“The Bright World of Metals” Will Shine in Dusseldorf June 25-29, 2019

Forming the “The Bright World of Metals”, the four trade fairs GIFA, METEC, THERMPROCESS, and NEWCAST will take place from June 25–29, 2019 at the fairgrounds in Düsseldorf, Germany. The latest advancements in foundry technology, metallurgy, thermo process technology and castings will be on display.

The range presented at GIFA2019 will cover the entire market for foundry plants and equipment, die-casting machinery, and melting operations. METEC 2019 will present plant and equipment for iron and steel making, non-ferrous metal production and for casting and pouring molten steel as well as rolling and steel mills. Industrial furnaces, industrial heat treatment plants, and thermal processes will be showcased at THERMPROCESS 2019, while NEWCAST 2019 will focus on the presentation of castings.

The trade fair quartet will be complemented by an extensive ancillary program. During GIFA 2019, the World Foundrymen Organization (www.thewfo.com) will hold the WFO Technical Forum – the international conference for the process technology industry – and the National Association of the German Foundry Industry (BDG) will organize the GIFA Conference. ESTAD, the “European Steel Technology and Application Days (www.metec-estad2019.com) organized by the VDEh Steel Institute in co-operation with Messe Düsseldorf, will be a major feature at METEC 2019. The five-day ESTAD will begin a day before METEC starts (June 24), addressing “Industry 4.0” issues as well as the latest technologies for steel and iron production, surface treatment, additive manufacturing technologies and energy and environmental topics. Another important event at METEC will be the “European Metallurgical Conference (EMC) organized by the German Society of Metallurgists and Miners/GDMB (www.emc.gdmb.de) from June 23–26, 2019.

At THERMPROCESS 2019, the FOGI Special Show organized by VDMA Forschungsgemeinschaft Industrieofenbau e.V. and the THERMPROCESS Symposium organized by VDMA Metallurgy will complement the exhibits. Special events at NEWCAST 2019 will be the NEWCAST FORUM organized by the Association of German Foundrymen (VDG) and the NEWCAST Award.

When last held in 2015, the four trade fairs attracted 78,000 visitors from more than 120 countries and 2,214 exhibitors. International participation increased again compared to the previous event:  56% of the visitors and 51% of the exhibitors came from outside Germany.

CHTA Announces Heat Treatment Sessions for October Conference in UK

The UK’s Contract Heat Treatment Association will again be partnering with the Surface Engineering Association and Wolfson Heat Treatment Centre in co-sponsoring the second “Surface Engineering & Heat Treatment Industry Conference/Exhibition” on 13 October 2017. Hauck Heat Treatment Dzierżoniów Installs New EMO Washing Machine

Hauck Heat Treatment Dzierżoniów recently installed at its facility in Poland a new EMO Oberflächentechnik cleaning and degreasing machine (model VAIOCS S) with a batch size of 1220mm x 910mm x 760mm.

The EMO degreaser can use organic solvents such as hydrocarbons (AIII), modified alcohols and chlorinated hydrocarbons to allow perfectly tailored cleaning, ensuring all surfaces are free of dirt and residues. The parts are fully and efficiently dried due to the integrated vacuum drying system. Thanks to the patented design of the machine, it can clean and dry parts with even the most complex geometry – even those which are difficult for other cleaning and degreasing machines. The technology used in the EMO degreaser is state-of-the-art and allows environmentally friendly processes and a reduced energy consumption.

Electro-Spec Expansion to Include Heat Treating Services

Electro-Spec, Inc., a specialty plating manufacturer headquartered in Franklin, Indiana, announced plans to locate a new 10,000 square foot production operations in Lexington, South Carolina. The facility will be outfitted to serve the medical, telecommunications, aerospace, and automotive industries with electroplating and passivating processes, including heat treating, annealing, and stress relieving services suitable for a range of gold, silver, copper alloy, nickel alloy materials.

