  • Roger Smith has recently been appointed Technical Manager at Plibrico Company, LLC.  Smith will be responsible for development of innovative refractory formulas, oversee product quality, and assist in identifying the best materials for refractory construction projects.
  • William “Bill” Cowell has been promoted to the position of Vice President of Operations at Advanced Heat Treat Corp. (AHT). Cowell, who has been at AHT since 1999, will oversee operations for all AHT  facilities.
  • Wirco has announced the promotion of Aaron Fisher to Vice President of our Fabrication Division. Aaron has been with Wirco for 19 years. In addition, Wirco welcomes Marco Möser as the Vice President of our Foundry Division.
  • Thomas G. Gasbarre has stepped down as Chief Executive Officer of Gasbarre Products, Inc, a position he has held since his father George Gasbarre, the founder of the company, retired in 1990. Gasbarre also announced that Tom’s son, Alex Gasbarre, has been appointed Chief Executive Officer and is now leading the development and execution of the company’s short- and long-term strategies. Heath Jenkins has been promoted and will succeed Alex as President, Press & Automation, and Manufacturing Technologies.
  • John C Plant has been appointed to serve as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer at Arconic Inc. The Board has also appointed Elmer L. Doty, a current Director, to serve as Chief Operating Officer, and Arthur D. Collins, Jr., a current Director, to serve as Lead Director. These appointments are effective immediately.
  • Xerox, based in Norwalk, Connecticut, has acquired metal additive manufacturing company Vader Systems, which will enable it to offer its customers access to low-cost metal additive manufacturing with a greater variety of metals. Based in Buffalo, New York, Vader Systems is a developer of liquid metal additive manufacturing technology.
  • Several convection ovens were supplied to a manufacturer of small medical parts in the southern U.S. by Lucifer Furnaces. Model 42-B18 has a working chamber size of 9”H x 9”W x 18”L and heats to 1200°F.
  • A floor-standing furnace has been shipped by L&L Special Furnace Co., Inc. to a worldwide leader of high tech ceramics and associated components located in the Northeastern United States. The furnace will be used for glass components along with fiber optics and research and development. It will also be used to fill in on various thermal projects and development.
  • A Treet-All™ Box Furnace has been shipped to a Japan-based global battery manufacturing company by Lindberg/MPH.  The maximum temperature rating of this light industrial box furnace is 2050°F and has work chamber dimensions of 18” wide x 36” deep x 18” high. The Treet-All™ Light Industrial Box Furnace is suited for multiple applications, including annealing, ashing, austempering, brazing, preheating, solution treating, stress relieving, and normalizing.
  • A supplier of the aerospace industry received shipment of a Electrically Heated Horizontal Quench Solution Treat System from Wisconsin Oven Corporation. The Horizontal Quench Solution Treat System has a maximum oven operating temperature of 1,200° F and work zone dimensions of 5’4″ wide x 5’6″ long x 5’4″ high (above the rollers).
  • Chromalox, a thermal technology provider, recently contracted with Sierra Monitor Corporation  to enable cloud system connectivity on their Heat Trace solution.
  • A cabinet oven is being used to finish batch loads of metal parts at a customer’s facility. The No. 828 is a 500°F (260°C) cabinet oven from Grieve Corporation.
  • A recycling and melting group has ordered for installation a Twin-Chamber Melting Furnace TCF® from Tenova LOI Thermprocess. Italy-based Fonderie Pandolfo specializes in processing of aluminum, mainly for extrusions. The casted billets are mainly extruded in the extrusion shops of the main European extruders.

  • Buehler, an ITW Company, and ASM International are celebrating 75 of continuous partnership in 2019. Buehler has continuously supported of the ASM World Training Center in Novelty, Ohio, through its innovations for metallography and hardness testing, solutions for the newest materials and participation in ASM International activities.
  • Pennsylvania-based Onex Inc recently completed a forge furnace refractory reline in one week.

Industrial Gas Supplier Expands Through Building, Acquisition

A leading U.S. supplier of industrial, medical and specialty gases has recently made moves to increase the company’s bulk gas production and distribution through building and expansion projects and an acquisition of a distributor of industrial gases and welding supplies.

