For Carl Herrera, leadership begins with people. Remaining calm when challenges arise, he approaches problems with optimism and consistently helps those around him perform at their best. Those qualities have shaped a career that began more than 12 years ago as a green sand molder and has since progressed to operations manager of the Wirco Champaign Foundry, where he oversees molding, melt, pour, and finishing operations.

Much of ’the company’s recent casting success is credited to Carl’s determination to improve. He embraces difficult projects, evaluates new products and manufacturing methods, and continually looks for ways to produce higher-quality castings that support the heat treat industry. Rather than accepting existing processes, he encourages experimentation, learning, and thoughtful improvement that benefits both the company and its clients.

Developing people is equally important to Carl. He is committed to helping employees grow into stronger professionals while building a team culture rooted in accountability, collaboration, and mutual respect. His participation in the Metal Treating Institute’s YES program, as well as participation in Steel Founders Society, AFS, and other industry and academic associations, further strengthened those leadership skills and provided new perspectives that he continues to apply throughout the organization.
