Publisher’s Page: A Short (and Mostly Accurate) History of Publishing in the Heat Treat Industry

Heat Treat Today publishes four print magazines a year, and included in each is a letter from the publisher, Doug Glenn. This letter first appeared in Heat Treat Today‘s Trade Show Edition, September 2019.

Doug Glenn, Publisher, Heat Treat Today

There is a history in every industry and it is fascinating to go back and see how we’ve gotten to where we are, especially when you think about trade publications in the heat treat industry. These publications are quite a bit more important than many know. They’ve helped advance the industry and have played a major role keeping the industry abreast of the latest technologies.

In the heat treat world, the first industry publication appeared in the Steel City, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, compliments of I. Stanley Wishoski. In 1924, Mr. Wishoski published the first edition of Fuels & Furnaces, which changed its name to Industrial Heating in the early 1930s. Industrial Heating is still around pumping out excellent heat treat content every month.

Mr. Wishoski’s son-in-law, Charles (Chuck) McClelland, assumed ownership of Industrial Heating. Some industry veterans, Mike Kasprzyk of INEX, Inc. for example, actually met Mr. McClelland, a privilege I had only once in passing.

Charles (Chuck)
McClelland, owner/
publisher of Industrial
Heating up to 1988

There were four individuals associated with Mr. McClelland that have contributed significantly to the publishing industry. Stan Lasday was hired by McClelland and was the editor of Industrial Heating for years, retiring in roughly 1994. Two of Chuck McClelland’s daughters worked for Industrial Heating: Beth McClelland and Becky McClelland. Becky is still working for the publication. Kathy Pisano, a name very familiar to hundreds of heat treat industry vendors, is also still employed by Industrial Heating. Both Kathy and Becky are, by my estimation, two of the great unsung heroes of the heat treat publishing world.

In roughly 1989, the McClelland family sold Industrial Heating to what is today BNP Media. Jim Henderson was the owner of BNP at that time and his righthand man was Dave Lurie who was responsible for assimilating the new publication into the company. Dave did a masterful job building Industrial Heating from being the #2 or #3 magazine in the industry to being the number one publication. In fact, during his tenure and the 20 years that I was with the publication, Industrial Heating tripled in size and is still the leading publication in the industry under the leadership of publisher Erik Klingerman and seasoned editors Bill Mayer and Reed Miller.

Dave Lurie, with BNP
Media, published
Industrial Heating in the
early 1990’s.

In the early 1990s, the number one heat treating publication was Heat Treating. It was owned by Chilton/CBS and later sold to Penton Publishing. Penton struggled with it and changed the size of the publication and its name to Heat Treating Digest. It soon failed and folded.

The Monty (www.themonty) started sometime in the 1990s as the first online only heat treating media outlet. Gordon Montgomery’s son, Jordan, is now involved and seems to be pushing the site to new heights.

Another very competent publishing company from Pelham, Alabama, Media Solutions, started Thermal Processing in the 2000s. This publication was a spinoff of their gear magazine, Gear Solutions. I can personally attest that this is a good group of people doing good work. David and Teresa Cooper along with Chad Morrison are the key players at Thermal Processing.

ASM International started and shuttered one or more heat treat publications over the years – remember Heat Treating Progress? HTPro is ASM’s current mostly-online heat treat e-newsletter. ASM, of course, is a publishing power-house, but mostly with books, not so much with industry publications.

Heat Treat Today, the magazine you’re reading now, started in 2016.

Today’s Heat Treat Media Brands

So that’s how we got to where we are today with three print media brands in the North American heat treat market: Industrial Heating, Thermal Processing, and Heat Treat Today, and a couple of digital-only brands, The Monty and HTPro. But more importantly, it is through one or more of these industry trade publications that you’ve learned more than you know about the technologies, processes, products, and companies in the ever-changing heat treat world. Aluminum Giant Reaffirms Commitment to Acquire Competitor

A global aluminum rolling manufacturer recently reaffirmed its commitment to complete the acquisition of an Ohio-based aluminum rolled products producer, despite a U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) lawsuit to block the transaction.

Novelis Inc. gave this statement regarding its proposed acquisition of Aleris Corporation, stating the company “intends to vigorously defend against the DOJ’s challenge”, believing it to be “without merit.”

The “acquisition will strengthen the aluminum industry’s ability to compete against steel in U.S. automotive body sheet market,” notes a release from Novelis.

