Brian Flynn – Heat Treat Today 40 Under 40

Name: Brian Flynn
Company: Erie Steel Ltd.
Position: Plant Manager
Years in Industry: 3
Nominated by: Erie Steel Ltd.

Although he did not intend on becoming one, Brian Flynn is a third-generation heat treater, and, typical of this generation, he is doing things a little bit differently.

Born and raised in the greater Toledo metro area, Brian attended the University of Cincinnati where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering with a minor in Materials Science. Upon graduation, Brian took a position with Libbey Glass as a process engineer, and quickly learned the operation of glass furnaces. His dedication caught the eye of Libbey management, who quickly transitioned him into production supervision. Not satisfied with the limitations of big business, Brian accepted a position with Erie Steel as process engineer.

Brian’s engineering background led to an early success in process engineering, and his demonstrated work ethic earmarked him as ready for more responsibility. With the completion of an Executive MBA from the University of Toledo, Brian was promoted to plant manager, demonstrating his grasp of operations and practice of his leadership skills.

This unique engineering/business management background provides Brian with a unique skill set particularly relevant to the management of technical services, as is the case with heat treating. He knows that the importance of people far exceeds their professional ability to execute a manufacturing process, furthering their development and engagement have become his goal.

Technology deployment, people skills, customer service, and leadership – all done just a little bit differently than the old school way.
