  1. The precision forging manufacturer Jiangsu Pacific Precision Forging Company has placed an order with SMS group for a fully automatic MP 3150 eccentric closed-die forging press. Pacific Precision will be able to forge aluminum chassis components on a much larger scale. This new expansion provides Pacific Precision with access to the growing automotive market segment for more lightweight designs.
  2. A commercial heat treater in Mexico purchased a third vacuum furnace from SECO/WARWICK Group.
  3. Ecocat India, a catalyst manufacturer, has ordered an advanced technology vacuum gas cooling furnace from SECO/WARWICK. The system will carry out brazing and annealing processes.
  4. Several new CAB lines have been ordered from SECO/WARWICK to be delivered to manufacturers in China. Two companies specifically chose EV/CAB lines while another manufacturer purchased a CAB line.
  5. SECO/WARWICK delivered two CAB lines and one universal chamber furnace for aluminum brazing to an automotive manufacturer in China. The systems will braze large-size coolers for vehicle batteries.
  6. Oetzbach Edelstahl GmbH, a hardening plant, has purchased a third furnace from SECO/WARWICK.
  7. A Swiss commercial heat treater ordered a brazing furnace to be used for nickel and silver from SECO/WARWICK.
  8. Tenova LOI Thermprocess has completed the production optimization of a new Twin-Chamber Melting Furnace (TCF®) at E-Max Billets in Kerkrade, the Netherlands.
  9. An Asian thread rolling die conglomerate selected a SECO/WARWICK vacuum furnace. The Vector® will be used for vacuum hardening and tempering fastener dies.

  1. Hubbard-Hall has expanded its product offering and customer resources by acquiring the assets of Torch Surface Technologies, a specialty chemical company based in Whitmore Lake, MI.
  2. New simulation software is being launched at CENOS Simulation Software. The application portfolio expands with some new electromagnetic case software apps. The first apps will be launched in Q4 or a little later.
  3. Solar Atmospheres of California announced it has been awarded the approval to process parts for Lockheed Martin (LMCO) owned Sikorsky. The Sikorsky approval adds to the existing LMCO process specifications held for vacuum heat treatment of titanium, nickel alloys, and stainless steel per AMS 2801, AMS 2774, AMS 2759/3, and others.
  4. Nel Hydrogen US, a subsidiary of Nel, has entered into a joint development agreement with General Motors to help accelerate the industrialization of Nel’s proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer platform. The two companies are looking to enable more cost competitive sources of renewable hydrogen.
  5. The Supervisory Board of thyssenkrupp AG extended the appointment of Oliver Burkhard by five years.   12. Aluplast – ZTG, an Altest company, recently expanded its production capacity with a second Nitrex nitriding system. The second furnace, a model N-EXT-612, is capable of processing a load of extrusion dies weighing up to 1300lbs.

Metal Exchange Corporation announced that Matt Rohm, current President and Chief Operating Officer (COO), will be promoted to Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Metal Exchange Corporation effective January 1, 2023. Atmosphere-Controlled Retort Burn-Off Furnace Delivered to Midwest Manufacturer

Ceramic matrix parts materialize when nanofibers of silicon carbide or other ceramic nano threads are wound together, forming various sheets and 3D-printed shapes. The nano threads in the process are coated with proprietary resins that must be completely removed from the substructure using heat. The resulting finished product is lighter and stronger than titanium.

L&L Special Furnace Company, Inc.'s Model XLC3672 has a work zone of 32” wide by 32” high by 66” deep. It has a single zone of control with a temperature gradient of ±20°F at 1,100°F using four zones of temperature control with biasing to balance any temperature gradients. The Model XLC3672 is controlled by a Eurotherm Nanodac Mini 8 program mechanism with overtemperature protection.

Lab Furnace Recycles Metallic Parts

A worldwide manufacturer of catalytic convertors, medical devices and pollution environment controls is set to receive 10 bench-top lab furnaces that will be used as part of a precious metals recovery system. The assay division recycles many parts that were originally deployed as catalytic convertors for diesel motors, medical components, and electrical parts.

The precious metals are burned out of the existing product and placed in crucibles. The crucibles are heated in the L&L Special Furnace Co., Inc. model GS1714 at temperatures between 1,800°F/982°C and 2,200°F/1,204°C. This allows any impurities in the metals to rise to the surface and be removed for further refinement. The model GS1714 has an effective work zone of 10” high by 15″ across by 13″ deep.

Large Car Bottom Furnace for US Heat Treater

HTD Size-PR LogoFrom the southeastern U.S., a leading manufacturer of specialty alloys, pipes, tubes and fittings has placed an order for a large gas fired, car bottom furnace that is scheduled for delivery in Q4 2021.

The furnace from L&L Special Furnace Company will be used for normalizing various steels and specialty alloys at temperatures up to 2,200°F (1,200°C). It will also be used to preheat, stress relieve and temper various steels and large pipe fittings.