Steve Fisher, President and CEO, Novelis Inc

“The DOJ lawsuit is based on the contention that the only relevant competition among automotive body sheet providers is that among aluminum manufacturers such as Novelis and Aleris. It ignores competition from steel automotive body sheet, even though steel automotive body sheet is currently used for nearly 90 percent of the market.”

“The day-to-day reality of the automotive body sheet market is aluminum automotive body sheet striving to take share from steel, and the steel automotive body sheet companies fighting back,” said Steve Fisher, president and CEO, Novelis Inc. “We are disappointed that the DOJ has missed this, but also confident that in the next phase of this process the full scope of the competition we face will be recognized appropriately. Our merger with Aleris threatens no one, and to the contrary will strengthen our ability to compete against steel, meet growing customer demand for aluminum, achieve our recycling goals, and bolster our sustainability platform worldwide.”

Assistant Attorney General Makan Delrahim of the Justice Department’s Antitrust Division

The Department of Justice filed the civil antitrust lawsuit seeking to block Novelis’s proposed acquisition of Aleris “in order to preserve competition in the North American market for rolled aluminum sheet for automotive applications.”

The Antitrust Division’s lawsuit alleges that the transaction would combine two of only four North American producers of aluminum auto body sheet.

“Automakers increasingly need aluminum auto body sheet to satisfy American consumers’ demand for larger vehicles that are lighter and more fuel-efficient. The loss of a competing supplier of aluminum auto body sheet ultimately would harm American car buyers,” said Assistant Attorney General Makan Delrahim of the Justice Department’s Antitrust Division.

The Antitrust Division has agreed with defendants to refer the matter to binding arbitration should certain conditions be triggered.  The arbitration would resolve the issue of product market definition. This would mark the first time the Antitrust Division is using this arbitration authority to resolve a matter.

“This arbitration would allow the Antitrust Division to resolve the dispositive issue of market definition in this case efficiently and effectively, saving taxpayer resources,” said Delrahim. “Alternative dispute resolution is an important tool that the Antitrust Division can and will use, in appropriate circumstances, to maximize its enforcement resources to protect American consumers.”

According to legal analysts for corporate law firm Jones Day, “Most DOJ merger challenges have taken more than five months from filing of a complaint to a district court decision.”

“For this reason, the parties may have believed that pursuing arbitration on market definition—a topic that in traditional litigation can consume significant time for discovery and briefing—would provide them with deal certainty sooner than litigation. DOJ, in turn, may have viewed the decision as consistent with its larger policy goal of streamlining the merger review process.”

Heat Treating Chamfered Parts: Before or After Makes a Difference

Source: Gear Technology

“For years, I have always told people who ask me that my machines pretty much don’t care if a part is hard or soft,” says James Richards of James Engineering.

In a simple experiment, Richards ran several parts through multiple machining and finishing processes to determine whether the hardness or softness of certain steel alloys had any effect on chamfering. What he found regarding hardness or softness did not surprise him. What he did note were the different outcomes that resulted from heat treating the part before or after chamfering.

“We have yet to find a material that we cannot create a chamfer and/or edge finish on. As to whether we chamfer before or after heat-treating—that’s a very different story.” ~ James Richards

This week’s Technical Tuesday highlights Richards’ article “Chamfering: Hard vs Soft Parts and Before vs After Heat Treating”, which appeared in the July 2019 issue of Gear Technology.

Steel Product Manufacturer Announces Ohio Expansion

A global steel product company recently reported plans to expand its successful Delta, Ohio, steel plant.

BlueScope Steel, a leading manufacturer of coated and painted steel products in the US, reported their board’s approval to expand their North Star plant in Delta, Ohio, pending anticipated receipt of necessary air permits and local and state incentives.

BlueScope said they hope this expansion will increase domestic steelmaking capacity in the US by approximately 850,000 additional metric tonnes per annum.

Mark Vassella, managing director and CEO at BlueScope

“This project fits our strategy perfectly,” said Mark Vassella, managing director and CEO at BlueScope. “It offers long-term sustainable earnings growth from a high-quality asset. It is a significant tribute to the 400 employees at Delta who work hard to make it such a strong performing asset.”

Mr. Vassella also said this project has even more growth opportunities because its debottlenecking potential could increase steelmaking capacity by a further 500,000 metric tonnes per annum.

BlueScope estimates the cost of the project to be $700 million. They aim to commission the expansion in mid FY2022, with full “ramp up” approximately 18 months later.
