Solar Atmospheres of Western PA

Two large H13 extrusion dies for two separate companies were vacuum heat treated in a high pressure gas quench vacuum furnace that fully hardened the dies in successive cycles.

Solar Atmospheres, using a furnace from Solar Manufacturing, provided two Ohio companies as-quenched dies with hardness of HRC 50-52 using nitrogen as the quench gas. The hollow die was 30” outer diameter x 15” inner diameter x 103” long and weighed 16,000 pounds. The solid die, belonging to a different customer, was 34” outer diameter x 64” long and weighed 14,000 pounds. Post-quench each component was triple air tempered resulting in a final hardness of HRC 46-48.

The 10-bar 600 HP high pressure vacuum furnace permits the company to obtain the desired cooling rates, commented Mike Johnson, director of sales at Solar Atmospheres.

Vacuum Furnaces: Finding and Managing Leaks

Best of the WebSource: Solar Atmospheres

Keep that furnace running! Obviously, a furnace leak can be quite counterproductive and make it troublesome or even impossible to keep it going. What can be done? Thankfully, there are several solutions. This best of the web article gives helpful measures in defining leaks, detecting leaks, solutions for effectively stopping a leak, and much more.

As you move through the post, you'll encounter a tutorial that starts with the basics. A furnace leak if defined with differences described between a normal leak and something such as an outgassing problem. Then, other information is presented with descriptions on the rate of the leak and possible locations for said leak. The article continues with methods for leak checking and wraps up with a check list of sorts for vacuum furnace users.

An excerpt:

Some operators or leak checking personnel will often use a stethoscope when checking for leaks, as its ability to transmit low-volume sounds and eliminate external noise is exceptional. Often in gross leaks or some smaller leaks, a standard paint brush and soapy wash solution is helpful. Brush the solution around suspected leak areas. Big leaks will blow big bubbles at the leak while smaller leaks will form very fine foam.

HTD Size-PR LogoAn electric vehicle manufacturer will move the heat treatment of their prototype gears in-house with a vacuum furnace. The company expects new product development to accelerate.

SECO/VACUUM, a SECO/WARWICK Group company, will deliver a CaseMaster Evolution (CMe) model with a working hot zone of 16”x16”x24” and a load capacity of 440 lb. The EV maker’s R&D lab will use furnace to low-pressure carburize and oil quench prototype gears. With this expansion, the manufacturer hopes to mitigate scheduling delays encountered when sending their prototype gears out to local commercial heat treatment shops.

“We have a strong partnership together," said Peter Zawistowski, managing director of SECO/VACUUM, "having commissioned a number of highly successful heat treat furnaces that provide a wide variety of processes in their plants across the world."

Heat Treater Expands with Vacuum Furnace

HTD Size-PR LogoA Swiss commercial heat treater ordered a vacuum furnace. A system will increase the production capacity of their nickel and silver brazing processes.

Maciej Korecki
Vice President of Business of the Vacuum Furnace Segment
SECO/WARWICK

The SECO/WARWICK vacuum furnace helps with hardening larger size parts and significantly increases the efficiency of the current hardening plant. The furnace increases production. In the version ordered by the Swiss, a large working zone (36"X36"X48") with the potential to adjust to an oversized load utilizes the advantages of a round heating chamber.

“[With a] cooling capacity of 15 bar, it is possible to process parts that require very fast cooling . . . . Vector also allows the system to perform more difficult brazing processes with either nickel or silver," explains Maciej Korecki, vice president of the Vacuum Furnace Segment, at SECO/WARWICK Group. "This is our second installation with this partner. Previously, we delivered a solution from the SECO/WARWICK furnace family of a similar size, in a non-pressurized version."

PA Heat Treater Plays a Role in NASA’s Artemis 1 Mission

HTD Size-PR LogoThe most recent launch of NASA’s Artemis 1 Mission included a large titanium manifold housing designed to rapidly propel astronauts away from the main rocket in case of a catastrophic explosion or any other unexpected event. This critical part was vacuum heat treated by Solar Atmospheres of Western PA.

On Wednesday, November 16, 2022, NASA’s unmanned Orion spacecraft launched successfully from Cape Canaveral at 1:47 am for a six-week test flight around the moon and back. This launch marks the first iteration of NASA’s moon-to-Mars Artemis 1 program.  For the 2014 Orion launch, NASA introduced the Launch Abort System (LAS). Once fired, the LAS will accelerate the astronauts away from the main rocket at forces up to 10 to 15 times normal gravity (“G’s”).

“Before the mighty Artemis rocket left Earth’s atmosphere with 8.8 million pounds of thrust, many of the components and support hardware had already experienced a lunar-like atmosphere here in western Pennsylvania,” commented Michael Johnson, sales director at Solar Atmospheres. “Many of the [6AL-4V] titanium and Inconel components were processed well below 1×10-5 Torr throughout thermal processing. Although our crew here on Earth were wearing nitrile gloves, it’s overwhelming to know we had a hand in heat treating these critical parts.”
