  • Edwards Vacuum, a leading manufacturer of vacuum and abatement solutions which offers heat treating, recently broke ground on a new 75,000 square foot Technology Innovation Center in Hillsboro, Oregon, to serve as the U.K.-based company's North American semiconductor headquarters.
  • A joint project between global steel producer The SMS Group and Arkansas Northeastern College will result in the opening of the Arkansas Steelmaking Academy (ASA), to be housed in the College's Center for Allied Technology, which is slated to open in August 2018 with ASA offerings to begin in 2019.
  • Mariya Trickett, who serves as senior vice president of Human Resources for Dana Corporation was recently honored as one of the Top 15 Business Women by the Ohio Diversity Council, recognizing outstanding women in leadership who are respected, successful leaders within their organization.

  • A Tier 1 automotive supplier recently purchased batch ovens custom engineered for aging aluminum structural components. Epcon Industrial Systems manufactures indirect gas-fired aluminum aging oven systems for the automotive and aerospace parts manufacturers and supplied the units.
  • Lindberg/MPH announced the recent shipment of an electrically heated rod overbend atmosphere box furnace to the aerospace industry. The box furnace has a maximum temperature rating of 2000°F and work chamber dimensions of 24" wide x 36" deep x 24ʺ high and will perform a heat treatment on parts within the work chamber under a reducing atmosphere generated from a nitrogen methanol panel.
  • A Midwest U.S. titanium manufacturer and fabricator recently received shipment of a large horizontal front loading vacuum furnace designed for processing titanium alloys for the aerospace, medical, and other industries. Fully compliant to aerospace specification AMS2750E, the furnace, supplied by Solar Manufacturing, includes a molybdenum shielded hot zone and heating elements, with a work zone size of 54" (1.37m) wide x 54" (1.37m) high x 144" (3.66m) deep and a weight capacity of 7,500 pounds (3,400 kg), and is capable of precise temperature control up to 2400° F (1316° C).
  • A special universal air flow oven from Grieve Corporation, the No. 1043, a 500°F (260°C), has been delivered to a customer to be used to post-cure hose lengths. Workspace dimensions measure 12” W x 30” D x 12” H.

Kudos Chatter

  • Hitchiner Manufacturing Co., Inc. was named the 2018 Powertrain Supplier of the Year at the FCA US LLC Supplier of the Year awards at MotorCity Casino Hotel in Detroit last month. Hitchiner was one of 16 companies recognized by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles at the annual awards for quality and excellence.
  • AK Steel Research and Innovation employees Yu-Wei Wang, Feng Zhu, Wei Wu, Panagiotis Makrygiannis, and Chao Pu were recognized with the Team Award by the Auto/Steel Partnership for their innovation and collaboration in developing pre-competitive solutions enabling steel execution in future vehicles. The award selections were based on project work completed in 2017 and were unanimously chosen by the Auto/Steel Partnership’s Joint Policy Council. Through the Auto/Steel Partnership, automakers and steel companies collaborate to drive improvements through projects focused on new steels, manufacturing processes and design challenges, including steel lightweighting solutions.
  • Advanced Heat Treat Corp. (AHT) announce that all four of its facilities (both Waterloo, Iowa locations, Monroe, MI, and Cullman, AL ) have recently gone through the International Automotive Task Force (IATF) 16949 automotive transition audit and have become IATF 16949 certified. IATF 16949 is the automotive Quality Management System developed by the “Big Three” automotive companies. It was recently updated from ISO/TS 16949 due to a change in the ISO 9001 Standard.

Equipment Chatter

  • Solar Atmospheres, Inc., in Souderton, PA, recently installed a 74″ diameter by 72″ deep horizontal internal quench vacuum furnace, designed by Solar Manufacturing, Inc., to quench with argon at 10-bar while utilizing a 600 horsepower motor running at 460 volts from a variable speed drive, and rear head moveable gas baffle doors. The goal of the massive quench system is to be able to quench larger batches of power generation castings by increasing the cooling rate and eliminating the supplemental use of helium and operating in 100% argon.
  • An electrically heated cyclone pit furnace was recently delivered by Lindberg/MPH to a steel heat treater to be used for a heat treating process on aircraft components. The maximum temperature rating for this electric pit furnace is 1250ºF. The work chamber has a 38″ diameter x 48″ depth and is constructed with an alloy liner backed with 7″ of block insulation.
  • Spanish supplier of aluminum sheets and coils Aludium has announced that the company will install a multi-chamber furnace to reduce metal costs and improve the sustainability of its operations. The new furnace will be installed in the Amorebieta cast house and will increase Aludium’s ability to melt lacquered scrap and is due to come onstream during 2019. The multi-chamber furnace selected is a Hertwich Ecomelt PS275, a proven technology and one of the largest shaft furnaces in the world.

