slabs made of alloyed or unalloyed steel and charged in one and/or two rows. Finally, the furnace features a combustion air pre-heating system to significantly reduce the energy consumption of the overall production. In the long term, it will assist the thyssenkrupp group with achieving their climate related emissions targets.

“The new plant [read: furnace] is scheduled to start operating in mid-2022,” commented Dr. Arnd Köfler, Chief Technology Officer at thyssenkrupp Steel.

Further, “The new plant [read: furnace] will ensure the high surface quality requirements of the automotive industry,” said Antonio Catalano, Executive Vice President of the Tenova Downstream BU, “and support our customer’s forward strategy.”

Tenova, with the companies Tenova LOI Thermprocess and Tenova Italimpianti involved in the project, will design and supply the entire walking beam furnace plant including the charging roller table and the charging machine as well as the related electrical, measuring and control systems. In addition, a sophisticated automation system developed by Tenova LOI Thermprocess will enhance the control and energy efficiency of the furnace.

The production start of the walking beam furnace is scheduled for July 2022.

Heat Treat Expansion for HPH Bell-Type Furnace Plant

A Magnitogorsk, Chelyabinsk (Russia) company has placed a new contract for the expansion of their existing HPH® Bell-Type Furnace Plant for Wire Coils with a company based in Essen, Germany. OJSC MMK-METIZ located in Magnitogorsk, Chelyabinsk region, already operates a HPH® Bell-Type Furnace Plant supplied by Tenova LOI Thermprocess in 2014. This plant consists of 2 annealing bases, 1 heating hood and 1 Jet-cooling hood with a maximum net charge weight of 36 tons of wire rod or drawn wire coils. It uses a hydrogen/nitrogen mixture as protective gas atmosphere and features a useable diameter of 3,200 mm and a useable height of 2,700 mm.

In the spring of 2019, a new contract was signed concerning the expansion of the existing plant by further 2 annealing bases, 1 additional heating hood and 1 Jet-cooling hood. The start of production of the new plant is scheduled for the beginning of 2020. Besides the spheroidization annealing of wire rod, this plant also carries out the recrystallization annealing of drawn wire coils with the HPH® (High Performance Hydrogen) annealing technology.
