    The Aluminum Federation, the trade body for the UK aluminum industry, has announced that appointment of a new chief executive. Mr. Tom Jones joins the organization from MMC Hardmetal UK, part of the Mitsubishi Materials group, where he was general manager. Tom has more than 35 years experience of working in manufacturing.

  • The Board of GKN Group plc has announced that Anne Stevens, currently Interim Chief Executive, has agreed to become the Group’s new Chief Executive with immediate effect. It was added that since her appointment, Stevens has taken leadership of an ongoing and wide-ranging internal review of all GKN’s businesses which has culminated in the development of a transformation plan to improve GKN’s performance.

  • Solar Atmospheres of California (SCA) announce the completion of its most recent facility expansion. Project expansion began taking shape in July 2016 with groundbreaking for a new 25,000 sq. ft. building. In preparation for the added growth, SCA has procured an additional four vacuum furnaces from sister company Solar Manufacturing (SMI) based in Souderton, Pennsylvania.

  • a heat treatment line from SMS group

    German metal processor Ilsenburger Grobblech GmbH ordered a new heat treatment line from SMS group. The line, project name "Adjustage II", will be consist of a shot-blaster, two roller hearth furnaces, the MultiFlex-Quench®, a plate leveler, a cleaning and priming line, and a water treatment plant and be capable of processing more than 300,000 tons of heavy plate annually. Commissioning is scheduled to take place early in 2020.

  • Wisconsin Oven Corporation shipped two electrically heated standard horizontal quench systems to an aluminum manufacturer, each designed to heat 1,000 pounds of aluminum to a 950°F operating temperature with qualified operating temperature ranges of 775°F and 1,075°F.

  • Grieve recently supplied a 1000°F (538°C) top-loading oven that will be used for curing composite materials in large molds at a manufacturer’s facility. Workspace dimensions measure 168 inches wide x 48 inches deep x 48 inches high, and 120 kW are installed in lncoloy -sheathed tubular heating elements. A 12,500-CFM, 10-HP recirculating blower provides horizontal airflow.

  • Graftech Advanced Graphite Materials in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, recently divested assets to refractory manufacturer Allied Mineral Products, Inc., located in Columbus, Ohio, and GTRefractory Solutions LLC in Wilmington, Delaware. Allied purchased the intellectual property rights to a collection of refractory cements and pastes, and GT Refractory Solutions acquired assets such as carbon and semi-graphite carbon brick, cement, pastes, porous carbons and graphite powders specialized for use in the steel, ferroalloy and iron industries.
  • Baker Furnace, Brea, Calif., the west coast division of the Thermal Product Solutions (TPS), moved to a new 40,000 sq-ft manufacturing space facility in 2017, which contributed to record shipments of custom and standard units in a variety of configurations. Among other projects, drop-bottom furnaces, crucible furnaces, car bottom furnaces, and batch ovens will be used for a variety of applications in the heat treating, foundry, composites, and automotive industries.

  • HBD Industries announced the expansion of its Precision Components Platform through the acquisition of True Position Technologies LLC (“True Position”), based in Valencia, California. A leading provider of complex machined components for flight control applications, True Position specializes in manufacturing high specification components that require multiple machining, testing and finishing processes all within extremely tight tolerances.

Accreditations, Certifications, Patents, and More

  • Conrad Kacsik Instrument Systems, Inc., has been reaccredited for ISO-IEC 17025:2005 by A2LA, a continuous A2LA accreditation since 2000.
  • Heat treaters Metallurgical Processing Inc., based in New Britain, Connecticut, has been awarded a 24-month Nadcap accreditation after being audited to 10 checklists.
  • Bodycote HIP now counts nine Nadcap-accredited sites with the recent award to the Surahammar, Sweden, location.

    Advanced Heat Treat Corp., which has held Nadcap accreditation since 2013, has been awarded Nadcap Merit status for Heat Treating (Ion Nitriding) at the MidPort location in Waterloo, Iowa. This is the highest accreditation period that can be earned. "We are proud to achieve Merit status for the third time in a row and be granted a 24-month accreditation. We hope our customers take pride in the fact they send their parts to AHT," stated John Ludeman, Director of Metallurgy and Quality Excellence.

  • Bodycote, the world’s largest provider of heat treatment and specialist thermal processing services, announced that its Surahammar, Sweden, Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP) location has earned its Nadcap accreditation. The Surahammar site has been producing Powdermet® Near Net Shape (NNS) and Selective Surface Net Shape (SSNS) components for many years, using its long experience of manufacturing complex, high integrity components from powder metal to serve markets such subsea, oil and gas, marine, nuclear, tool steel and automotive. Bodycote HIP now has nine Nadcap-accredited sites.
  • SAE International, Warrendale, Pa., announces that technical standard AMS2750 – Pyrometry, has received complete recognition by the U.S. Federal Drug Administration Center for Devices and Radiological Health, and it has been added to its list of recognized consensus standards database, List #47.

