A melting and holding furnace with a preheat hearth and a maximum temperature rating of 1,450°F (788°C) has been shipped to a manufacturer to increase capacity for processing aluminum parts.
Lindberg/MPH announced the shipment of a gas-fired reverberatory aluminum melting and holding furnace with a total holding capacity of 85,000 lbs based on 155 lbs per cubic ft. of molten aluminum and a melt rate of 10,000 pounds per hour. A full width vertically rising air operated door provides access to load the preheat hearth and a full width cleanout door at the rear allows for unloading.

This melting furnace is designed with an elevated base and bottom mounted magnetic stirring mechanism. An air pressure pump well for dispensing molten aluminum provides the operator with greater ease of use and allows the unit to stand idle over long periods of time such as weekends without having a large temperature differential between the pumper and the furnace.
“This aluminum melting furnace design provides maximum melting efficiency and large capacity. The customer supplied magnetic stirring mechanism helps reduce damaging oxide growth,” said Kelley Shreve, general manager at Lindberg/MPH.

An aerospace company has purchased a rod overbend box furnace to heat treat parts under an inert atmosphere. The heat treating furnace has a maximum temperature rating of 2,000°F and a load capacity of 6,000 lbs.
The box furnace, which was manufactured and shipped by Michigan-based Lindberg/MPH, has an automated load transfer table and is designed to heat treat parts in a nitrogen atmosphere. A nitrogen gas flow meter controls the atmospheric conditions.
The box furnace includes an automated load transfer table. Under the table, five (5) fans with a variable-frequency drive provide accelerated cooling. The load table utilizes a pusher/puller mechanism to move parts trays in and out of the furnace.
The furnace’s radiant heating system uses heavy-gauge alloy rod over-bend heating elements mounted along the side walls and the floor. Two (2) Watlow F4T controllers control and record the furnace temperature, which allows for seven (7) zones of heating. The box furnace also meets Class 3 temperature uniformity of ±15°F at 1,000°F – 1,800°F.

The following is based on roller hearth furnaces operating at or above 1400°F.
Annealing furnace features depend upon the material being processed and the metallurgical process being carried out. They can be provided with a wide variety of features for preheating, annealing, slow cooling, oxidizing or bluing and accelerated cooling.
Preheating features include direct or indirect heating applications, under air or controlled atmospheres. Preheating in some cases requires features for burn-off of residual blanking fluids prior to entry into the critical anneal chamber and as such, the off -gas must be appropriately addressed.
Annealing can be a direct or indirect heating application using natural gas, blended hydrogen/natural gas, and electrical energy sources. Process protective atmospheres include N2, Exothermic gas, Endothermic gas, N2 + H2, and H2. In some cases, process atmospheres must be carefully controlled and monitored to very low O2 PPM levels to ensure correct oxides are formed or, alternatively, a bright oxide-free finish is achieved, something very critical when annealing electrical steels for transformer core and motor annealing. Today we see a rise in the use of roller hearth furnaces for the manufacture of transformer core and motor cores, processing electrical steels and amorphous metals. This is largely a result of the electrification of the world.
Post-annealing cooling and bluing are paramount to the process success. In most cases, cooling and soaking stages are provided through the integration of direct and indirect cooling methods that include air, water, and externally chilled atmospheres that can be directly injected into the furnace system and recirculated.

Roller hearth furnaces are the work horse of the industry; they are used for a variety of other heat treating applications. For example, roller hearth furnaces can also be used for low temperature curing, tempering, and aluminum heat treating applications. These lower-temperature roller hearth furnaces do not operate above 1400°F and are built with different fabrication and refractory standards. Of course, additional high temperature applications include neutral hardening, case hardening, carbonitriding, isothermal, and spheroidizing annealing and normalizing.

This is often used for products inside electrical equipment such as electric motors or transformers where grain growth and residual stresses may affect the magnetic properties of the material. The most cost-effective process for this heat treatment is through a continuous atmosphere with a reducing atmosphere (often provided by a lean Exothermic gas atmosphere). For this process, the atmosphere requires a specific range of hydrogen alongside a controlled heating and cooling recipe with multiple stages.

As an example, chain and sprocket driven rollers just only be locked down on the drive side of the furnace so that thermal expansion allows them to grow on the idle side. Otherwise, the sprockets may walk out of alignment and cause a multitude of long and short-term issues such as rollers seizing and warping, drive faults, load crashes, and timing issues between multiple driven segments.

The workspace dimensions of the furnace are 24” x 36” x 18” and is designed for air atmosphere applications. The box furnace features an automated actuator to flip the push/pull mechanism on the load table to eliminate the operators need to manually flip it into push position. This option allows the push/pull head to retract from the furnace once the work grid is in the furnace chamber and increases operator safety by removing the need to reach into the hot furnace with a hook to flip the push/pull head.

A tooling manufacturer is expanding with an electrically heated, steam atmosphere pit furnace for steam treating parts. The steam treating process creates a uniform blue-black finish on the surface of parts, which improves wear and corrosion resistance.
Lindberg/MPH, a manufacturer based in Michigan, shipped the steam treating furnace which has a maximum temperature rating of 1,250°F and work chamber dimensions of 22" diameter x 36" depth. The pit furnace is insulated with vacuum formed ceramic fiber modules that allow for rapid heat up rates and fast control response. A circulation fan distributes heat evenly throughout the chamber which ensures rapid and uniform heat transfer throughout the product load.
“This steam atmosphere pit furnace has the sufficient capacity to process a workload of 1,200 lbs," comments Kelley Shreve, application engineering manager at Lindberg/MPH. "This furnace was also designed with a custom powered lid for ease of loading."

A manufacturer is expanding their heat treat capacities with a new box furnace, designed for air atmosphere applications, from a North American furnace provider.
Lindberg/MPH's heat treat furnace has a maximum temperature rating of 1,250°F and a load capacity of 6,000 lbs and is designed to accept fixtures that are 48" wide by 84" deep by 48" high. A full-width roller hearth is located across the furnace chamber floor for manual loading and load support. Temperature is controlled by a Honeywell DC2500 Series controller with an adjustable alarm set-point and latching output relay; the controller disconnects the power to the heating elements and sounds an audible alarm in an event that temperature exceeds desired set-point.
“The high velocity forced heating system circulates heat evenly within the furnace chamber," commented Bill St. Thomas, business development manager at Lindberg/MPH. "[This] assures rapid and uniform heat transfer throughout the workload.”

A Michigan-based furnace supplier will ship a gas-fired pit furnace to a manufacturer. The furnace, which has a maximum operating temperature of 1400°F and a load capacity of 2,750 lbs., is made with an outer shell of industrial steel and an alloy liner backed with insulating brick.
Lindberg/MPH announced the order of the new furnace, which is the second identical unit for the manufacturer. Upon delivery, the pit furnace will include type K thermocouples (pre-wired), a manual lid lift, a lid limit switch, and a control panel with temperature and excess temperature control.
