Accelerated Titanium Component Production Targets Naval Shipbuilding Bottlenecks

IperionX continues to advance domestic titanium manufacturing and thermal processing capabilities in a recent commitment to reduce long lead times for critical pump components used for naval shipbuilding. This addresses supply chain constraints that have slowed ship construction and maintenance. By shortening production timelines, the initiative supports improved fleet readiness while reinforcing domestic manufacturing capacity for mission-critical naval systems.

The effort is being demonstrated through a project with Carver Pump Company, a U.S.-based manufacturer of mission-critical pumps for naval applications. Carver Pump has placed an initial purchase order with IperionX for prototype titanium components. Leveraging domestically produced titanium metal powder and integrated in-house manufacturing, the project will focus on producing and testing cost-competitive replacements for traditionally cast pump components.

Titanium components are essential in naval pump systems due to their high strength-to-weight ratio, corrosion resistance, and ability to withstand extreme marine environments. However, traditionally cast titanium parts often face supply chain bottlenecks, with lead times exceeding 12 months, contributing to equipment and vessel downtime.

IperionX’s approach is designed to deliver step-change improvements in production efficiency. Each titanium component is expected to be produced in less than one week using the company’s low-cost domestically produced titanium metal powder and advanced manufacturing capabilities, significantly reducing reliance on conventional casting routes.

“Transitioning from lead times measured in years to timelines measured in days allows us to better support on-time naval shipbuilding and sustainment, directly enhancing fleet readiness,” said Anastasios (Taso) Arima, CEO of IperionX.

The purchase order covers the development of four prototype pump impellers, with manufacturing anticipated to be complete in May 2026. Successful completion of the prototyping and testing phase could lead to larger-scale production agreements supporting additional naval components.

IperionX To Receive $12.5 Million for Primary Titanium & Components

IperionX Limited will receive $12.5 million from the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) to accelerate the scale-up of a resilient, low-cost, and fully-integrated U.S. mineral-to-metal titanium supply chain. The project will include scaling up to over 1,000 metric tons per year at the Virgnia Titanium Manufacturing Campus.

The $12.5 million will be applied to purchase orders for long-lead, major capital equipment required for the scale-up. Major incremental capacity categories include titanium deoxygenation, sintering and powder metallurgy consolidation systems; near-net-shape component manufacturing and ancillary infrastructure upgrades.

“This new U.S. Government obligation allows IperionX to move immediately to secure long-lead capital equipment and lock in manufacturing slots with key suppliers. In response to the strategic need for increased production capacity of domestic primary titanium metal and manufactured titanium metal components, the project scope under the Industrial Base Analysis and Sustainment (IBAS) program has been revised to prioritize accelerated expansion of IperionX’s titanium metal and manufacturing production capacity at IperionX’s Virginia Titanium Manufacturing Campus.

This project is part of a previously announced $47.1 million award to strengthen the U.S. Defense Industrial Base by accelerating the scale-up of a resilient, low-cost, and fully-integrated U.S. mineral-to-metal titanium supply chain.

IperionX Granted $1.3 Million for U.S. Critical Titanium Components

A U.S. titanium metal and critical materials company has been granted $1.3 million for forged critical titanium components. IperionX will produce the titanium parts for U.S. Army ground vehicle programs at their Titanium Manufacturing Campus in Virginia.

The task order will be fulfilled using titanium production and advanced forging processes.

“Securing this first U.S. Army task order is a decisive step toward reshoring the nation’s titanium supply chain,” said Anastasios (Taso) Arima, IperionX CEO.

The project is the first of further task orders expected under the US $99 million SBIR Phase III contract, which enables any DoD and U.S. Government agency to support production capabilities by procuring titanium parts and materials directly from IperionX.

All technical specifications, performance requirements, and delivery schedules are governed under the U.S Controlled Unclassified Information Program (Executive Order 13556), ensuring protection of sensitive defense information.

IperionX Delivers First Titanium Furnace Production Run

IperionX, a U.S. titanium metal and critical materials company, recently delivered its first successful titanium furnace production run at the company’s Titanium Manufacturing Campus, based in Virginia. The furnace was installed in April 2024 with full run rate target capacity of at least 125 metric tons per year anticipated by the end of the year.

IperionX announced the commissioning of the Hydrogen Assisted Metallothermic Reduction (HAMRTM) furnace, noting that the titanium de-oxygenation production run represents a technological milestone for the company with a breakthrough +60x increase in titanium production capacity. The company’s titanium metal and critical minerals are processed for the consumer electronics, space, aerospace, defense, hydrogen, electric vehicles, and additive manufacturing industries.

“Over the last two years, we have successfully operated our pilot titanium production facility in Utah, producing high performance titanium products for customers and importantly – delivering first revenues for our company,” said Anastasios (Taso) Arima, CEO of IperionX. “Today, we demonstrated that our HAMR technology works at commercial scale. We successfully increased the furnace production capacity by ~60x times and produced high performance titanium that exceeds industry quality standards.”

The HAMR furnace is produced entirely from 100% scrap titanium (Ti-6Al-4V alloy, Grade 5 titanium), with a confirmed reduction in oxygen levels from 3.42% to below 0.07%, far exceeding the ASTM standard requirement of 0.2% for Grade 5 titanium. IperionX’s proprietary HAMR technologies offer a range of competitive advantages, including lower operating temperatures, reduced energy consumption, enhanced process efficiency, and accelerated production cycles.

IperionX Grows with New Virginia Titanium Facility

IperionX, a producer of high-quality titanium alloys, has commissioned a titanium production facility in Virginia.

Anastasios (Taso) Arima, CEO of IperionX, commented in a letter to the company’s shareholders: “Our Virginia titanium facility is designed to apply our HAMR [Hydrogen Assisted Metallothermic Reduction] and HSPT [Hydrogen Sintering & Phase Transformation] technologies to produce sustainable, high-quality and high strength titanium metal products at low cost.”

Full capacity is scheduled for 2026, with more than 1,000 metric tons of titanium produced per year. Using titanium powder produced on site, IperionX plans to employ unique forging technologies to produce titanium mill products and near net shape titanium products and to apply AM to produce 3D printed titanium products.

Arima also added, “We engaged with Lockheed Martin, GKN Aerospace, and the U.S. Army to replace traditional titanium mill products, in this case titanium plate, providing a new domestic and sustainable source to enhance their critical supply chains.” To aid these goals, Iperion is installing a large-scale, industrial furnace at their Virginia facility.