Process annealing capabilities go up to 1,000 °F, carried out in a protective nitrogen environment to eliminate heat scale. Parts are prepared in a specialized pre-treating process, which includes vacuum vapor degreasing and thorough cleaning.

With a customer base in North America, Asia, and Europe, Electro-Spec projects the new development will bring $3.1 million of capital investment and create 53 new jobs at the facility located at 307 Industrial Drive in Lexington. Hiring is expected to begin in Fall 2017.

“South Carolina’s reputation as a manufacturing powerhouse continues to help us attract companies from around the world. We’re proud that Electro-Spec has selected Lexington County to establish its new operations, and we look forward to watching this partnership grow in the years to come,” Secretary of Commerce Bobby Hitt said.

Diamond Heat Treat Acquires Vacuum Furnace to Support IGT and Aerospace Industries

Diamond Heat Treat recently purchased a TITAN® H6 vacuum furnace with 6-bar gas quenching to expand their capabilities and serve additional market sectors, including IGT and Aerospace.

While Diamond Heat Treat – acquired by Calvert Street Capital Partners – already has three vacuum furnaces at their Rockford, Illinois, facility, the new furnace’s range of process capabilities allows them to better address key needs for different markets. According to Mike Sobieski, CEO of the thermal processing strategy, “This addition of technical capabilities is in line with our strategy of partnering with family-owned thermal processing companies and then investing in both people and equipment to enable profitable growth.”

One of Ipsen’s modular heat-treating systems, the furnace features a 36” x 48” x 36” (915 mm x 1,220 mm x 915 mm) work zone with a 3,000-pound (1,361 kg) load capacity. This furnace is also capable of operating at temperatures of 1,000 °F to 2,400 °F (538 °C to 1,316 °C) with ±10 °F (±6 °C) temperature uniformity.

Diamond’s purchase is consistent with Calvert Street Capital Partner’s strategy to partner with, support, and develop commercial heat treating manufacturers as described in a March 2017 interview with John Hubbard produced by Heat Treat Radio.

Bloom Reorganizes Sales Structure to Support Key Industries

Bloom Engineering, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, has reorganized its sales team into two industry focused teams in an effort to concentrate on key industry sectors of aluminum and steel.

Don Whipple and Scott Brown will head the aluminum and steel teams respectively. Each team will focus on its own area of expertise and will be able to provide better support to existing industry customers. Furthermore, it will be easier to coordinate efforts to capture more market share and to bring in new customers.

Mr. Whipple has spent his entire career in combustion with a particular focus on the aluminum industry and has designed, commissioned and fixed countless systems for all facets of aluminum production. Mr. Brown comes to Bloom from a furnace OEM, bringing a depth of knowledge and experience of steel making, with a particular focus on processing lines such as galvanizing and annealing.

Michael Black, Vice President of Sales, is excited about the possibilities. “Scott and Don bring a tremendous wealth of experience in their respective segments of steel and aluminum; [the new sales structure] should help us spread their specific application knowledge within the group, and more importantly to our customers.”

Matt Valancius has been promoted to Director of Marketing and Aftersales Support, including all spare parts sales and service support. Mr. Valancius has held various positions in Bloom over the past twelve years, ably leading the marketing group immediately prior to the promotion. His expanded role will allow for a cohesive approach to aftermarket activities for a smoother customer experience.

Dana to Supply Axles, Driveshafts for 2018 Isuzu Trucks

Dana Incorporated announced that it will begin supplying axles and driveshafts for the 2018 Isuzu FTR from Isuzu Commercial Truck of America.  Production of this new Class 6 medium-duty truck will begin mid-2017.

The 2018 Isuzu FTR will be assembled with a Spicer® single-reduction drive axle, Spicer® E-Series steer axles, and a Spicer Life® Series driveshaft.