Airgas, an Air Liquide company, announced the plans to build two new air separation units (ASUs) that increase bulk gas production in the Midwest and Northeast. The two new ASUs, along with previously announced production facilities under construction in North Carolina (on-stream late 2019) and Southern California, will produce oxygen, nitrogen, and argon for use in customer applications that include heat treating, metal fabrication, and combustion enhancement.

In addition, Air Liquide announced that Airgas has signed a definitive agreement to acquire TA Corporate Holdings, Inc. (“Tech Air), a large independent distributor of industrial gases and welding supplies. Founded in 1935, Tech Air is a major distributor of industrial, medical and specialty packaged gases, welding equipment, and supplies. Tech Air is owned by CI Capital Partners, a New York-based private equity firm, and Tech Air management.

“With the construction of these two new ASUs, Airgas will deliver on our Air Liquide integration strategy to grow our independent production of bulk gases, to gain efficiencies in our dynamic supply chain, and to deliver product supply reliability to our customers,” said Pascal Vinet, Chief Executive Officer of Airgas, Inc. and Air Liquide Executive Committee Member.

Regarding the Tech Air acquisition, Vinet said, “Growth through acquisition has been a key component of Airgas’ business model and remains a core part of our long term strategy. We look forward to welcoming the Tech Air team to Airgas, and integrating their complementary capabilities and resources to enhance service for our customers.”

Wilkosz is also a principal in Laser Hard, Inc., specializing in robotic laser heat treating and cladding. He is also a Heat Treat Today 2018 40 Under 40 recipient.
  • Geoffrey Somary has been appointed to CEO of Ipsen Group worldwide, taking over the position after former CEO Thorsten Kruger moved to the Advisory Board of the company.
  • Jake Verdoux has recently been promoted to the position of Manufacturing Manager for Plymouth, Michigan-based, Gasbarre Industrial Furnace Systems (IFS) (formerly known as J.L. Becker).
  • A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held to mark the completion and opening of a 15,000-square foot building expansion at the corporate headquarters of Advanced Heat Treat Corp. (AHT), located in Waterloo, Iowa.
  • Braidy Industries has alerted potential investors that the aluminum mill it plans to build in northeast Kentucky will open in 2021, not in 2020 as previously projected, a change due to a “minor adjustment to the construction schedule.”
  • Multiple industries have recently purchased and installed equipment in SECO/WARWICK’s Vector® vacuum furnace line, including an international electric motor producer, an emissions control device manufacturer, a forging company, a defense contractor, an automotive manufacturer, and an aircraft components manufacturer.
  • Kandil Steel, headquartered in Cairo, Egypt, recently commissioned bell annealer technology from EBNER. Kandil, which is celebrating its 150 anniversary, is expanding the EBNER HICON/H2® bell annealer located at Galva Metal by four work bases to a total of fourteen. The facility is scheduled to start production in 2020.
  • A 2000°F (1093°C), inert atmosphere, heavy-duty furnace, No. 1039, was recently purchased for heat treating turbine components at a customer’s facility. The workspace dimensions of the Grieve Corporation furnace measure 36” W x 60” D x 36” H. 73.
  • A medical device company recently acquired the assets of Options Medical LLC, a Florida-based medical device distributor. Orthofix Medical Inc., which manufactures musculoskeletal products and therapies, is purchasing the distributor of bone growth therapies devices.
  • A U.S.-based orthopedic and spinal medical device manufacturer and developer recently agreed to sell major assets related to its artificial joint, trauma and spinal product businesses to Kyocera International Inc., based in San Diego, Calif.  The assets of Renovis Surgical Technologies Inc. will be transferred into a new California-based company, wholly owned by Kyocera International Inc., to be named Kyocera Medical Technologies Inc.
  • Buehler, an ITW Company, and ASM International are celebrating 75 of continuous partnership in 2019. The pinnacle of this relationship is Buehler’s continuous support of the ASM World Training Center in Novelty, Ohio, through its innovations for metallography and hardness testing, solutions for the newest materials and participation in ASM International activities.
  • APMI International has named Joseph Tunick Strauss and John L. Johnson. as the organization’s 2019 Fellows. APMI International’s most prestigious award recognizes APMI members for their significant contributions to the goals, purpose, and mission of the organization as well as for a high level of expertise in the technology, practice, or business of the industry.
  • Chemical Coaters Association International (CCAI) recently announced its first Women in Finishing FORUM which will be held at the Embassy Suites South Bend at Notre Dame from May 9-11, 2019. CCAI began its Women in Finishing initiative with a networking reception at FABTECH 2017 in Chicago. The response exceeded expectations, leading to the official establishment of Women in Finishing (WiF) under CCAI. 2019 will feature the expansion of WiF programming, including the Women in Finishing FORUM.

