Heat Treater of Military and Aerospace Ceramic Parts Expands with Box Furnace

HTD Size-PR LogoA U.S. manufacturer with a plant in the Midwest received and commissioned a large high-temperature box furnace for processing ceramic matrix parts that will be used in military and aerospace applications.

L&L Special Furnace Company, Inc.'s GHH3350 has an effective work zone of 32” wide x 30” high x 50” deep. The furnace is capable of reaching temperatures up to  3100°F/1700°C under partial atmospheric pressure. A vacuum pump helps to remove oxygen prior to beginning the thermal cycle. The case is sealed for use with inert atmosphere.

Vacuum Furnace Delivered to Defense Industry Heat Treater

A Southeast USA heat treater in the defense industry recently acquired a vacuum furnace. It will be used to age harden precipitation hardened stainless steels and beryllium copper.

The Mentor® vacuum furnace is a model HFL-2018-2IQ, built by Solar Manufacturing. It features a graphite-insulated hot zone, a load weight capacity of up to 250 lbs., and a maximum operating temperature of 2400°F.

"We provided a complete turnkey solution," states Dan Insogna, Southeast Regional Sales Manager for Solar Manufacturing. Along with the furnace, the heat treater received "a water system, and the recipes for the heat treat cycles their materials require."

Commercial Heat Treater Expands

A new plant investment aimed at expanding the Aurora, Illinois commercial heat treat facility located just west of Chicago was announced. The production expansion will add a fourth building on the property to house a new low-pressure carburizing (LPC) system and secondary heat-treating equipment.

President of Nitrex Heat Treating Services, Jason Orosz made this announcement earlier in the month. The new ECM vacuum carburizing furnace with oil quench capabilities will help meet growing demand from makers of high-end critical parts within the automotive, aerospace, and tooling industries. The 20-bar dual-chamber furnace has a workload size of 40” L x 24” W x 28” H (1000 x 600 x 715 mm) and a load capacity of 1500 lbs. (680 kg).

Nitrex broke ground for the new building on July 20th, and will connect to an existing structure, Building 3. According to Bill Walter, facility manager of Nitrex Aurora, the construction project will be completed in January 2021, and production on the LPC furnace is expected to begin in April 2021.

The expansion will increase the production footprint by 11,000 square feet to support current demand as well as future growth. Once this building is completed, the total floor space will be over 50,000 square feet.

Kamyanka Machine Building Purchases 3-in-1 Furnace

The parent company of a North American furnace manufacturer provided a furnace to Kamyanka Machine Building, an international leader in the production of pumps for manufacturing thread and chemical fibers, metallurgy and oil. The furnace will be equipped with a closed water system and gas installation so that the device can work independently.

Additional equipment from SECO/WARWICK in Meadville, Pennsylvania, will also include a vacuum carburizing option as well as quenching, heating in gas, and isothermal cooling. This will enable Kamyanka Machine Building Plant LLC, based in the Ukraine, to carry out full heat treatment processes in one device in accordance with their requirements. They will be able to perform three heat treatment processes in a single furnace instead of in separate operations.

Twin Vacuum Furnaces for Energy-Optimized Heat Treating

The first set of twin furnaces working on a single pumping station have recently been developed and commissioned to a leading designer and manufacturer of vacuum furnaces for the heat treatment of metal parts.

BMI, a Tenova company, headquartered in Lyon, France, commissioned the B54R-TWIN – vacuum furnaces for tempering – to meet the customer’s specific request for equipment that optimizes energy consumption.

During a heat treatment cycle of the B54R-TWIN, the pumping phase lasts only 30 minutes. Therefore, it is more efficient to use only one pumping group for two furnaces, working alternatively on one furnace or the other. This not only reduces electricity consumption but also minimizes the maintenance costs of the pumps.

Earlier in this quarter, Tenova announced key contracts from Chinese steel producers for six electrical arc furnaces (EAF) Consteel® Evolution in response to Chinese steelmaking industries converting their steel shops plants with EAF technology. In order to improve the reduction rate of CO2 emissions promoted by Chinese government, Chinese steelmakers are starting to increase the share of electrical steel production in comparison to manufacturing using blast or basic oxygen furnaces.

Component Repair Technologies Featured in Crain’s Cleveland Business Article: Heat Treat Furnace Highlighted

A recently article in Crain’s Cleveland Business news (click here for full article) featured Component Repair Technologies (CRT), an aerospace heat treating company that performs a wide variety of in-house aircraft engine repair processes including machining, flame spray applications, welding, heat treat, chrome and nickel plating, shot peening, nondestructive testing, visual and dimensional inspection, and acid and alkaline cleaning . The company works on a wide variety of parts from several different engine models.

The Crain’s article featured a photo of a large vertical vacuum furnace manufactured by Solar Manufacturing, Inc. The furnace was designed and built specifically to CRT requirements.

The furnace is critical for CRT’s daily operations and has logged more than four thousand cycles since being commissioned over five years ago. The unit is in use virtually 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  The furnace pictured has a working hot zone 84″ in diameter by 60″ high and will operate to 2400ºF in high vacuum conditions.  The furnace has a hearth capacity of 5,000 lbs. and includes a 300 HP motor fan and heat exchanger for rapid argon gas quenching at up to two atmospheres overpressure.  Under heating and in the vacuum mode, the furnace operates to the mid-10-5 Torr vacuum range — approximately the same vacuum level found on the surface of the moon.

Medical Manufacturer Chooses Vacuum Furnace System

A vacuum heat-treating system with 2-bar gas quenching was shipped to Costa Rica and will be used to manufacture surgical components. The TITAN® H2, manufactured by Ipsen, helps companies accelerate the pace of innovation while satisfying the strict legal requirements of the medical industry.

The standardized vacuum furnace features an 18″ x 24″ x 18″ (455 mm x 610 mm x 455 mm) all-metal hot zone with a 1,000-pound (450 kg) load capacity. It is capable of operating at temperatures of 1,000 °F to 2,400 °F (538 °C to 1,316 °C) with ±10 °F (±6 °C) temperature uniformity. Equipped with the PdMetrics® platform for predictive maintenance – which securely connects to a network of integrated sensors on the furnace to gather and analyze data, run algorithms and provide real-time diagnostics – the furnace provides sophisticated monitoring of critical systems and key parameters that improve the health and integrity of the equipment. The company also received a gas backfill reservoir, a loader with a 2,000-pound (907 kg) load capacity and a complete air-cooled, closed-loop water system.

Solar Atmospheres Group Adds Vacuum Pump Services Corp.

VPS LogoSouderton, Pennsylvania: Solar Atmosphere announced the formation of a new vacuum pump servicing company, Vacuum Pump Services Corp. Solar Atmospheres group of companies has over one hundred mechanical vacuum roughing pumps and mechanical holding pumps. Solar currently operates a fleet of vacuum furnaces across the United States many of which are still in operation after 30+ years.  Since mechanical pump life averages five to ten years, depending on usage, it became advantageous for the commercial vacuum heat treating company to establish its own vacuum pump service center.

Currently, there are three employees:  Bob Sandora, Vice President of Operations, a longtime Solar Atmospheres employee with over 40 years of mechanical vacuum pump experience; Steve MacInnes, Manager of Operations with 15 years of mechanical vacuum pump experience; and another recently hired pump technician.

According to William R. Jones, CEO of the Solar Atmospheres family of companies, “We know vacuum pumps, when to have the pumps serviced, and how to service them correctly.  This is the base reason for establishing our own organization.  We have also serviced pumps for other organizations including our competitors.  So we’re eager to share our knowledge and expertise and to offer our services broadly across the industry.”