“We chose Spicer axles and driveshafts for the 2018 Isuzu FTR due to Dana’s dedication to quality and innovation,” said Shaun Skinner, president of Isuzu Commercial Truck of America.  “This truck represents our vision of the future for the medium-duty industry.  The truck of tomorrow needs to be fuel efficient, maneuverable, environmentally friendly, and offer a low cost of ownership.  Dana’s driveline components will help achieve all of those objectives.”

The 2018 Isuzu FTR is designed for city delivery applications, such as beverage, box, and refrigerated box trucks.  Like all Isuzu trucks, the 2018 Isuzu FTR will feature a low cab forward design for increased visibility and maneuverability, features that are crucial to these types of applications.  These trucks will be powered by a segment-first Isuzu 4HK1-TC 5.2 liter turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engine, and will also include an Allison 2000 Series automatic transmission.

Dana’s driveline components help to optimize the 2018 Isuzu FTR for durability and efficiency.  Spicer single-reduction drive axles have been engineered with stronger wheel differentials to absorb shock, providing maximum robustness for city delivery applications.  Spicer E-Series steer axles with a new lightweight beam design are the lightest weight solution on the market, weighing up to 69 pounds less than competitive offerings.  Spicer Life Series medium-duty driveshafts are the premier drivetrain offering for this market.  Precision balanced for reduced noise, vibration, and harshness and permanently lubricated with a sealed spline, these driveshafts have been designed for reduced maintenance and extended product life.

Saudi Aramco Signs to Set Up High-End Forging & Casting Manufacturing Facility

Saudi Aramco has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with GE (NYSE: GE) and Cividale SpA of Italy to build the Middle East and North Africa’s first-of-its-kind high-end forging & casting manufacturing facility that will serve the region’s maritime and energy industries.

Marking a joint investment of over US$400 million (SAR1.5 billion), the new facility, to be located in Ras Al-Khair under the Royal Commission of Jubail and Yanbu industrial area, aims to establish a high-value supply chain that boosts exports and economic competitiveness. Set to be operational in 2020, the plant will create 2,000 quality jobs in the Kingdom and catalyze the growth of Saudi small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

The MoU follows a preliminary partnership between Saudi Aramco and Cividale, a leading European producer in the steel and cast iron sector, to conduct feasibility studies for forging and casting manufacturing services in the Kingdom. GE has come on board to extend its expertise and investment in developing the world-class manufacturing plant through a joint venture between the three entities.

The Forging & Casting Manufacturing Facility complements plans by Saudi Aramco to develop several industrial projects in the Kingdom including a maritime project focused on building, maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) of offshore platforms, jack-ups, offshore service vessels and commercial tankers.

Saudi Aramco is also working with its partners to develop an onshore rig manufacturing facility for providing new build and MRO services to onshore rigs and systems; an engine manufacturing project for the manufacturing, maintenance and repair of diesel engines, manufacturing and repair of marine pumps; and an Energy Industrial City to accelerate manufacturing industries in the oil and gas sector.

The Forging & Casting Manufacturing Facility will serve all these projects in addition to providing the best-in-class services and technologies to downstream & other industries across the region and global markets. It will also support the ongoing emphasis of the government, under Saudi Vision 2030, to develop the mining sector of the Kingdom by creating a domestic source-market for various raw materials & supplies that go into the production line.

Abdallah I. Al-Saadan, Senior Vice President, Finance, Strategy & Development, Saudi Aramco, said: “The MoU reflects our ambition to create a robust supply chain that builds positive synergies in the oil and gas manufacturing sector. By building a domestic forging and casting production unit, Saudi and regional customers can achieve greater operational efficiencies in product procurement, repair and service support.”

Antonio Valduga, President of Cividale, added: “The feasibility assessment study underlines the strong potential for a world-class manufacturing facility for forging and casting services in the Kingdom. Developing a full-fledged facility through the joint partnership will position Saudi Arabia as a technology and services hub for specialized equipment and services.”

The collaboration is a strong example of the public-private partnerships that the government fosters under Saudi Vision 2030 to develop local manufacturing capabilities that add significant value to the economy.
