15th CAB Line Ventures to Mexico

After 15 years of collaboration, a new CAB furnace designed for production of heat exchangers for delivery vehicles, trucks, and cars is set to begin operating in Monterrey Mexico.

This 15-year collaboration between SECO/WARWICK and their Asian partner began in 2010 when the two began working together on solutions for heat exchanger production for trucks, passenger cars, and new energy technologies. The new CAB line that will operate in Mexico is equipped with a thermal degreasing furnace, preheating chambers, a radiation furnace, a deicing furnace, a final cooling chamber, and an advanced control system. These features are designed to meet the requirements of the automotive industry, as well as ensure long-term and reliable operation.

Major Auto Maker Pledges $20 Billion for US

A major automaker announced a $20 billion investment in United States-based manufacturing.

Hyundai‘s investment, which the automaker described as a pledge to increase localized production in the United States, will create over 1,000 jobs. As part of the pledge, the company will open a $5.8 billion steel plant in Louisiana.

This near-shoring move by Hyundai is one among many automakers who are currently planning major U.S. investments, including Stellantis, which promised $5 billion to U.S manufacturing and Honda, which is expected to produce new Civic hybrids in Indiana.

Automotive Manufacturer Orders Second Endo Generator

An automotive manufacturer in South America has recently placed a follow-up order for a second Endothermic generator from a manufacturer of industrial process control, automation, and digitalization solutions with North American locations.

UPC-Marathon, a Nitrex company, installed a 200 m³/h EndoFlex unit last year. The new generator, with a similar capacity, aims to enhance stability, to ensure consistent composition and gas flows, and to prioritize quality of automotive gear boxes while achieving efficiencies in heat treatment operations.

Prior to adopting the EndoFlex solution, the manufacturer relied on four generator units, each with a capacity of 70 m³/h and consuming 80 kW of power. With the same 80 kW of power consumption, the EndoFlex generator delivers a 200 m³/h capacity.

This transition to the new unit represents a 75% reduction in power consumption and a contribution to operational efficiency and sustainability efforts. The new generator streamlines maintenance procedures, adheres to stringent quality standards, and reduces CO2 emissions. Control over gas quality and production for the neutral hardening furnace enhances product quality, reduces operating costs, and optimizes energy consumption. By automatically adjusting gas production to match real-time furnace demand, the generator eliminates overproduction and waste.

Horizontal Quench System for Automotive Industry

An East Troy, WI, heat treat systems manufacturer announced the shipment of an electrically heated horizontal quench system to a manufacturer of products for the automotive industry, specifically for aluminum solution treatment.

Wisconsin Oven manufactured the system with a maximum temperature of 1,200°F and interior chamber dimensions of 2' x 2' x 2'. The system has the capacity to heat 450 pounds of aluminum parts plus the steel basket within 60 minutes. Temperature uniformity of +/- 10°F at set points 850°F and 1,050°F was verified with a nine point profile test prior to shipment.

This horizontal quench system provides a 15-second quench delay from when the door begins to open until the load is fully submerged in the tank. The quench is manual, where the operator pulls the load out of the oven and onto the quench elevator using a hook. "This horizontal quench system was designed with a manual quench which is a cost-effective option and still ensures there are no improperly processed parts," commented Doug Christiansen, senior application engineer at Wisconsin Oven. "The system also features foldable unload wheel rails to save on floor space.”

Ipsen Ships Seven Vacuum Furnaces

Ipsen recently shipped seven furnaces around the globe, which will be used to support the Aerospace, Automotive and Power industries. This selection of shipments included both custom-built furnaces and standard TITAN® furnaces that were sent to customers in Alabama, California, Missouri and Texas, as well as China and Japan.

The equipment shipped ranged from a vertical, bottom-loading MetalMaster® with an 84″ x 84″ (2,134 mm x 2,134 mm) molybdenum hot zone traveling to California to a TITAN® H2 vacuum furnace that was sent to Japan. Other furnaces shipped included horizontal MetalMaster furnaces, H2- and H4-sized furnaces from Ipsen’s TITAN line and a Global Vertical furnace from Ipsen’s TurboTreater® line. Overall, these shipments represent Ipsen’s ability to provide sophisticated and intuitive heat-treating solutions through an all-inclusive product line that supports various applications and processes.

New Metallurgical Department in Czech Republic

Global testing group Exova has made a series of investments at its laboratory in Plzeň, Czech Republic to extend its range of capabilities for customers within the global aerospace market, and further grow its presence in Mainland Europe.

Central to the laboratory’s investment is a new metallurgical department with increased capacity. This includes modifications to the facility and the acquisition of new state of the art equipment such as optical microscopy and precision cutting machinery to meet the growing demand from the aerospace industry. In addition to the new equipment, the lab has invested in its computer-based operating systems to increase efficiency at each stage of testing, improving both operations and reporting.

As well as a broad scope of mechanical testing, the Plzeň laboratory provides metallurgical assessment, including macro assessment and mapping and a range of micro examinations, along with corrosion resistance testing. Its customers work predominantly in the aerospace sector, but the laboratory conducts testing on forgings and welding, so can work across the automotive, power generation and general engineering sectors as well.

Jiri Fidransky, general manager of the Plzeň laboratory, said: “These upgrades have streamlined our day-to-day operations and reflect the growth we are seeing in the aerospace sector.