How to Keep Your Cooling System Up and Running

Most cooling system failures are not catastrophic, merely expensive and disruptive. The most common problem is fouling — accumulated dirt, debris, products of corrosion, mineral scale, and bio-films that coat heat transfer surfaces.

  • Buy equipment that is easy to clean and easy to maintain.
  • Install filtration equipment to keep systems clean and that help in monitoring for excessive build-up.
  • Use closed-loop systems for furnace equipment—keep the system sealed, clean, and oxygen-free to control corrosion and fouling.
  • Install redundant systems—especially pumps, fans, and filters.
  • Have a backup source of water in the event of power failure (e.g., fuel-fired pumps, municipal water, or electric generator).

Metrology/Inspection Services Group Breaks Ground in Michigan

An international technology enterprise recently broke ground on the company’s new facility for its Industrial Quality and Research division.

ZEISS has begun construction on the new modern site near Detroit, Michigan, which will provide a broad portfolio of dimensional metrology and inspection equipment and services to a wide variety of industries including automotive, medical, aerospace, defense, machine tools, and general manufacturing job shops. ZEISS Industrial Quality Solutions will offer system demonstrations for customers as well as metrology services.

“We are investing over 45 million dollars in the Detroit metro region to strengthen and increase our engagement in this global automotive and smart factory hot spot,” said Dr. Jochen Peter, Member of the Executive Board of the ZEISS Group and Head of the Industrial Quality and Research segment. “This will not only have a strong, positive impact for our customers and partners in North America but will also generate new momentum for the whole Industrial Quality and Research segment of ZEISS worldwide.”

ZEISS measuring specialists will be able to perform proof-of-capability demonstrations for multidimensional measurement equipment, surface form and geometry equipment, and non-destructive testing and surface defect detection equipment. The need to show how digital platforms and solutions that connect ZEISS equipment to the new infrastructure within modern smart factory environments is becoming increasingly important.

It will also be a center for aftermarket sales support. Here customers will receive training on how to use the software and systems. Additionally, software help desk services will operate out of the facility.

  • John Finch has joined Plibrico Company LLC as the Southeastern Territory Manager. Mr. Finch, an accomplished refractory professional and is an active member of several different industry and refractory associations.
  • Timothy C. Fish has joined the sales team at Solar Atmospheres of Western PA as Regional Sales Manager, focusing on the Midwest region.
  • Triumph Fabrications is being acquired by Arlington Capital Partners. Triumph consists of four companies that manufacture, coat, and assemble complex sheet metal components for fixed wing and rotorcraft platforms. Heat treating and annealing are included in the operations.
  • A new state-of-the-art aluminum billet manufacturing facility will be constructed in the Rapids East Commerce Center in the City of Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin. Matalco Inc., a member of the Giampaolo Group, will house the new facility in a 110,000 sq ft manufacturing plant, which at full production capacity, will produce in excess of 230 million pounds of high-quality aluminum billet. This is part of a larger investment plan to construct several greenfield aluminum remelt facilities for billet and rolling slab production in North America.
  • A series of gas nitriding and tempering furnaces have been installed at a commercial heat treatment company specializing in mold & die steel heat treatment for its newly formed division. The horizontal gas nitriding furnaces supplied by JGEF Furnaces can produce a hard clean substrate onto which is deposited a duplex layer with high hardness values. The JGEF tempering furnace series will help the manufacturer achieve a pre-vacuum protective atmosphere for tempering, and the atmosphere in the furnace chamber will reduce the oxidative decarburization reaction of the heat-treated workpiece. The furnace has a load capacity of 11023 pounds and an operating temperature range of 302-1202°F
  • Grupo TTT, one of the leaders in heat and surface treatments, recently added a SECO/WARWICK vacuum heat treatment and brazing system equipped with high-pressure gas quench to their Bergara, Spain, facility to run a variety of processes. This is the fourth system purchased by Grupo TTT with an earlier installation in Europe, and two systems currently in operation in Mexico.
  • Three box furnaces have been shipped for installation by Lindberg/MPH. An unnamed customer purchased one Temperite™ Box Furnace and one Treet-All™ Box Furnace to work in tandem. The Temperite™ Box Furnace is configured for aging, annealing, austempering, baking, solution treating, and tempering applications, while the Treet-All™ Box Furnace is configured for annealing, ashing, austempering, brazing, preheating, and solution treating applications. In addition, Lindberg/MPH  announced the shipment of one Treet-All™ Box Furnace to the technology industry. The maximum temperature rating of this light industrial box furnace is 2050°F.
  • A state-of-the-art continuous mesh belt heat treat system has been commissioned for the production of high-quality automotive fasteners. CAN-ENG Furnaces International Ltd was selected for a project in the Piedmont Region of Italy, one of four installation locations for this globally recognized producer of specialty automotive fasteners.
  • A Blue M Friction-Aire® Safety Oven, which provides a controlled heat source without heating elements, was recently shipped to a manufacturer of consumer products by Thermal Product Solutions.