  • PyroGenesis Canada Inc. has announced that it has received certification for the production of metal powders under a quality management system which complies with the requirements of ISO 9001:2008. This certification is an amendment to the company’s existing ISO certification, pertains specifically to metal powder production, and was received under the auspices of a major independent risk and standards company, SAI Global.
  • Family-owned global manufacturer of plastic processing machines Arburg, based in Loßburg, Germany, has recently been presented three certifications: LQW, ISO, and IHK recognition. The LQW certificate was presented to the machine manufacturer in January after the successful completion of the “Learner-oriented Quality Certification in Continuing Education and Training”. The company received the approval of DIN ISO 29990:2010 “Quality Management Systems for Learning services for Non-formal Education and Training” inspection in February. In late 2017, the manufacturer was recognized with the “1A Excellent Training Company” award presented by the Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) – Northern Black Forest region.
  • Countyline Tool, a Komet Service Partner based in East Peoria, Illinois, has attained ISO 9001:2015 certification. All Komet partners are currently working to obtain the ISO 9001:2015 certification, and Countyline Tool is the eighth partner to have completed the certification.

  • Super Systems Europe recently announced that Rob Wilcox has joined the sales and engineering team, where he will also operate as a general consultant to help commercial and captive heat treaters improve the quality and efficiency of the entire operation, covering the UK and Ireland.
  • Brian Robbins, CEO of MidWest Materials, has been named Steel Man of the Year by the Association of Steel Distributors. "I am honored to be chosen for this prestigious award. My family has been associated with the steel industry for more than 65 years, and it is humbling to follow in the footsteps of my grandfather, Joseph Koppelman, founder of MidWest Materials, who was one of the earliest members of the ASD and served as its president 50 years ago," said Robbins, who served as president of ASD from March 2014 to April 2016. He led the association’s effort to rebuild the steel manufacturing sector by encouraging young talent to join the industry.
  • Ryan Kelly recently rejoined the team at Advanced Heat Treat Corp. (AHT) where he will be leading all quality initiatives as a senior quality specialist.
  • Senior Vice President Douglas Matthews has assumed day-to-day operations of Pittsburgh-based U.S. Steel’s Tubular division. He replaces David J. Rintoul, who retired to become the president and CEO of GrafTech, a graphite company that supplies technology to the steel industry.

  • Dana Incorporated announced the election of two more members to its board of directors: Michael J. Mack, who recently retired from Deere & Co., where he had served as chief financial officer; president of the company's Worldwide Construction & Forestry Division; and most recently as group president of John Deere Financial Services, Global Human Resources, and Public Affairs; and Diarmuid B. O'Connell, who spent the last 11 years at Tesla, most recently as vice president of business development.
  • International Thermal Systems (ITS) recently announced Tom Stricker as the new president. Stricker joined ITS in 2015 as the general manager of the Metal Packaging and Parts Washer product groups and brings more than 20 years of professional experience to his new role.
  • Herbert J. “Hawk” Carlisle has been elected to the Allegheny Technologies Incorporated (ATI) board of directors. General Carlisle is president and CEO of the National Defense Industrial Association (NDIA) and is a retired four-star general from the United States Air Force (USAF).

