  1. A new feature on Ipsen’s PdMetrics dashboard monitors incoming three-phase utilities, voltage and frequency on vacuum furnaces. This addition offers further diagnostics for the diffusion pump heater assembly.
  2. AMETEK STC’s JOFRA ASC-400 Advanced Signal Calibrator now includes a built-in help function that offers a graphical solution to connect with the ASC-400s current set-up. The end result is time saved and reduced errors.

  4. Solar Atmospheres of California (SCA) has installed and recently commissioned the state’s largest commercial Solar + Energy Storage System. By combining onsite generation, an advanced energy storage system, and an artificial intelligence powered analytics platform, SCA will optimize energy use by automatically switching between onsite generation, battery power, and grid power.
  5. Bodycote announced the opening of a new Syracuse, NY heat treatment facility.
  6. SECO/VACUUM, SECO/WARWICK’s North American’s vacuum furnace company, received orders in 2020 from the aerospace and defense sectors, with the tool and die market also placing orders.
  7. Paulo announced plans to double the size of its Monterrey, Mexico facility to meet the demand from the automotive industry for the heat treatment of brake components in passenger cars and trucks.
  8. Ambrell’s first system retired after nearly 35 years of service.

  2. The Plibrico Company, a global leader in monolithic refractory technology, announced Eric Downing as branch manager of the company’s Florida and Georgia locations following the announcement that current branch manager, Dale Johnson, would be retiring. Scott Forster has joined Plibrico as project manager, responsible for estimating, engineering, and managing projects in the company’s Buffalo, New York location.
  3. Dustin Lawhon and Alex Janeway have both accepted expanded responsibilities as national sales managers at Paulo.

  1. AFC-Holcroft has announced the expansion of sales territory by their sales representative, Vectorr Industries LLC, to now include the Province of Ontario, Canada.
  2. Bodycote announced the opening of its new facility in Elgins, Illinois.
  3. HI-POWER, a Holtec International and Eos Energy Storage joint venture, formed a five-year partnering agreement with Solar Atmospheres of Western PA to provide an energy-efficient, non-lithium, long-duration energy storage solution using battery technology.
  4. Rockford Systems LLC dba Rockford Combustion Solutions launched a new website providing combustion safety and training solutions for organizations that work with fuel-fired equipment.
  5. The ECM USA Synergy Center located in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin, showcases ECM equipment and provides pre-production testing. This fully functional test lab houses capabilities to perform many thermal processes across many markets.
  6. Tenova has signed a contract with the HBIS Group for the implementation of the Paradigm Project, a high tech hydrogen energy development and utilization plant. This will be the world’s first DRI production plant powered by hydrogen-enriched gas.
  7. Tenova introduced its TSX SmartBurner for reheating furnaces to be installed in industrial plants with potentially zero carbon dioxide emissions. It is the first flameless burner of the megawatt variety that has been tested successfully with 100% of hydrogen.
  8. Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH, the largest steel subsidiary in the Salzgitter Group, has commissioned Tenova for the construction of μDRAL, a demonstration plant. The plant will produce Direct Reduced Iron (DRI), using up to 100% hydrogen as reducing agent

 

Kudos Chatter

  1. Northrop Grumman Defense Systems recognized Solar Atmospheres of Western PA as a top-performing supplier in 2020 with the Outstanding Customer Service Award.
  2. Lincotek has been named among the winners of the Eccellenze d’Impresa 2020 award in the category Innovation and Technology. The prize, now in its seventh year, recognizes Italian companies that excel in extraordinary performance and is organized by Eccellenze d’Impresa.
  3. Solar Atmospheres of Western PA achieved Nadcap AC7101/4 accreditation for their captive metallography laboratory and became an approved Boeing Process Source (D1-4426).
  4. Constellium’s facility in Bowling Green, Kentucky lowered carbon emissions and so received an award from the Tennessee Valley Authority for being an “exemplary environmental steward.”
  5. HT-MX has successfully increased its Nadcap scope to become Latin America’s first heat treat plant certified for HIPing steel and nickel alloys, and the heat treatment of stainless steel, aluminum, and carbon steel heat treatment.

This emergency archeological excavation came about to safeguard threatened antiquities. Heat Treat History Offers Promise to the Present

In today’s article, Heat Treat Today’s editorial staff has gathered noteworthy reflections of heat treaters who are looking to the past to offer hope to present circumstances. Read more to see that while the present seems paused with Covid-19, the past offers promise of growth and change through challenges.

Like many markets, the heat treating industry is seeking to make the best out of this summer of 2020, and even though the market is looking more positive by the day, there are many who still look for a sense of normalcy. However, with leaders looking at historical moments in heat treat, they remind us that while the present seems paused with Covid-19, the past offers promise of growth and change through the challenges of life.

A major reach into the past is a throwback to the 90th century BC called “An Interactive History of Metallurgy.” In this historical timeline, Bodycote presents an engaging look at copper, bronze, iron, and tin through the centuries. The developments include detailed information, mostly funneled from Wikipedia, like the fact that bronze alloy in 12th century English candlesticks contained a degree of silver, antimony, and arsenic. And the modern, continuous development of steel is believed to have begun in the carbon furnaces of Sub-Saharan African communities.

On June 30, 2020, SECO/WARWICK released an “anniversary reflection” to commemorate the achievements of the Group in the first half of 2020. Among these is the 10th anniversary of their Chinese branch which has now become a recognized leader of CAB systems in heat treat, creating furnaces for aluminum brazing in controlled atmospheres. They conclude their message with a word from Sławomir Woźniak, President of the Management Board, saying, “We wish that health, patience and faith – embracing the world at large – will return to normal.”