Kudos Chatter

  • StandardAero’s Maryville, Tennessee facility recently completed and shipped its 10,000th auxiliary power unit (APU) repair since the nearly 25 years it has been providing APU MRO services to the industry. The specific 10,000th repair was on a Honeywell model 36-150RJ APU for a regional aircraft operator.
  • Allied Mineral Products has launched a new Chinese-language website. The website, alliedchina.com, targets the local business market in China while actively engaging existing customers. In Northern China, Allied’s manufacturing facility in Tianjin celebrated its 20th anniversary last year.
  • The ASM Materials Education Foundation is pleased to announce the winners of the 2018 ASM Materials Genome Toolkit competition. As determined by an independent review committee, the undergraduate engineering departments at Georgia Institute of Technology, Louisiana Technological University, Montana Technological University, and Worcester Polytechnic Institute will receive a three-year site license for a suite of Thermo-Calc software tools intended to aid in the instruction of computational materials design, an emerging engineering practice deemed essential to the success of the U.S. Materials Genome Initiative (MGI) and global leadership in manufacturing.

Effect of Exhaust Gas Temperature vs. O2 on Efficiency

Tuning a burner properly is important for safety. Tuning can also have a significant effect on efficiency in some but not all cases.

The efficiency of a conventional cold air burner varies significantly with the amount of excess air (related to % O2 in the exhaust products). Since a cold air burner does not use the exhaust gas to preheat the combustion temperature, the exhaust gas temperature is essentially equal to the furnace temperature. For a cold air burner operating at a 1,850°F, reducing excess air from 20% to 10% (reducing O2 from 4% to 2%) will increase efficiency by almost 5%.

Modern high-efficiency burners use the exhaust gas to preheat the combustion air as it enters the burner. Therefore, the temperature of the exhaust gas leaving the burner is significantly lower. The lower the exhaust gas temperature, the smaller the effect of a change in excess air on efficiency. For example, a self-regenerative burner operating at 1,850°F may have an exhaust gas temperature around 480°F. In this case, reducing excess air from 20% to 10% (reducing O2 from 4% to 2%) will only increase efficiency by about 1%.

As a general rule of thumb, reducing exhaust gas temperature by 180°F will increase efficiency by about 5%. So while proper tuning is important for many reasons, it does not have a significant effect on the efficiency of burners with advanced heat recovery systems.

John Young says he “was born in a heat treat. My dad was a heat treater, and I would go to the plant on weekends with him when I was about 6 or 7 years old. I  would spend a lot of time raising and lowering the lid on a homo carb and thinking it was great fun. During the summer, I was a maintenance helper in the plant and got all of the dirty cleanup duties.” In 2016, after over thirty years experience in various roles throughout the heat treat industry, John Young launched Young Metallurgical Consulting, which works with in-house heat treat departments to teach the day-to-day processes necessary to manage and improve their area of operation. His purpose is to answer the question, “Now that I have a heat treat furnace, what am I supposed to do with it?” This includes providing training workshops to the new-to-the-industry heat treating employee as well as going beyond the classroom with instruction which he presents as an adjunct professor of metallurgical engineering at Macomb Community College and which he shares with experienced employees in the field. His career has included multiple opportunities to lead and inspire employees toward quality work and service to the customer.