    • At the Executive Council meeting of the International Federation of Heat Treating and Surface Engineering (IFHTSE), D. Scott MacKenzie, PhD., was elected to serve as vice-president for a two-year term (January 1, 2018, to January 1, 2020). MacKenzie, a research scientist in metallurgy with Houghton International, Inc., in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, has been the ASM representative to IFHTSE since 2015.

    • Paulo has announced two additions to their Kansas City team. Mike Neumann, who brings 20 years of progressive experience in the heat treating industry, joins Paulo as the plant manager for the Kansas City location, which serves the automotive/heavy truck, aerospace, and railway industries and has a diverse offering of heat treating equipment. Kathy Neumann, who has extensive experience managing multi-plant safety programs for commercial heat treatment and traditional manufacturing companies, joins Paulo as the Director of Corporate Safety based at the Kansas City facility.
    • The Metal Powder Industries Federation (MPIF) has announced that Arthur (Bud) Jones, of Symmco, Inc., Sykesville, Pennsylvania, has been appointed president of the Center for Powder Metallurgy Technology. Jones succeeds Jeff Hamilton of American Axle & Manufacturing, Inc (AAM) – Powertrain, who had completed two terms.

      Solar Manufacturing Incorporated, an industry leader in manufacturing advanced industrial vacuum furnaces, is relocating its headquarters to Sellersville, Pennsylvania. The Sellersville Borough Council recently granted unanimous preliminary and final approval for the new building located on a combined 8.5 acres; the manufacturing area will occupy 40,000 square feet of the facility with an additional 17,500 square feet of office space. There is the option of an extra 22,500 square foot addition to the manufacturing building in the future. "I am thrilled to see this project moving forward for our new headquarters.  This new facility will provide us the space we need to grow and consolidate all our staff in one facility," said William Jones, who along with his wife, Myrtle Jones, owns Solar Manufacturing, Inc.  Gorski Engineering is scheduled to begin breaking ground for the new eight million dollar facility in the spring of 2018, with completion and occupancy later that fall.

    • Advanced Heat Treat Corp. (AHT) has purchased a gas nitride unit to expand its capacity for UltraGlow® Gas Nitriding and UltraOx® surface treatment solutions at its facility in Waterloo, Iowa. This new, large, state-of-the-art gas nitride/high temperature unit will also allow increased capacity of currently offered services including gas ferritic nitrocarburizing (FNC) and stress relief.
    • Aerospace heat treating manufacturer Delta H Technologies LLC of Columbus, Ohio, recently supplied a high-temperature heat treating furnace to a major aircraft MRO. The thermal equipment is capable of heat treating titanium, A286, PH stainless steel, and tool steels in an air or argon atmosphere. "This system complements our popular dual chamber aerospace heat treat (DCAHT serie) furnaces for aircraft aluminum," said Ellen Conway Merrill, vice president of Delta H. "Specifically, it provides a complete heat treating furnace system designed exclusively for aircraft MRO back shops, military, aircraft OEMs, and parts manufacturers."

Twin ovens developed by Ramada Aços and BMI

  • Ramada Aços has developed "Twin Ovens" in partnership with BMI Fours Industriels, with the first copies already operating at their facilities in Portugal. The furnaces work in an integrated energy management system with only one vacuum pump for both ovens. This solution allows a reduction of the consumption of electrical energy, as well as of the costs of maintenance. The designers plan to integrate a third furnace. The twin ovens have a capacity of over 1,750 lbs. each, increased by 14%, and a temperature of up to 1400ºF.

  • Ipsen USA recently shipped 15 furnaces to eight states in the United States, as well as Asia and Europe, to support customers in additive manufacturing, aerospace, commercial heat treating, medical and MIM industries. The shipments included: 1) nine TITAN® vacuum furnaces, including three TITAN DS (debinding and sintering) unites, two TITAN LT (low temperature) unitls and several H2- and H6-sized furnaces, all equipped with PdMetrics® predictive maintenance software; 2) three horizontal MetalMaster® vacuum furnaces, each with a work zone of 36" x 30" x 48" and load capacity of 2,000 lbs; 3) two horizontal TurboTreater® furnaces; and 4) one vacuum aluminum brazing furnace with a 1,500-pound load capacity and an all-metal, radiation-shielded hot zone for the aerospace industry.

