  1. Baowu Aluminum Technology Co., Ltd.’s continuous annealing and chemical pre-treatment line for processing strip coils for the aluminum market supplied by Tenova produced its first hot coil.
  2. A Midwest manufacturer of brass components is upgrading their heat treat capabilities with a new furnace from Gasbarre Thermal Processing Systems.
  3. Plastometrex, a materials science startup, is working with global testing and inspection provider Element Materials Technology.
  4. A global bearing manufacturer decided to furnish one of its Chinese plants with a vacuum furnace by SECO/WARWICK with gas quenching, carburizing (LPC), and carbonitriding (LCPN).
  5. To support R&D and additive manufacturing projects, Solar Atmospheres of California has added some small vacuum furnace capacity to their equipment offerings.
  6. An Indian manufacturer of feed machinery and contractor for “turnkey” agricultural engineering projects has placed an order with SECO/WARWICK for a Vector® vacuum furnace with vertical insertion of loads.
  7. Heat treatment specialist Bodycote provided solutions for the world’s first hydroformed architectural stainless-steel façade screen that was manufactured by German fabricator Edelstahl-Mechanik. This screen was installed in the newly constructed Science and Engineering Complex at the Harvard University campus in Boston, MA.
  8. SECO/WARWICK will install a continuous line for controlled atmosphere brazing (CAB) of large-dimension battery coolers at the plant of a European manufacturer of heat exchangers.
  9. Gasbarre Thermal Processing Systems integral quench furnace line was recently commissioned to a manufacturer of specialty nut and bolt assemblies in the eastern U.S.
  10. One of the largest Brazilian hardening plants has started to operate a SECO/WARWICK Vector® vacuum furnace.

  1. With increased interest in U.S. semiconductor research and manufacturing, ECM USA, Inc. recently announced a strong bi-monthly sales order pattern for 2021 related to their product expansion both in research & development and with laboratory furnace systems.
  2. Pfeiffer Vacuum introduced OmniControl® universal control unit for pumps and measurement instruments.
  3. Ipsen reported a surge in interest for standardized equipment and revealed a steady increase of orders for TITAN® vacuum furnaces this year, with five in July. Clients range from those in cutting tools and machinery to additive manufacturing and aerospace.
  4. Heating technology company Kanthal announced the agreement to divest its semiconductor capital equipment business to Yield Engineering Systems, Inc., headquartered in Fremont, CA.
  5. Bodycote increased hot isostatic pressing capacity in Greenville, SC.
  6. Nitrex, a global provider of fully integrated surface treatment solutions, has announced that G-M Enterprises has made its official market debut under the Nitrex banner as of January 2022.
  7. Nancy Easterbrook has joined HarbisonWalker International (HWI), a refractory products and services supplier in North America, as the director of Recycled Materials.
  8. HarbisonWalker International is building a manufacturing and service hub for its steel customers in North America.
  9. During the Metal Treating Institute’s (MTI) Fall Meeting, Ipsen, along with several other vested organizations, presented donations to support the MTI Educational Foundation, which provides scholarships for the next generation of heat treating industry professionals.
  10. GHI Smart Furnaces celebrated the 84th anniversary of their founding in December 1937.
  11. HeatTek announced the purchase of an additional facility in Ixonia, WI to serve primarily as a distribution center for the rapidly growing company’s components and spare parts inventory. This expansion follows another plant acquisition in West Allis, WI.
  12. Hubbard-Hall announced that they’ve made the Dow product line available on their eCommerce site.

  1. Leading women at HarbisonWalker International (HWI) based at the company’s headquarters in Pittsburgh, PA have recently been recognized for their work: HWI has promoted Melissa Bihary to vice president of People and Organizational Effectiveness Also, the — the workforce development and education partner of the — has presented Bryn Snow, director of Application Technology-Nonferrous/Glass at HWI, with a STEP Ahead Award.   2. This award is given in recognition of current/ongoing commitment to the betterment of the commercial heat treating industry with one or more significant accomplishments.
  3. Tony Karadimas has been nominated as vice president of UPC-MARATHON Sales and NITREX.
  4. Bodycote in Syracuse, NY passed certification to AS9100 standard with zero findings.
  5. A group of 70 employees and management of SECO/WARWICK located in Świebodzin, Poland planted 3,000 beech seedlings on Lumberjack and Forester World Day.
  6. Nitrex Metal, Inc., global provider of fully integrated surface treatment solutions and technologies, was selected to be part of a “Global Thought Leaders” series broadcast on CBS News.
  7. Deep Cryogenics International trademarked the slogan “Infinitely Renewable, Infinitely Recyclable” for the use of liquid nitrogen in their deep cryogenic treatment process.