  1. Received B.S Metallurgical Engineering, Michigan Tech University.
  2. Received Master of Business Administration, Michigan State University
  3. Began career as a blast furnace engineer, worked as a quality manager responsible for quality function at a company with 45 heat treat staff, training furnace operators in basic metallurgy and inspection techniques. Became familiar with auto, heavy equipment and auto industries utilizing batch, continuous belt, and shaker hearth furnaces.
  4. Worked in the family heat treat business as Quality Manager and Plant Manager until father died and business was sold.
  5. President of a 25-person heat treat company with complete authority and responsibility. Provided neutral hardening, carbonitriding and deep case carburizing to auto, heavy truck and railroad industries.
  6. Vice-president/general manager at a 50-person operation utilizing four continuous belt furnaces processing 50 MM lb/yr of threaded fasteners to the auto industry. Approved source for induction hardening Taptite fasteners.
  7. Commission sales representative of heat treats, platers, and other secondary sources in maintaining and increasing sales volume.
  8. General manager, directing 25-person operation utilizing rotary retort, continuous belt, and atmosphere annealing furnaces.  Major heat treat source for Tier 1 supplier shipping to worldwide facilities of Big 3 auto manufacturer.

  • Todd McDonald was recently hired as president and chief executive officer of Thermal Process Holdings, Inc., which was formed by Calvert Street Capital Partners and John Hubbard, former CEO of Bodycote, PLC, to pursue a buy-and-build strategy in the thermal processing industry.
  • Gasbarre Products, Inc. launched its new website, www.gasbarre.com. As part of the rebranding initiative, Gasbarre has categorized its diverse product offering into three business units: Powder Compaction Solutions, Thermal Processing Systems, and Manufacturing Technologies.
  • Bentraum D. Huffman has been named president and chief executive officer of the Ellwood Group, Inc. Huffman previously had served as chief operating officer since 2015.
  • Chemcoaters, a coil coater and manufacturer of proprietary coating chemistries, has acquired Eco Green Coatings, making it a wholly owned subsidiary. Both companies are located in Gary, Indiana.
  • Connie MackeyAdvanced Heat Treat Corp. (AHT) Corporate Quality Systems Manager, was recently selected to be a voting member of the Nadcap Heat Treating Task Group. Nadcap is a global accreditation program designed to ensure standardized and cost-effective approaches and to provide continual improvement among the aerospace and defense industry.
  • A large retort box furnace used for de-bindering ceramic composite pre-peg materials along with powder metals processing and hot isostatic processing was recently purchased from L&L Special Furnace Co., Inc.
  • A cabinet oven from Grieve, No. 934, is currently being used by the customer for heat treating. Workspace dimensions of this 850°F oven measure 38” W x 20” D x 26” H.
  • A LP gas-fired heavy duty car bottom oven with fume incinerator was recently delivered to a leader in the oil and gas industry by Wisconsin Oven Corporation. This car bottom oven will be used for prebaking drill pipe joints. The thermal clean oven has a maximum operating temperature of 800° F and work chamber dimensions of 8’6″ wide x 50’0″ long x 8’6″ high.

Kudos Chatter

  • Solar Atmospheres, Inc. has filed a Patent Application with the US Patent Office, application number 15/999,873 for a high-pressure, rapid gas quenching vacuum furnace utilizing an isolation transformer in the blower motor power system. The gas quench with a 600 HP motor operates at 460 volts in Argon gas, utilizing a double wound, Magnetic Specialties, Inc. electrical isolation transformer, primary winding 1:1 to the secondary winding, with a Variable Speed Drive and solid state electrical spike protection for motor arc suppression.
  • Thermal-Vac Technology, Inc., located in Orange, CA has received merit status for NADCAP AC7102 Heat Treating accreditation. Thermal-Vac Technology Inc. City Steel Heat Treating, located in Santa Fe Springs, CA has been awarded NADCAP accreditation in AC7102 Heat Treating. This is the initial accreditation award after our 2016 acquisition of this location.
  • Cornwell Quality Tools, which produces fine quality tools with high-grade alloy steel, combined with modern heat-treating methods, celebrates 100 years in business this year.