Equipment Transactions

  • A supplier of the battery industry received shipment of a nine tube gas-fired immersion tube lead melting and holding furnace from Lindberg/MPH, to be used in the production of lead plates for automotive batteries. The furnace has over 28,000 square inches of heat transfer area for efficient heating of the metal without super heating and the resulting metal losses. In addition, Lindberg/MPH announced the shipment of a three-zone tube furnace to an American University with a footprint which makes it ideal for research facilities with limited space. The maximum temperature rating for this tube furnace is 2012°F.
  • Ipsen recently designed and built a vertical, high-pressure quenching furnace, complete with twin cooling systems and a work volume of 350 cubic feet. During the testing phase, the furnace quenched with 1,000 horsepower (.75 megawatts) – a remarkable achievement that began as an idea just months prior.
  • An aviation engine repair services facility located in the western region of the United States recently received shipment of two vacuum furnaces from Solar Manufacturing. The customer witnessed full testing at Solar Manufacturing and approved shipment in late 2017. Both new furnaces are tailored specifically to fit the needs of aerospace engine component repair processing to the aerospace specification AMS2750E and incorporate the new SolarVac® 5000 supervisory control and data acquisition system (SCADA). The system provides gas quench rate control utilizing a variable frequency drive and precise temperature control from ambient to 2400° F (1316° C) utilizing digital power trimming technology.
  • An aluminum manufacturer received shipment of two electrically heated standard horizontal aluminum quench systems from Wisconsin Oven Corp., of East Troy, Wisconsin. The systems guarantee temperature uniformity of ±10°F at 775°F and 1075°F, ensuring that the furnaces meet AMS 2750E, Class 2 furnaces and Instrumentation Type C requirements. Each system is designed to heat 1000 pounds of aluminum to a 950°F operating temperature.

Accreditations, Certifications, Patents, and More

  • MedAccred has recognized Solar Atmospheres of Western PA for its commitment to continual improvement in medical device heat treat and brazing quality. In receiving the prestigious MedAccred Heat Treating accreditation, Solar Atmospheres has become only the eighth plant internationally and the fifth plant domestically to receive this certification.
  • H.C. Starck recently announced that it has received the certification for processing of “conflict-free” tantalum raw materials the seventh year in a row. The audit included the H.C. Starck Tantalum and Niobium GmbH subsidiary and the H.C. Starck Smelting GmbH & Co. KG associated company. This means all subsidiaries that process tantalum at the Goslar, Mito, Tokyo, Map Ta Phut, and Laufenburg locations remain certified. The audit was performed by the independent company SGS, acting on behalf of the Responsible Business Alliance (RBA, formerly Electronics Industry Citizenship Coalition EICC) and the Responsible Minerals Assurance Process (RMAP formerly Conflict-Free Smelter Program) as part of the Responsible Minerals Initiative (RMI, formerly CFSI).

  • Bloom Engineering recently welcomed Mr. Kip Bailey as a full-time Field Service Technician. Mr. Bailey brings experience in both combustion and specific process knowledge via his work as a furnace builder.
  • Sue Harrod has been appointed chief operating officer (COO) of Diablo Furnaces LLC, a Machesney Park, Illinois-based, company that manufactures, refurbishes, upgrades, services, and supplies parts for atmospheric heat-treating equipment. Harrod has worked in the thermal-processing industry for 25 years in supporting and leading roles at BeaverMatic, Ipsen, and Diablo Furnaces.

  • German heat-treating systems manufacturer IVA Schmetz received a new order for five vacuum hardening furnaces from Taiwan to be delivered to a leading steel supplier with

IVA Schmetz is supported by the local partner Pan Folks, who is also responsible for commissioning the furnaces. The order is part of a larger investment project which also includes seven vacuum annealing furnaces delivered by IVA Schemtz's sister company BMI in France.

  • Hirschvogel Automotive Group from Denklingen in Bavaria and Sacotec Components Oy in Finland, a company specializing in

    precision steel casting, each ordered cast link belt furnaces from Slovenian industrial furnace manufacturer Bosio, part of the Aichelin Group. A cast link belt furnace more than 22 meters in length with a performance of two tons of forged parts per hour went to Hirschvogel. Sacotec's order was for a shaft furnace for carburization of small parts.

  • An electrically heated, gas nitriding, pit furnace with an ammonia dissociator system for heat treating parts has been shipped to a technology manufacturer by Lindberg/MPH.  The pit furnace has a maximum temperature rating of 1250°F and work chamber dimensions of 28" diameter x 36" depth.
  • Shougang Jingtang United Iron & Steel, China, contracted Fives to design and supply a new galvanizing line furnace and inductors dedicated to the production of ultra high-strength steels at its Caofeidian facility. This is the sixth Fives furnace at this location.
  • Pirson Refractories installed the hearth refractory lining of Blast Furnace 2 at Arcelor Mittal Bremen.

