A new traveling-grate sinter plant with an annual production capacity of approximately 5.75 million tons is planned as part of a 13.2-million-ton-per-year integrated steel plant. The sintering operation will agglomerate iron-bearing materials for downstream steel production while incorporating waste heat recovery and off-gas recirculation technologies designed to improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions.
JSW Utkal Steel Limited has awarded SMS group a contract to supply the sinter plant for its new greenfield integrated steelworks in Odisha, India. SMS group, a metals industry equipment and technology supplier with its North American headquarters in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, will provide the design, engineering, and equipment package, including electrical systems and Level 1 and Level 2 automation. The sinter plant will have a strand area of 496 square meters (5,339 feet).
The plant will feature SMS group’s Emmission- and Energy-Optimized Sintering (EOS) technology, which recirculates off-gases and recovers waste heat. The system is designed to reduce SOx and CO2 emissions, lower solid fuel consumption, and improve plant efficiency.
The scope also includes Optimus Sinter, a digital solution designed to optimize fuel consumption, stabilize production, and provide real-time process information. The facility will be the third sinter plant of this scale within the JSW Group.
Commissioning is scheduled for May 2028.