  • Houston Heat Treat, a heat treat service provider located in the Houston, Texas, area, was granted the ABS Certificate of Heat Treatment Facility and Process Approval through the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), January 12, 2018. ABS Approved Quality Assurance Plan includes process and test requirements for ABS and non-ABS grades: carbon and low alloy steels. Processes include annealing, normalizing, quenching and tempering.
  • SIFCO Industries Inc’s Cleveland location became the first United States forging manufacturer to obtain NADCAP Metallic Materials Manufacturing certification. The scope of the audit undertaken to obtain this certification included forging equipment and processes to ensure consistency of manufacture. Other processes audited covered billet cutting, preparation, and heating, as well as post-forging operations. With mandates on the horizon from aerospace industry leaders, SIFCO proactively obtained the accreditation to ensure alignment with customers’ supplier quality requirements.

  • Constellium N.V. was awarded the 2017 Defense Manufacturing Technology (ManTech) Achievement Award in the category of Enhancing Military Capability for its contributions as part of the U.S. Army’s Affordable Protection from Objective Threats (APOT) ManTech program. This prestigious award recognizes individuals from government and the private sector whose ManTech projects result in system enhancements to improve military performance. Constellium was nominated for its efforts in development and maturation of the industrial scale processing of aluminum armor plate for forming single piece combat vehicle hulls.  A collaborative team consisting of BAE Systems Land & Armaments, ARL and Constellium developed, fabricated and demonstrated enhanced hull solutions applicable to tracked combat vehicles (military tanks).

  • Guill Tool & Engineering, a tool and die and precision machining company for the extrusion and defense industries based in West Warwick, Rhode Island, announced it has been certified by NQA for AS9100:2016 and ISO 9001:2015.  AS9100:2016 is the quality management standard specific to the aerospace industry.

  • German heat-treating systems manufacturer IVA Schmetz received a new order for five vacuum hardening furnaces from Taiwan to be delivered to a leading steel supplier with

  • Hirschvogel Automotive Group from Denklingen in Bavaria and Sacotec Components Oy in Finland, a company specializing in

    precision steel casting, each ordered cast link belt furnaces from Slovenian industrial furnace manufacturer Bosio, part of the Aichelin Group. A cast link belt furnace more than 22 meters in length with a performance of two tons of forged parts per hour went to Hirschvogel. Sacotec's order was for a shaft furnace for carburization of small parts.

  • An electrically heated, gas nitriding, pit furnace with an ammonia dissociator system for heat treating parts has been shipped to a technology manufacturer by Lindberg/MPH.  The pit furnace has a maximum temperature rating of 1250°F and work chamber dimensions of 28" diameter x 36" depth.
  • Shougang Jingtang United Iron & Steel, China, contracted Fives to design and supply a new galvanizing line furnace and inductors dedicated to the production of ultra high-strength steels at its Caofeidian facility. This is the sixth Fives furnace at this location.
  • Pirson Refractories installed the hearth refractory lining of Blast Furnace 2 at Arcelor Mittal Bremen.

  • Solar Atmospheres of Western PA expanded its mechanical testing capabilities to include tensile testing. In the summer of 2017, Solar tookdelivery of a new Tinius Olsen 300SL Universal testing machine, as well as a new Haas Model TL-1 CNC lathe in order to custom machine test specimens. Currently, many aerospace specifications demand at least one tensile test to be performed on each heat lot of material and/or for every furnace load of components being heat treated.   • High-performance tubing supplier Fine Tubes announced it received Nadcap accreditation for fluid distribution systems.

  • Ipsen was awarded U.S. Patent No. 9,719,149 B2 for the development of a new load transport mechanism that can move a load within a multi-station heat-treating system. Named inventors on the patent, Chief Engineer Craig Moller, Director of Engineering and Supply Chain Kevin Woerner, and Dr. W. Hendrik Grobler began developing this design five years ago.
  • Dana Incorporated was named Supplier of the Year by Blue Bird Corporation, a leading independent designer and manufacturer of school buses. Dana earned this top honor by introducing new products that align with Blue Bird's commitment to delivering innovative, market-leading technologies. Dana supplies Blue Bird with a complete range of drivetrain solutions including Spicer® medium- and heavy-duty single-drive axles, SPL® Series driveshafts, and Spicer end yokes.
  • Wisconsin Oven Corporation announced the company is pursuing new patents for equipment most commonly used in the aerospace industry, as well as a patent for “intelligent” oven technology, where the oven is able to monitor certain processes.

Kanfit Achieves Nadcap Accreditation for Composites, Renews Heat Treatment Certificate

Aerospace engineering company Kanfit Ltd announced recently that it has successfully completed its Nadcap audit for composites as well as a renewed certificate for heat treatment.

Successful accreditations include core processing (CP) and liquid resin processing (LRP). In addition, Kanfit received recertification for prepreg/adhesive bonding/resin film infusion and process control testing. Accreditations for LRP authorizes Kanfit’s resin transfer mold (RTM) process according to the requirements of Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI).