The L&L model FCG4410 has working dimensions of 48” wide by 48” tall by 120” deep. Uniformity of ±25°F ( 12.5°C) or better is expected throughout the work zone. Complete factory testing and on-site commissioning is included.

The gas fired furnace uses six medium velocity burners that fire over and under the load. The furnace car moves in and out of the unit on supplied railroad type rails. The door is mounted to the car and is motorized with all required stops and clearances. The side seals are pneumatic and seal to the car bottom once the car is inside the furnace. Castable piers provide good support for up to a 10,000 pound load. The furnace is completely insulated with ceramic fiber modules.

The control is a floor-standing NEMA12 panel with fused disconnect at the source. All fusing and interconnections are included. The furnace is controlled by a Eurotherm Nanodac program control with two slave units. Three-zone control is provided to promote uniformity. Overtemperature protection is provided along with a six-input paperless chart recorder and jack panel.

Heat Treat Options Advance for Canadian Ceramic Coating in Aerospace Industry

HTD Size-PR LogoA Canadian leader in the coating industry will expand their heat treat capabilities with a floor-standing box furnace used for ceramic coating applications for parts in the aerospace industry.

The L&L Special Furnace Company Inc. model XLE214 is used for curing and bonding ceramic coatings to various steel bodies. This process provides extra strength to aerospace parts that are subject to various heats and stresses under normal operating conditions.

The furnace has an effective work zone of 22" wide by 16" high by 20" deep. A horizontal door with ceramic hearth and support bricks is included to incorporate the customer’s loading system. Nickle chrome elements are used in the furnace that are resistant to any potential contamination the process may cause. Heat shields provide a safe-to-touch case temperature under operating conditions.

Model XLE MDS from L&L Special Furnace Company, Inc.

The model XLE214 is controlled by a Eurotherm program control with overtemperature protection, chart recorder with jack panel, solid-state relays, and zone controls for balance of temperature gradients. Thermocouples, fusing and electrical interconnections are included. The furnace control circuit is completely tested to ensure proper operation prior to shipping.

The furnace case is sealed for use with inert atmosphere to help reduce oxygen impregnation with the parts. The furnace has a manual inert flow panel to control the inert gas flow into the oven.

The model XLE214 also includes a high-convection fan for uniformity of ±10°F/5.5°C above 500°F/260°C to 1,875°F/1,023°C. There is a 4" diameter venturi with a variable frequency drive to evacuate outgassing that occurs during the curing of the ceramics to the steel part. The system is completely automated through the program control logic.

Heat Treating Capabilities for Medical Expand at Optical Laboratory

The L&L Special Furnace Company model XLE 3636 has an effective work zone of 34” wide by 30” high by 32” deep. It features a double pivot horizontal door. The ceramic hearth is supported on lightweight castable piers. A series of heat shields are included to ensure a safe case temperature while at operating temperatures. The furnace is designed for use with inert blanketing gas for atmosphere control to minimize oxidization. A manual flow panel with regulator and flow meter is included.

A Eurotherm program control and high limit safety are standard. The furnace has a stack light mounted to the top of the control panel for an audible and visual indication of current furnace status. Solid-state relays drive the furnace, which is NFPA86 compliant. Startup and training packages are also included to help the customer set up the furnace and process.

HTD Size-PR LogoA leading Midwest manufacturer of custom firearms and rifles will use a medium-sized floor-standing box furnace for annealing gun barrels for rifles.

This is the second furnace from L&L Special Furnace Company that the manufacturer has acquired. This model is the L&L Model XLE 3636, which has a work zone of 34” wide by 30” high by 32” deep. It is designed for use with inert blanketing gas for atmosphere control to minimize surface de-carb.

Other features include a programmable flow panel with regulator and two flow meters for high and nominal flow rates along with a visual flow indicator light are included. There is a high-temperature air-cooled fan with packing gland to maintain the case seal integrity. A cast alloy hearth provides a good flat work platform for the fixturing of parts.

Honeywell controls and a Yokogawa recorder enable temperature control and chart representation of the furnace cycle. The power control is a series of solid-state relays and the furnace is constructed in accordance with NFPA86 compliance for safety.

  • American Axle & Manufacturing Holdings, Inc. (AAM) recently announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement to sell its U.S. iron casting operations to funds managed by Gamut Capital Management. Across 10 manufacturing facilities, Grede develops, manufactures, assembles and supplies ductile, gray, and specialty iron castings and machined components for automotive, commercial vehicle and industrial markets.  AAM will retain its El Carmen, Mexico, iron casting operations, which will continue to provide significant vertical integration benefits to AAM, while also continuing to serve external customers in Mexico and other global markets.
  • Magnetic Specialties, Inc. (MSI), which manufactures heavy-duty power supplies for the electric furnace industry, specialty transformers and reactors for various industries, and smaller specialty transformers for the electrical and electronic industry, announced the construction of a new 4,800 SF addition to its plant space in Telford, Pennsylvania. Mike Afflerbach, President of MSI, said the building addition is essential for added efficiencies and expansion of useable floor space in his main manufacturing building.