  • TimkenSteel has announced that Ward J. “Tim” Timken, Jr. has stepped down as CEO and president and as chairman of the TimkenSteel board of directors. Effective immediately, the Board of Directors has appointed Terry L. Dunlap as the company’s interim CEO and president. John P. Reilly, the current lead director of the TimkenSteel board of directors, will immediately assume the role of chairman of the board.
  • Rick Merluzzi has been promoted to the position of CEO at Metal Exchange Corporation. Mike Lefton, current chairman and CEO, will assume the title of executive chairman. Merluzzi oversees all their businesses, including Metal Exchange Trading, Pennex Aluminum Company, Continental Aluminum and Electro Cycle, Inc.
  • Platte River Equity has sold its portfolio company PRV Metals to Tinicum LP. PRV Metals, a leading supplier of specialty forged titanium and high-performance steel products to aerospace, defense, medical, energy, and industrial sectors, operates through two subsidiaries Sierra Alloys and TSI Titanium. 
  • US aviation group Collins Aerospace has extended the contracts for the supply of thrust reverser housings for the engine gondolas of the Airbus A350 XWB and Boeing 787 aircraft. The order includes the delivery of the engine cowlings into the next decade. This contract renewal is a major contribution to strengthening FACC’s position as an international partner in the Engines & Nacelles segment.
  • Bodycote Thermal Processing Inc has announced it will spend $15.3 million to renovate and equip a dilapidated, 58,000-square-foot building in Geddes, New York, to replace the company’s facility that burned down in Van Buren, New York, in 2018. Equipment will be purchased that will allow the company to perform heat treatment processes not currently available in the United States.
  • Element Materials Technology has announced that its new aerospace materials testing laboratory in Shanghai, China, is now open for business. Element confirmed it has completed a number of accreditations including ISO/IEC 17025:2017 and Nadcap, with OEM audits underway. The new laboratory specializes in a comprehensive range of services that include: chemical analysis; fatigue testing; failure investigation; mechanical testing; metallurgical analysis, and on-site testing at client sites. Customers will also benefit from pre-testing services, including a full machine shop and heat treatment furnaces for the treatment of materials prior to testing.
  • Construction is moving forward at a brisk pace at Stack Metallurgical Group‘s new Albany, Oregon site, where the company will offer both Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP) and vacuum heat-treating services.
  • Three intelligent waste heat recovery systems have been awarded by Tangshan Zhengfeng Iron & Steel Co., LTD, in Hebei Province, China, to Tenova, a Techint Group company specializing in innovative solutions for the metals and mining industries.
  • A contract to supply on-site nitrogen to Samwha Capacitor’s new multi-layer ceramic capacitor (MLCC) plant being built adjacent to its existing plant in Yongin, South Korea, has been awarded to Air Products. Under the new contract, Air Products will expand its nitrogen capacity to support the increasing demand from Samwha Capacitor’s existing and new plants.
  • Advanced soft magnetic expertise and ultra-efficient electrical components will be provided by Carpenter Technology to multiple OEMs to progress their electric aircraft aspirations.  Carpenter Technology will provide advanced soft magnetic expertise and ultra-efficient electrical components to be used in R&D and demonstrator motors and engines, leading to construction of lighter-weight, longer-lasting electric propulsion systems.
  • Two reheating furnaces to reheat blooms and billets have been delivered to Shijiazhuang Iron & Steel Company within China’s HBIS Group by Fives.
  • Element Materials Technology has been awarded the 2018 Gold Boeing Performance Excellence Award (BPEA) for its Huntington Beach, California, laboratory, while the Element Los Angeles laboratory won Silver. The annual award recognizes superior performance in the highest tiers of Boeing’s supply chain. This is the second year Element Huntington Beach has achieved the Gold award and the first year that Element Los Angeles has achieved Silver status.
  • Plibrico Corporation has awarded employees Joe Feldhacker, a project manager from Plibrico’s Omaha, Nebraska location, and Lou Calderon, refractory CAD designer in the company’s engineering department in Northbrook, Illinois, API 936 Refractory Personnel Certification. Both demonstrated advanced knowledge of installation, inspection, testing and repair of monolithic refractory linings, passing the rigorous API 936 exam administered by the American Petroleum Institute (API), a national trade association representing all facets of the natural gas and oil industry.
  • Spirit AeroSystems was recognised at the Composites and Advanced Materials Expo (CAMX) with the Award for Composite Excellence (ACE) in Manufacturing: Material and Process Innovation. Spirit received the award for its development of the Advanced Structures Technology and Revolutionary Architecture (ASTRA) demonstrator aircraft panel, which was displayed at the CAMX conference in Anaheim, California.
  • The 100th nacelle system for Airbus’ A330neo wide-body jetliner has been delivered by Safran Nacelles.

Briefly:

Dr. John M. Tartaglia, a Senior Metallurgical Engineer and the Engineering Manager at Element Wixom, has been performing failure analyses and materials characterization for more than 30 years. He holds B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Materials Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, New York. Tartaglia’s doctoral thesis concerned the elevated temperature fatigue behavior of superalloys, and he is an expert in mechanical testing, wrought steels, aluminum, magnesium, fatigue, failure analysis, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, and energy dispersive spectroscopy.

 Dr. Tartaglia is a Key Reader for Materials and Metallurgical Transactions, a member of the editorial committee for Journal of Materials Engineering and Performance, chapter writer for an ASM Handbook, a member of several ASTM committees, a Fellow of ASM International and an award-winning author for the American Foundry Society. Materials Technology Group Acquires Nadcap/ISO Accredited Lab

 

A global provider of a comprehensive range of materials and product qualification test, inspection and certification services recently announced the acquisition of a Nadcap and ISO 17025 accredited laboratory headquartered near Cleveland, Ohio.

Element Materials Technology (Element) acquired Orbit Industries, Inc. (Orbit) strengthening its leadership position in non-destructive testing (NDT) for the aerospace industry.

With over 30 prime approvals, Orbit, which also operates out of four other satellite inspection facilities across Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York, specializes in ultrasonic, liquid penetrant, magnetic particle and chemical processing for raw materials, semi-finished and finished products, including landing gear components, airfoils, and aluminum wheels.

Element Launches World-Leading Material Testing, PQT Facility

Following significant capex investment, Element Materials Technology has launched its newly expanded and upgraded Cincinnati, Ohio, facility, as one of the largest independent materials testing and product qualification testing (PQT) service facilities in the U.S. The former-Accutek location has expanded to 62,000ft2 and now provides specialist testing to both the aerospace and medical device sectors and houses three of Element’s Global Centers of Technical Excellence delivering critical testing services to these sectors.
