38 Heat Treating Furnaces for Aerospace

A U.S. Air Force contract has been awarded for 38 advanced aerospace heat treating furnaces. The furnaces will enhance mission-critical aircraft maintenance capabilities at bases across the United States and overseas.

Phillips Corporation Federal Division and DELTA H® Technologies will provide the furnaces. Of the 38 are 13 Model DCAHT®-181248-1200/500-MIL units and 25 Defender Series Model DEF-DC-RH-242436/1200-CH-242436/1200 units. Deliveries are scheduled over the next year to provide the USAF with heat treating capacity for aviation-grade metals to meet AMS2750H compliance and NAVAIR TO 1-1A-9 standards.

Richard Conway, director and CTO of DELTA H Technologies and a U.S. Air Force veteran, added: “Ten years ago, the Air Force asked us to help solve a problem. As an engineer and veteran, it became a personal mission to provide the best heat treating solutions possible. Today, knowing the USAF relies on DELTA H and Phillips Federal for this critical technology is deeply humbling.”

The DCAHT® Model has dual convection-heated chambers with certified TUS work volume at 18” W × 12” H × 48” L. The lower chamber operates to 1200°F for aluminum solution heat treating with a roll-away quench tank, and an upper chamber which operates up to 500°F for aluminum aging.

The Defender Series Model has dual TUS-certified work volumes at 24” W × 24” H × 36” L. The convection chamber operates between 200°F–1200°F with rapid cooling from 1000°F to <200°F in under 30 minutes, enabling complete solution heat treating, annealing, and aging (T6). The radiant chamber operates between 1000°F–2000°F, with inert gas atmosphere capability.

Heat Treating System Delivered to Tinker Airforce Base in Oklahoma

HTD Size-PR LogoA heat treat system for use in the aerospace and defense industry was recently delivered to Tinker AFB, OK - USAF.  The system is certified to AMS2750G and will be used to heat treat aluminum as well as other metals for use on military aircraft.

DELTA H® and Phillips Federal delivered the furnace to Tinker AFB, which will be used for for heat treating aviation grade aluminum for military purposes. Third party services for calibration and qualification were performed by Andrew Bassett, president of Aerospace Testing and Pyrometry. The certifications for instrumentation, temperature uniformity surveys, and system accuracy testing were completed through ATP’s new Aerospace Compliance Software (ASC) to AMS2750G.

The Dual Chamber Aerospace Heat Treat (DCAHT ®) system has a certified TUS volume of 24” wide, 16" high, 72" long. In addition to aluminum, the system can be used for PH stainless steel aging, as well as titanium and ferrous alloy processes.  Training was provided to several operators, QC personnel, and two “Trainers” qualified to train other operators.

United States Air Force in UK Receives Aerospace Furnace and Heat Treat Training

HTD Size-PR LogoUnited States Air Force personnel stationed at Royal Air Force (RAF) Base Mildenhall in the United Kingdom recently commissioned and received full training on the use and maintenance of a heat treating furnace for aerospace parts. The furnace will help maintain KC-135, CV-22, C-130 aircraft, and F-15 fighter jets assigned to RAF Mildenhall or nearby RAF Lakenheath air stations. The installation was interrupted by an impromptu visit from the U.S. President.

The DELTA H® TECHNOLOGIES dual chamber heat treating furnace for aerospace (DCAHT®) was designed by the supplier to rapidly heat treat all common aviation grade metals and alloys necessary for aircraft maintenance and is fully compliant with USAF/NAVAIR Tech Order 1-1A-9 and SAE-AMS2750F. The training received by the USAF airmen at RAF Mildenhall included essential instructions in heat treating, as well as furnace calibration practices like temperature uniformity surveys (TUS) and system accuracy tests (SAT) and culminated with each airman receiving Certificates of Training.

The specialized furnace features an upper chamber convection system, 18" wide x 12" high x 48" deep, capable of Class 1 (+/-5°F) from 200°F to 1200°F and a lower chamber radiant heat system, 12" wide x 12" high x 36" deep, capable of Class 3 (+/-15°F) from 1000°F to 2000°F with air or argon atmosphere. A roll-away quench tank features dual baths for water and oil quenchant. The controls and data acquisition provide detailed batch records of heat treated parts, including quench delay, as well as automatic tracking of thermocouple usage and calibration intervals.

The training was interrupted by an unexpected visitor to RAF Mildenhall. The hangar next to the Metals Tech Shop, where the furnace was being commissioned and the training was being conducted, was the epicenter for the arrival of a top-secret VIP. When the Air Force Band began practicing "Hail to the Chief," it became obvious that U.S. President Joe Biden would be making an unexpected visit to the base. While the President’s visit was not related to the furnace commissioning, Richard Conway, DELTA H® founder and chief technology officer, and wife Mary Conway, witnessed this presidential visit and got a few candid photographs of Air Force One (see above).

Heat Treat Today is privileged to oversee the 40 Under 40 recognition awards, highlighting a group of young, up-and-coming talent in the North American heat treat industry every year. AM Supplier Adds Dual Chamber Aerospace Heat Treating (DCAHT™) System

An independent metal additive manufacturer for the aerospace and defense industry recently added a dual-chamber aerospace heat treating system to its vertically integrated, end-to-end production process.

Sintavia, based in Hollywood, Florida, purchased the DCAHT system from DELTA H TECHNOLOGIES. In addition to aerospace and defense, the company provides advanced manufacturing for critical industries such as oil and natural gas and industrial gas turbomachinery.

