In today’s News from Abroad installment, we highlight several global developments in thermal processing — from increased electric arc furnace utilization and investments in lower-emission steel production to expanded industrial gas supplies and leadership changes in the vacuum technology sector — reflecting ongoing efforts to strengthen production capacity and modernize industrial operations worldwide.
Heat Treat Today partners with two international publications to deliver the latest news, tech tips, and cutting-edge articles that will serve our audience — manufacturers with in-house heat treat. Furnaces International, a Quartz Business Media publication, primarily serves the English-speaking globe, and heat processing, a Vulkan-Verlag GmbH publication, serves mostly the European and Asian heat treat markets.
Specialty Steel Production Shift Boosts EAF Capacity

“Deutsche Edelstahlwerke (DEW), German subsidiary of Swiss Steel, is to undergo restructuring over the next two years. The restructure will involve concentrating steel production at its Witten site, suspending operations at its Siegen site, and pursuing the sale of its Hagen and Krefeld plants.”
“Consolidation of future sales volumes is expected to bring the Witten site’s electric arc furnace and casting plant close to full capacity utilisation. Planned investments at the site include improvements to the electric arc furnace and continuous casting plant.”

EAF Project Enters Equipment Installation Phase

“Tata Steel is preparing for the first major components of its £1.25 billion electric arc furnace (EAF) project to be installed at its Port Talbot iron and steel works in Wales, UK. Working alongside PERT, which is delivering the furnace’s water systems, UK-based company Braithwaite is producing a 200-cubic-metre emergency water tank to be installed on top of a 50-metre tower.”
“The equipment will be among the first major components installed as construction of the new steelmaking facility progresses.”

Additional Gas Supply Enables Steel Production Increase

“Under a long-term supply agreement, Linde has doubled its on-site capacity for Tata Steel through the de-captivation of two air separation units (ASUs) at Kalinganagar.”
“The newly acquired units are now providing oxygen, nitrogen and argon for Tata Steel’s iron and steelmaking operations. The additional capacity will help enable Tata Steel to increase annual steel production at Kalinganagar from three million tons to eight million tons per year.”