Equipment Chatter

  • A nitriding system was supplied to Hydro Extrusion Solutions in Trzcianka, Poland, to address the company’s need for improved process performance and more accurate control of nitriding results. The Nitrex N-EXT 812 nitriding system provided by Nitrex Metals replaces a decommissioned nitrider that was phased out several years ago due to extrusion die failures and inconsistent metallurgical results.
  • An electric annealing furnace was manufactured for a major manufacturer by Gasbarre Thermal Processing Systems. This is the second 48″ wide belt furnace Gasbarre has supplied this company. The furnace came equipped with 3 heating zones that can heat up to 1200 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • A 350°F (177°C) clean room oven, No. 1048, being used for the final cure of hardcoated optical lenses, was recently supplied by Grieve to the customer at its facility.
  • A leading manufacturer of calcium phosphate materials used for medical devices recently purchased a furnace from L&L Special Furnace Co, Inc. This is the fifth Model GS1714 furnace shipped to this company. The calcium phosphate powder is sintered in the furnace at a temperature of about 2,200°F (1,204°C).
  • ALD recently delivered a SyncroTherm system to a well-known institute in the Beijing area, the first for the Chinese market.

Personnel and Company Chatter

  • Richard Cammarano has been selected as president and CEO of Plymouth, Massachusetts-based Tech-Etch Inc., which produces precision components and parts.
  • With KKR’s recent acquisition of Hyperion from Sandvik, Ron Voigt will assume the role of Chief Executive Officer of Hyperion, responsible for the strategic direction and operating performance of the company. Mr. Voigt succeeds Johan Israelsson, who is transitioning into a newly created role as Senior Vice President of Strategy and Alliances.
  • Boeing and Embraer recently announced a Memorandum of Understanding to establish a strategic partnership which proposes the formation of a joint venture comprising the commercial aircraft and services business of Embraer that would strategically align with Boeing’s commercial development, production, marketing and lifecycle services operations. Under the terms of the agreement, Boeing will hold an 80 percent ownership stake in the joint venture and Embraer will own the remaining 20 percent stake.
  • With the construction of an 85,000-square-foot facility, Hitchiner Manufacturing Co., Inc., which produces investment castings for the aerospace, defense, and automotive industries, is expanding its New Hampshire operations .

Equipment Chatter

  • Four electrically heated enhanced duty walk-in ovens have been shipped to an automotive parts manufacturer by Wisconsin Oven Corporation, to be used for aging aluminum parts. In addition, Wisconsin Oven shipped an electrically heated three drawer oven to a supplier of the oil and gas industry. The custom drawer oven will be used for preheating tubes and cores.
  • Eighteen furnaces have been shipped to companies in six states in the U.S. and two companies overseas by Ipsen USA during the second quarter. These shipments included multiple atmosphere furnaces, plus the shipment of one of the largest vacuum furnaces Ipsen has ever built, featuring a 210,000-pound (95,254 kg) load capacity. Ten atmosphere box furnaces were shipped to a company in the aerospace industry, while one temper furnace went to a U.S.-based commercial heat treater. Other shipments included three TITAN H2 2-bar furnaces and three TITAN H6 2-bar furnaces.
  • A major US manufacturer of electronic components has placed an order for Despatch PND inert atmosphere ovens with FLW Southeast.
  • Two electric box furnaces have been supplied by L&L Special Furnace Company to a Midwestern machine manufacturer that builds high-speed cutting equipment, tools, and supplies for various industries, including industrial manufacturing, automotive, metal materials, and aerospace.
  • A 950°F (510°C) belt conveyor oven from Grieve, No. 831, has been supplied to a company to be used for heat treating springs.

Kudos Chatter

  • ThermoFusion is the only heat treater in Northern California to maintain Supplier Procedure Approval Requests (SPAR) for carbonitriding, nitriding, malcomizing, and general quench and temper work for Northrop Grumman.
  • Fluxtrol Inc. presented two awards during TPiM 2018. The Student Research Award was presented to Virginia Judge from the Colorado School of Mines, whose research was deemed by judges to be of extraordinary quality and impact to the field of thermal processing. The Academic Research Award/Scholarship was awarded to Professor Bob Cryderman and the Colorado School of Mines for excellence in academic research in the field of thermal processing.
  • Sciaky, Inc., a leading provider of metal additive manufacturing (AM) solutions, recently announced that it achieved qualification with its Electron Beam Additive Manufacturing (EBAM®) process, stemming from the completion of qualification testing performed by Lockheed Martin Space on a multi-year development program to create giant, high-pressure tanks, which carry fuel for satellites.
