MTI Member Profile: Aalberts surface technologies

With roots that stretch back more than six decades, Aalberts surface technologies represents the coming together of several respected names in North American heat treating. The organization’s history traces to the founding of Atmosphere Furnace Company in Michigan in 1962, followed by the founding and acquisition of several specialized companies over the decades, such as Atmosphere Annealing, Al-Fe Heat Treating, Applied Process, Accurate Brazing, and NitroSteel. Through strategic acquisitions and growth, these businesses were gradually brought together under a single umbrella, creating one of the largest commercial heat treating groups in the world.

Today, the company employs more than 300 people across multiple facilities and serves a diverse client base that includes automotive, aerospace, military, mining, agriculture, medical, and construction industries. While its footprint and capabilities have expanded significantly over the years, its focus remains on helping manufacturers achieve the material properties required for demanding applications.

A defining characteristic of Aalberts surface technologies is the breadth of its process portfolio. Rather than centering its business on a single technology, the company works with clients to identify the heat treatment solution best suited to a component’s performance requirements. Its core offerings include austempering, aluminum heat treating, hot isostatic pressing (HIP), and brazing, serving applications that demand a combination of strength, durability, dimensional stability, and performance.

Among these capabilities, the organization has developed particular expertise in austempering and advanced bainitic technologies. It has specialized processes, such as Carbidic Austempered Ductile Iron (CADI) and Carbo-Austempering™, both designed to deliver combinations of strength, wear resistance, fatigue performance, and dimensional stability that can offer alternatives to conventional manufacturing approaches. The company is also known for NitroSteel®, its proprietary ferritic nitrocarburizing process for bars and tubes.

One feature that distinguishes Aalberts surface technologies is its ability to provide complementary processes within the same organization. For example, HIP and subsequent heat treatment can often be performed under one roof, helping streamline production and reduce logistical complexity for clients. The company also maintains a dedicated research and development team composed of experienced metallurgists who support process development, problem-solving, and continuous improvement efforts.

The organization’s expertise extends beyond day-to-day production. Employees are active participants in technical societies at both local and national levels, frequently serving in leadership positions and contributing to standard development efforts that help shape the future of the heat treating industry. This involvement reflects a longstanding commitment to advancing both the science and practice of thermal processing.

When discussing what makes the company most proud, leadership points not to equipment or acquisitions, but to its people. Many employees have spent more than 30 years in the industry, bringing deep technical knowledge and a passion for heat treating that has passed from one generation to the next. That experience, combined with a culture of technical engagement and continuous learning, continues to drive Aalberts surface technologies forward.

As Aalberts looks to the future, collaboration across its expanding network of businesses — including recent additions to the broader Aalberts family — will help the organization broaden its capabilities and continue delivering practical, technically sound solutions to manufacturers throughout North America.