Solar Atmospheres Western PA adds tensile testing

  • Solar Atmospheres of Western PA expanded its mechanical testing capabilities to include tensile testing. In the summer of 2017, Solar tookdelivery of a new Tinius Olsen 300SL Universal testing machine, as well as a new Haas Model TL-1 CNC lathe in order to custom machine test specimens. Currently, many aerospace specifications demand at least one tensile test to be performed on each heat lot of material and/or for every furnace load of components being heat treated.   • Heat Treatment Australia (HTA Group) and its corporate and strategy director Karen Stanton were recently featured in a news article, "Risks Paying Off in a New Age of Manufacturing", published in Australia's Courier-Mail, drawing attention to the firm's investment "in research and development and machinery to position itself to become part of the multinational Joint Strike Fighter program" as part of a nationwide growth in manufacturing.
  • High-performance tubing supplier Fine Tubes announced it received Nadcap accreditation for fluid distribution systems.

  • Ipsen was awarded U.S. Patent No. 9,719,149 B2 for the development of a new load transport mechanism that can move a load within a multi-station heat-treating system. Named inventors on the patent, Chief Engineer Craig Moller, Director of Engineering and Supply Chain Kevin Woerner, and Dr. W. Hendrik Grobler began developing this design five years ago.
  • Dana Incorporated was named Supplier of the Year by Blue Bird Corporation, a leading independent designer and manufacturer of school buses. Dana earned this top honor by introducing new products that align with Blue Bird's commitment to delivering innovative, market-leading technologies. Dana supplies Blue Bird with a complete range of drivetrain solutions including Spicer® medium- and heavy-duty single-drive axles, SPL® Series driveshafts, and Spicer end yokes.
  • Wisconsin Oven Corporation announced the company is pursuing new patents for equipment most commonly used in the aerospace industry, as well as a patent for “intelligent” oven technology, where the oven is able to monitor certain processes.

Heat Treat Equipment Purchases — Recent Activity

Multiple transactions involving the contracting, purchasing, selling, shipment and delivery of heat treat systems, equipment, or services have taken place over the past several weeks; here are some we hope will be of interest to Heat Treat Today readers.

  1. (Automotive Heat Treat News) A Chinese steel manufacturer of parts for the automotive industry, Baosteel's Zhanjiang integrated steel production complex, opened with Fives' Stein Digiflex furnaces for a 700kt/yr continuous annealing line and a 270kt/yr galvanizing line for a 1,550mm wide cold rolling mill.
  2. (Manufacturing Heat Treat News) Spanish heavy industry manufacturer Forjas Iraeta Heavy Industry, S.L. (GRI Group), contracted a 30 ton/hour walking beam furnace to add to an existing flange production mill. German metals SMS Group launched the project, which is to install furnace technology for proper and optimal reheating of a wide range of products: the charge will include blooms from 200 to 500 millimeters square and round blooms from 300 to 700 millimeters in diameter, in lengths between three and five meters.

  3. (Manufacturing Heat Treat News) In addition, SMS Group recently received a contract for a continuous hot-dip galvanizing line for high-strength steel grades to be supplied to Shougang Jingtang United Iron & Steel Co., Ltd., China. This is the sixth strip processing line to be installed in this works on Caofeidian Island, a man-made island offshore the Chinese province of Hebei. The line will produce 360,000 tons of hot-dip galvanized steel strip, including high-strength grades with tensile strengths of up to 1,350 MPa.
  4. (Manufacturing Heat Treat News) Two electrically heated Pacemaker integral quench furnaces have been shipped by Lindberg/MPH, based in Riverside, Michigan, to be used for carburizing and hardening applications.
  5. (Manufacturing Heat Treat News) Lindberg/MPH has also shipped to an electronic components manufacturer a 1200°F single-zone tube furnace to be used for annealing, ashing, carbon firing, ceramic firing, hardening, sintering, solution treating, stress relieving, and other heat treating applications.
  6. (Aerospace Heat Treat News) Lindberg/MPH announced the shipment of an electrically heated gas nitriding pit furnace for a leading aerospace supplier. The pit furnace system performs a two-stage nitriding process to achieve high surface hardness on A11 and H13 steel parts.
  7. (Manufacturing Heat Treat News) An electrically heated, steam atmosphere, pit furnace has been shipped by Lindberg/MPH to an engineered components manufacturer. The equipment will be used with a steam generator for steam treating tools steels.
  8. (Automotive Heat Treat News) An automotive supplier is the recipient of a fourth Lindberg/MPH transaction, a multi-chamber, electrically heated hot stamping furnace to be used to preheat steel blanks for hot stamping structural automotive components. 
  9. (Automotive Heat Treat News) Can-Eng Furnaces recently completed commissioning an electrically heated furnace line addition to a leading bearing manufacturer’s existing production line. Responsible for producing planet shafts and pump vane products, the line now features a compact 1,000 lb/hr atmosphere temper and soluble oil system for rust prevention.
  10. (Automotive Heat Treat News) A Montreal-based manufacturer of advanced plasma processes received an order for the sale of a second DROSRITE™ Furnace System to a North American automobile parts manufacturer. PyroGenesis Canada Inc. developed the patented salt-free, cost-effective, sustainable process for maximizing metal recovery from dross, a waste generated in the metallurgical industry.