“We are extremely proud of our Composites and QA teams for bringing the company to the next level of Nadcap certification,” said Shai Fine, general manager of Kanfit. “Obtaining such a prestigious certification demonstrates our continued commitment to achieving our goal of providing top quality innovative solutions so that our customers continue to trust and depend on our products and services.”

Additionally, Kanfit reports that the new RTM process and specification for complex aerospace products that it created and developed has been adopted without changes by a prominent aerospace industry leader and has already been incorporated into its process specification library.

 

The company recently added 3D additive manufacturing to its autoclave manufacturing capabilities, and it is also developing other production technologies, including automated fiber placement (AFP) and robotic filament winding of closed frames.

Jason Schulze on AMS2750E: The Importance of Temperature Uniformity

Introduction

Temperature Uniformity Surveys (TUS) are an important part of testing any furnace to ensure consistent and uniform product results. In the next few posts, we’ll discuss not just the importance of temperature uniformity surveys, but also the requirements set forth by AMS2750E as well.

The Importance of a Uniform Furnace

Although a uniform furnace is important for all heat treating processes, I will utilize my experience in brazing to explain the importance of temperature uniformity within a furnace. Even if you may be unfamiliar with brazing, the logic should be straightforward.

Brazing depends on the eutectic reaction in a braze filler metal to bond two materials together. Temperature, atmosphere, and (when applied) vacuum greatly influence the reaction; with respect to this article, we will only deal with temperature uniformity as it applies to AMS2750E and Nadcap.

Brazing is inherently sensitive in the majority of aerospace applications. As a consequence, tight temperature tolerances are typically applied to brazing processes: anywhere from ±15°F to a super-tight ±5°F.

Here’s a practical example. We are developing a diffusion braze process in which two widgets are brazed together using Ni braze filler material. We load a single layer of widgets on a flat ceramic plate: one in each corner and one in the middle. This gives us five samples in total.  Once our development cycle is complete, we take the samples to the laboratory for examination of the required diffusion depth. In the lab, we notice that the samples located in the rear of the furnace (farthest from the door) have considerably less diffusion than the samples in the front (nearest the door) and the middle.

 

 

 

In a case like this, we would immediately look at the most recent TUS. If we notice that the uniformity requirement is ±25°F with actual TUS results being +20°F/-18°F (which does conform to a ±25°F), Temperature Uniformity Surveys should not be considered arbitrary. If tight temperature tolerances are required by your customer, it is safe to assume there is a good reason for it, and we should take seriously the need to keep our furnaces in top shape and capable of passing customer and/or AMS2750-required temperature uniformity surveys.

This first TUS article discussed the importance of temperature uniformity requirements as they are passed down to us from a purchase order (PO) holder to a supplier. In following articles, we will begin discussing definitions from AMS2750E and Nadcap to ensure we have a proper understanding of the terms as we implement requirements.

Aerospace Manufacturer Replaces Batch IQs with Integrated Vacuum System

A North American based aerospace manufacturer is replacing two integral quench batch furnaces with an integrated vacuum furnace heat treat system. In addition to running low pressure carburizing (LPC), the vacuum heat treat furnace is also capable of austenitizing, brazing, gas quenching, cryogenic treating and tempering. The SyncroTherm(r) system, provided by ALD Vacuum Systems, Inc. a wholly owned subsidiary of Advanced Metallurgical Group N.V., is believed to be the first of its type to be installed west of the Mississippi. This is the third unit being installed in the aerospace industry capable of performing processes compliant with Nadcap (National Aerospace and Defense Contractors Accreditation Program). The vacuum heat treat furnace will have five independently controlled hot zones each rated for load sizes of 24″ x 20″ x 9″ high and up to 110 lbs. The complete systems will be a “lights-out,” fully-automated system with individual part tracking and complete process history retention along with a consistent process cadence.

Bodycote Earns Highest Aerospace Accreditation

Bodycote is pleased to announce that its Chesterfield, UK hot isostatic pressing (HIP) location earned, for the second time, the highest level of Nadcap accreditation following the most recent Nadcap audit. The official approval was awarded on 2 February 2017.

As one of the original HIP facilities to achieve this standard, the site is now targeting to further extend its Merit status. This is building on a long history of supplying Hot Isostatic Pressing to the world’s aerospace prime manufacturers and their first tier suppliers.

Nadcap 18 Month Merit Status for Heat Treating Awarded to Solar Atmospheres

Solar Atmospheres announces that it has been awarded Nadcap 18-month Merit status for Heat Treating at the Souderton, PA facility.

Solar Atmospheres in Souderton has held Nadcap accreditation since 1995, maintaining merit status for the majority of that time. Having demonstrated their ongoing commitment to quality by satisfying customer requirements and industry specifications, the Nadcap Task Group has determined that Solar Atmospheres has again earned this special recognition.