Finally, a recent LinkedIn post from Shane Higgins, Field Sales from Special Quality Alloys Ltd, shared a lunch-time crowd favorite: Sanderson’s Weir, built in the 1580s. With two iron forges on either side of the River Don in Sheffield, this low dam was built to provide power to the industrial work. Changes in the nature of industry has allowed a 20-year project along the River Don in Sheffield and Rotherham to permit a fish pass for salmon after 200 years without. It is impressive that the location that once produced iron still houses metalworking business.

Global Heat Treat Provider To Open New Facility in Illinois

One of the world’s largest providers of heat treatments and specialist thermal processing services is opening a new location. Bodycote will soon unveil its state-of-the-art facility in Elgin, Illinois.

The new purpose-built facility has been designed as a replacement for Bodycote’s ageing facility in Melrose Park, Illinois. The Elgin facility will support manufacturing supply chains in the Midwest region. The Melrose Park facility will be closed once the transfer of customers’ work has been completed.

Bodycote continues to invest in acquiring, updating, and building new facilities with new capacity and more operationally efficient services. The new Elgin facility is part of this ongoing strategy to provide the best possible capabilities, mix, and geographical network to better serve customers.

Tom Gibbons, president of Aerospace, Defense & Energy, Heat Treat and Surface Technology at Bodycote, commented, “I am delighted to be able to announce the opening of our plant in Elgin, Illinois. Bodycote Acquires Aerospace Surface Coating Specialist

Bodycote, a leading provider of heat treatment and specialist thermal processing services, has entered into an agreement to acquire Ellison Surface Technologies, of Mason, Ohio, which will provide thermal spray and engineered coating surface technology services to the aerospace industry.

Combining Ellison’s thermal spray and engineered coating surface technology services with Bodycote’s services and global infrastructure will broaden their service offering to aerospace customers.

Group Chief Executive of Bodycote Stephen Harris said, “Ellison’s business is one that we have long respected and is a perfect strategic fit for Bodycote’s aerospace and Specialist Technologies’ businesses. Completion of the transaction is contingent on various regulatory filings’ processes; it is anticipated that the transaction will complete during the first quarter of 2020.

  • A leading provider of metal and carbon fiber 3D printers, Markforged, recently announced the opening of a new manufacturing facility in Billerica, Massachusetts. The 25,000 square-foot space will enable the company to more than double its production capacity, support increased demand for Markforged 3D printers, and create new jobs.
  • Rodrigo Belloc has been appointed the president of Gerdau Special Steel North America, Jackson, Mich. He replaces Mark Marcucci, who is retiring from his position after 28 years with the company and 43 in the steel industry. Previously, Belloc was CEO of Gerdau Diaco in Colombia and Gerdau Metaldom in the Dominican Republic.
  • Allied Mineral Products opened the doors to its newest precast shapes manufacturing facility near Johannesburg, South Africa. This marks Allied’s sixth precast shapes location worldwide.
  • Vorteq Coil Finishers LLC,  a provider of coil coating services for metal products, recently acquired the assets of California-based Western Metal Decorating, which produces coated aluminum and steel products serving pre-painted markets. As part of the transaction, the Western operation will be renamed Vorteq Pacific LLC.
  • Leica Microsystems is delighted to announce a new UK partnership with Struers Ltd., the UK’s leading manufacturer of equipment, consumables, and services for materialographic analysis. Leica microscopes, accessories, and imaging products specifically designed for industrial and material analysis applications will now also be available from Struers Ltd. in the UK.
  • Getec Industries added friction stir welding (FSW) services to its Thermal Solutions division in Torrance, California. The new capabilities will enable the company to supply large extruded aluminum heat sinks to the electronics industries.

  • Inductotherm Heating & Welding recently announced the successful commissioning of a new Thermatool 250kW CFI welder to GRC LLC.

  • MTI recently recognized three Solar employees for their commitment to MTI. On October 5, Bob Hill, President of Solar Atmospheres of Western PA, was honored with the prestigious M. Lance Miller Legend Award, in recognition of his leadership and lifetime commitment to the heat treating industry and MTI. Hill’s heat treating career began in 1980 when he joined Precision Heat Treating, Inc. as Vice President. Hill moved on to Solar Atmospheres of Souderton PA in 1995. Within five years, Hill was promoted to President, to head Solar’s newest venture 370 miles away in Western PA. In addition to Hill’s involvement with MTI, two other employees from the Solar Family of Companies—Patrick Reilly and John Hahn—are recent graduates from YES, MTI’s Leadership Training Program
  • Innovation Leader awards recently went to SECO/WARWICK for the third time.  The “Business Leader” event is a prestigious competition. The jury gives awards to the companies distinguished by their transparency and business honesty with innovative successes as their trademarks. On October 28, 2019, at the prestigious gala, Katarzyna Sawka, Global Group Marketing Director SECO/WARWICK, received the Innovation Leader Award on behalf of the company.
  • Bodycote recently celebrated Dan McCurdy, who retired in June 2019 after 21 years of service, as this year’s recipient of the prestigious HTS George H. Bodeen Heat Treating Achievement Award. Dan received the award at a ceremony during this year’s AMS International Heat Treat Conference event that was held in Detroit on October 15-17, 2019.