“The DCAHT is a great addition to our machine fleet in our new facility,” said Doug Hedges, president of Sintavia. “We are impressed with its performance and complex capabilities such as quenching to our customer specifications. We look forward to meeting the furnacing needs of our customers with this advanced system.”

Medical Devices Manufacturer Expands In-House Heat Treating Capabilities

A medical device manufacturer has upgraded its in-house heat treating capabilities with a dual-chamber furnace system, which will give the company the same pyrometry requirement in its medical device production as materials and parts produced for the aerospace and defense industry in terms of furnace/oven calibration, classification and performance requirements.

Straits Orthopaedics in Penang, Malaysia, commissioned DELTA H TECHNOLOGIES for a second dual-chamber aerospace heat treat (DCAHTTM) furnace system. The furnace system, controls, and software are designed for full compliance to the medical accreditation program “MedAccred” as well as the US FDA’s recent recognition and adoption of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Aerospace Materials Specification 2750 (AMS2750) pyrometry standard.

Heat Treat Equipment Manufacturer Expands to Broaden Aerospace Supply

A heat treating equipment manufacturer based in Carroll, Ohio, recently announced plans to expand its facility and broaden its capability to produce furnaces for aerospace manufacturers equipping in-house heat treat operations.

Delta H Technologies LLC’s investments will cover the purchase of machinery and equipment for the design and production of furnaces for aerospace components. The expansion confirms the company’s nearly 30-year commitment to providing state-of-the-art heat treat equipment manufacturing to keep pace with the growth in aerospace technology and production.

“Richard Conway, director and chief technology officer, started the company in 1990 while attending Ohio State University to get his bachelors of science in industrial engineering. He did maintenance and tuning work for industrial furnaces and ovens.  . . . Richard’s wife, Mary Conway, is a retired teacher who taught honors chemistry and physics at Pickerington North High School.   • A Berwick, Pennsylvania, machining company which offers heat treating among its services was recently acquired by precision machining provider DPMS, based in Santa Clara, California. K-Fab Inc. operates a 22,000-sq.-ft. precision machine shop that manufactures parts for the aerospace, defense, and semiconductor sectors.
  • GKN Powder Metallurgy recently announced a strategic collaboration with HP Inc, becoming the first to deploy the just-launched HP Metal Jet, a groundbreaking binder jetting technology, into its factories to produce functional metal parts for auto and industrial leaders, including Volkswagen and Wilo, and for companies around the world.
  • Joshua Farrell recently took over the Operations Manager position at Mid-South Metallurgical, based in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

Equipment Chatter

  • California-based Delta H Technologies, LLC, recently delivered a commissioned dual chamber aerospace heat treating system — the largest and most advanced to date — to a leading U.S. military aircraft manufacturer. Both chambers are certified for heating parts up to 1200°F and capable of solution heat treating, aging, annealing aluminum, stress relieving titanium and ferrous castings, weldments, and aging of PH stainless steel.
  • An auto parts manufacturer recently received shipment of a customized oxidation nitriding furnace, manufactured by JGEF Furnace, a vacuum heat treating  equipment supplier with U.S. offices in San Francisco, California. The pit furnace, which has useful dimensions of 43.3 inches (1,100 mm) in diameter x 70.9 inches (1,800 mm) high, has a maximum temperature rating of 1292°F (700°C). The goal for this project was to represent an advanced solution for metallic parts. The furnace includes an advanced oxidation system that ensures the workpieces are preheated in a controlled oxidizing atmosphere and guarantees corrosion resistance, which in turn facilitates nitrogen uptake and growth of the nitride compound layer.
  • A large capacity fastener hardening furnace system has been commissioned by a tier one automotive supplier based in Detroit, Michigan. CAN-ENG Furnaces International Ltd has been contracted to design and commission the system for the company, which offers heat treating among its services.
  • A large capacity SECO/Warwick vacuum furnace was delivered to U.K.-based Wallwork Heat Treatment company just before Christmas.

Kudos Chatter

  • America Makes recently announced the awardees of a Directed Project Opportunity on advancing additive manufacturing (AM) post-processing techniques (AAPT), funded by the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), Materials and Manufacturing Directorate, Manufacturing and Industrial Base Technology Division. Awardee #1 is Arizona State University, in conjunction with Quintus Technologies; Phoenix Heat Treating, Inc.; and Phoenix Analysis & Design Technologies, Inc. Awardee #2 is ASTM International Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence (AM CoE), a collaborative, which includes ASTM International, Auburn University, EWI, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Wichita State University – National Institute for Aviation Research (NIAR), in conjunction with Quintus Technologies, Carpenter Technologies Corporation, Aerojet Rocketdyne, Rolls Royce Corporation, Honeywell Aerospace, GE Aviation, and Raytheon.
  • Paulo recently announced the recent addition of the St. Louis Division to the approved heat treat sources list for General Motors High-Pressure Die Casting Die Insert Material. The approval list references AWQ49658 which includes the heat treatment specifications for Hot Work Tool Steels for GM High-Pressure Die Casting applications.  The St. Louis Division joins Paulo’s Nashville plant on the approval list, which includes only seven approved locations in the US. AWQ49657 covers approved material providers, heat treaters, and testing labs. Paulo is the only US source with two facilities on the list.
  • Nominations are open for the ASM HTS/Surface Combustion Emerging Leader Award, which recognizes an outstanding early-to-midcareer heat treating professional whose accomplishments exhibit exceptional achievements in the heat treating industry. The award was created in recognition of Surface Combustion’s 100-year anniversary in 2015. The winning young professional will best exemplify the ethics, education, ingenuity, and future leadership of our industry.
