Nucor Contracts Quenching Unit, Caster for Kentucky Plate Mill Facility

A company that provides construction and mechanical engineering for the steel and nonferrous metals industry was recently selected for the supply of new equipment for a new plate mill facility, including a quenching unit, a single-strand caster, and other key elements of the production chain.

Nucor Corporation selected The SMS Group to design and produce the single-strand caster for ultra-wide and thick slabs for an annual capacity of 1.45 million tons (1.6 million short tons) at Nucor’s new plate mill facility in Brandenburg, Kentucky. The new casting machine is expected to be one of the largest casters worldwide.

Johnny Jacobs, vice president and general manager of Nucor Brandenburg

“SMS group and Nucor make a good team, and the caster will be essential to the success of our new plate mill facility,” said Johnny Jacobs, vice president and general manager of Nucor Brandenburg.

Incorporated in the project are several special technological features, including robotic applications on the casting platform and an HD mold with fiber optics and electromagnetic stirring, as well as a customized roller apron, a quenching unit, and a second cutting line.

Steel Manufacturer Expands South Carolina Bar Mill

A North American steel manufacturer recently made an investment with intent to expand its services at its South Carolina bar mill.

Nucor Corporation announced plans to add vacuum degassing to its engineered bar services at its bar mill in Darlington, South Carolina. Nucor hopes that by providing this service the mill will be better equipped to produce engineered bar products according to high-quality specifications in the industry. The vacuum degassing system is expected to begin operating in late 2020.

John Ferriola, Chairman, CEO, and President of Nucor Corporation

“This strategic investment complements our existing bar mills that primarily produce engineered bar products in Norfolk, Nebraska, Memphis, Tennessee, and Wallingford, Connecticut. It will position us to better serve our customers in the Southeastern United States and support the growing demand in the region for higher quality automotive and other specialty steel applications,” said John Ferriola, Chairman, CEO, and President of Nucor.

Nucor Steel South Carolina, the first steel mill Nucor built, now employs more than 450 teammates and will recognize its 50th anniversary this summer at the Darlington facility.

Producing steel by means of melting recycled scrap in an electric arc furnace (“EAF”), the mill influenced the way steel is now made in the United States. Today, Nucor estimates that approximately 70 percent of the steel made in this country is produced using EAFs.

Heat Treated Steel to be Produced at Ohio River Plate Mill

A steel manufacturer recently announced that it will build its new state of the art steel plate mill in Brandenburg, Kentucky, producing cut-to-length, coiled, heat-treated, and discrete plate.

Nucor Corporation will invest approximately $1.35 billion to build the mill along the Ohio River southwest of Louisville, which will be capable of producing 1.2 million tons per year of steel plate products and is expected to be fully operational in 2022, pending permit and regulatory approvals.

John Ferriola, Chairman, CEO & President of Nucor Corporation

“This strategic investment will enable us to build a clear market leadership position in the U.S. plate market. Kentucky is an excellent location for this mill, right in the center of America’s largest plate consuming region,” said John Ferriola, Chairman, CEO & President of Nucor Corporation. “Our acquisition of the Gallatin sheet mill in Ghent, Kentucky five years ago has been a tremendous success, and we are pleased to add a second mill in the state.”

The new plate mill will give Nucor the ability to produce 97 percent of the products demanded in the domestic plate market, including the specialty higher-margin products, including the discrete plate ranging from 60 to 160 inches wide, and in gauges from 3/16 of an inch to 14 inches. The selected location on the Ohio River will give Nucor logistical advantages in sourcing raw materials and serving customers throughout the Midwest. Nucor currently operates plate mills in North Carolina, Alabama, and Texas.

Nucor has two additional major investment projects underway at its Gallatin sheet mill in Kentucky. Nucor Steel Gallatin’s new galvanizing line will be operational during the second quarter of this year. And, its project to increase Gallatin’s hot-rolled coil capacity at expanded widths of up to 73 inches is expected to come online during 2021. The new plate mill and the projects at Nucor Steel Gallatin represent more than $2 billion in investments in the state of Kentucky.

Planned Steel Plate Mill to Include Heat Treat Processing

A North American steel and steel products manufacturer recently announced plans to build a state-of-the-art plate mill with heat treating included in its range of processing.

Leon Topalian, Nucor’s Executive Vice President of Beam and Plate products

Nucor Corporation, based in Charlotte, North Carolina, will invest $1.35 billion to build the mill, which will be based in the U.S. Midwest and produce cut-to-length, coiled, heat-treated, and discrete plate ranging from 60 to 160 inches wide, and in gauges from 3/16 of an inch to 14 inches in thickness, enabling Nucor to supply plate products that the Company does not currently offer.

“By building this state-of-the-art plate mill in the Midwest – the largest plate-consuming area in the United States – we will enhance our ability to serve our customers in the region while also furthering our goal of meeting all the steel needs of our customers around the country,” said Leon Topalian, Nucor’s Executive Vice President of Beam and Plate products. “We expect to select a site for the new mill early this year.  Our team is poised and ready to take the next step in advancing our position in steel plate products.”

Nucor’s Board of Directors has approved an investment of $1.35 billion to build the mill, which is expected to be fully operational in 2022 and will be capable of producing 1.2 million tons per year of steel plate products.

John Ferriola, Chairman, CEO & President of Nucor

“This investment is consistent with our drive to continue delivering sustainable, profitable growth and superior returns for shareholders,” said John Ferriola, Chairman, CEO & President of Nucor. “Together with the significant share repurchases completed in 2018, the Board’s decision to fund this high-return opportunity demonstrates our commitment to balanced capital allocation. We have a strong foundation to build upon as we advance our goal of leading in every market in which we compete.”

Nucor currently operates plate mills in North Carolina, Alabama, and Texas.

Galvanizing Line Plans Approved at Arkansas Sheet Mill

A North Carolina-based steel producer with operations primarily in the U.S. and Canada recently announced plans to expand heat treating capabilities at its Arkansas facility with a galvanizing line to support the company’s strategy to grow its automotive market share.

John Ferriola, chairman, CEO and president of Nucor

Nucor Corporation’s Board of Directors approved the construction plans at the sheet mill in Hickman of a galvanizing line at the company’s sheet mill with a target date for operations to begin in the first half of 20121. “At Nucor Steel Arkansas, we are building one of the most modern and efficient steel mills in the world,” said John Ferriola, chairman, CEO and president of Nucor. “This new galvanizing line, coupled with our new specialty cold mill complex, will allow us to efficiently produce products beyond the capability of any North American mill, and to have the flexibility to meet current and future demand for advanced high-strength steel products.”

The company is also evaluating building additional galvanizing lines at its other sheet mills as part of Nucor’s initiative to further expand its sheet business.

MaryEmily Slate, vice president and general manager, Nucor Steel Arkansas

“Building this galvanizing line will diversify the product mix at Nucor Steel Arkansas and allow us to better serve our automotive and value-added customers,” said MaryEmily Slate, vice president and general manager, Nucor Steel Arkansas. “We are positioning ourselves to become a major supplier to the growing galvanized market in the U.S.”

Nucor and its affiliates are manufacturers of steel products, with operating facilities primarily in the U.S. and Canada.  Products produced include: carbon and alloy steel — in bars, beams, sheet and plate; hollow structural section tubing; electrical conduit; steel piling; steel joists and joist girders; steel deck; fabricated concrete reinforcing steel; cold finished steel; steel fasteners; metal building systems; steel grating; and wire and wire mesh.