University Purchases 1500°C Box Furnace

A 1500°C box furnace was recently shipped to a university, designed for testing, research and development, and laboratory applications and with capability for ease of mobility within the facility.

The heavy-duty furnace, supplied by Lindberg/MPH, is suited for multiple applications such as annealing, ashing, carbon firing, ceramic firing, hardening, sintering, solution treating, and stress relieving, and has locking casters to allow it to be moved to different locations.

Lindberg/MPH ships immersion lead melting furnace

Among the many transactions involving the contracting, purchasing, selling, shipment and delivery of heat treat systems, equipment or services over the past few weeks, we thought the following would be of interest to our readers.

  1. (Manufacturing Heat Treat News) A commercial heat treater recently purchased a TITAN H6 to expand production capacity and meet customer demands. Ipsen USA supplied the vacuum furnace to Rockford Heat Treaters (RHT) where it will join a complete atmosphere line of seven integral quench furnaces with ancillary washers and tempers, more than a dozen draw furnaces, a VFS(r) vacuum furnace and four other vacuum furnaces.
  2. (Automotive Heat Treat News) A gas-fired immersion lead melting furnace has been delivered to expand the operations of a manufacturer in the battery industry. The melting and holding furnace will be used in the production of lead plates for automotive batteries. Lindberg/MPH was the supplier of the furnace. In addition, Lindberg/MPH announced the shipment of a Temperite box furnace and a Treet-All box furnace to the maritime industry. The box furnaces are designed to be used in a stacked configuration or stand alone.
  3. (Manufacturing Heat Treat News) A compact remote transformer and low profile heating inductor were recently shipped to a foresty products manufacturer. Ajax TOCCO Magnethermic®, a subsidiary of ParkOhio Holdings Corp.®, supplied the equipment to be used for preheating prior to GMAW. The customer had a need to be able to he

    at a rotating weldment with limited space between welds. Existing weld preheat inductors that roll on top of the weldment would not fit between the weldments, forcing the customer to rely on combustion heating technology (torches). In this kit, the heating inductor floats above the weldment without making contact.

  4. (Manufacturing Heat Treat News) Two natural gas-fired batch ovens have been delivered to the foundry industry. The batch ovens, supplied by Wisconsin Oven Corporation, will be used for drying sand cores used in the casting process of a variety of parts. The sand core dryers have the capability to dry water and resin from 6,000 pounds of sand cores and a 600-pound steel load car from 70°F to 450°F within 2 hours.

Lindberg/MPH Ships Tube Furnaces

Lindberg/MPH announced the shipment of four (4) heavy duty tube furnaces to a leading manufacturer of thermocouples for use in a laboratory to heat treat parts inside tubes. The tube furnaces are easy to operate, utilize an energy efficient design, and provide rapid heat-up rates along with fast cooling and response time. They offer superior radial and linear temperature uniformity and require little or no maintenance.

The four (4) heavy duty tube furnaces have a maximum temperature rating of 1500°C and work chamber of 3” in diameter and 34” in length with removable side panels. Double-end silicon carbide heating elements are mounted above and below the furnace chamber for uniform heating. The chambers are constructed of high-temperature graded insulation. The insulating vestibules at the ends of the heated chambers keep the heat loss to a minimum ensuring even greater temperature uniformity. These tube furnaces provide easy element installation, electrical hook-up, and adjustment.
