Hardening

Hardening is a broad metallurgical category that is known by several names; through hardening, neutral hardening, direct hardening, furnace hardening, and austenitizing. Some of the goals of hardening processes are to increase a material’s strength, and toughness; to achieve a desirable microstructure; and to minimize distortion and excessive residual stress while avoiding cracking.
