Friedrich-Georg Kehrer: How green are the energy-intensive foundry and steel sectors of industry? How sustainably do they produce and how eco-friendly is their use of materials? These are the crucial questions dominating the agenda and providing ample food for thought at GIFA, METEC, THERMPROCESS and NEWCAST 2023. Tasked with achieving climate neutrality by no later than 2050, these industries face what is probably the biggest transformation in their history. This decisive development will be reflected by the Düsseldorf trade fair quartet: on the one hand, the challenges that the sectors face; on the other hand, the innovations that machinery and plant manufacturers offer to the metallurgical and casting industries worldwide clearly making them part of the solution rather than the problem. Through in-depth exchange with the professional bodies and experts from all stages of the value chain we have identified the following three mega trends:
Sustainability in the sense of energy and resource efficiency, for instance in the form of green steel or green iron as well as the decarbonization of the steel and iron industry using hydrogen as a catalyst – summarized succinctly under the “ecoMetals” motto.
The use of digital technologies in manufacturing, i.e. the buzzword “Industry 4.0” in steel mills and foundries also remains another mega trend.

The buzzword “ecoMetals” is mentioned in connection with GIFA, METEC, THEMPROCESS and NEWCAST time and again. What does it mean and what role does the campaign play in the events?
Friedrich-Georg Kehrer: Messe Düsseldorf’s ecoMetals Campaign forms an integral part of the “Bright World of Metals” and has a long-standing success story. It refers to the ecological path of the casting and metal processing industries and promotes exhibiting companies that invest in innovative, sustainable and economically competitive technologies. Trade visitors can easily identify the award-winning innovations and are guided to the respective exhibitors at GIFA, METEC, THERMPROCESS and NEWCAST by complimentary daily Guided Tours – so-called ecoMetals Trails. Furthermore, these exhibitors are especially highlighted in the respective Internet portals as well as in the catalogue and their exhibition stands are marked. The ecoMetals campaign was already received very well at the previous edition of the trade fair quartet. Our visitors highly appreciated this guidance. I am particularly pleased to see that some of our other capital goods trade fairs such as wire and Tube or decarbXpo have also adopted this concept this year. With this move Messe Düsseldorf also wants to live up to its ecological responsibility and provide the drivers for environment-saving products, production and processes with a special forum.
So the ecoMetals Trails will enable trade visitors to discover “new pathways for value creation” at the trade fairs?
Friedrich-Georg Kehrer: Yes, exactly! The ecoMetals brand focuses on three fields of sustainability: Resources, Innovation and Production and/or Processes. How can raw materials be extracted in a more resource-efficient way and processed more efficiently? What is trending in metal and non-metal recycling? Which new technologies, machines and plants are used to improve the energy and CO2-balance? The sustainability drivers exhibiting at GIFA, METEC, THERMPROCESS and NEWCAST will share their solutions for all of these challenges. At their exhibition stands they will explain how they reduce their carbon footprint at their production sites and merge business with environmental protection. Overcoming these challenges is as important as ever to hold your own against international competition as a valued business partner.
How much does participation in the ecoMetals Trails cost?
Friedrich-Georg Kehrer: Participation in the ecoMetals Trails is free of charge for all visitors. Registrations can be submitted on the respective websites in the run-up to the trade fairs. Of course, those deciding onsite to take part are welcome to join a tour without prior registration.
On September 21 this year the ecoMetals Day will be held as the “Steel Day of the Future” at the Düsseldorf Exhibition Centre. What kind of event is this and how does it relate to the Bright World of Metals?
Friedrich-Georg Kehrer: The ecoMetals Day will be held for the first time, concurrently with glasstec, as part of our new event decarbXpo. The ecoMetals Day will attract the Who’s Who of the steel sector and cover all topics relevant to the technical, economic and ecological transformation of the steel industry in form of unique lectures. These impulses are, of course, also of enormous importance for THERMPROCESS 2023.
Can you already reveal any details regarding registration levels? How are the trade fair preparations going in general?
Friedrich-Georg Kehrer: The preliminary work has been completed successfully, many companies have already registered and the allocation of exhibition space is in full swing. Now the time for finetuning has come and, of course, for the visitor promotion campaigns. Our exhibitors are eager to inspire the trade fair audience at GIFA, METEC, THERMPROCESS and NEWCAST with their technologies and innovations. All renowned companies will be represented in Düsseldorf again plus many new exhibitors taking part for the first time. GIFA, METEC, THERMPROCESS and NEWCAST are the most relevant events for their respective industries; they thrive on personal encounters and the exchange of ideas in this special setting. Everyone is particularly looking forward to this — especially after such a long time!

Forming the “The Bright World of Metals”, the four trade fairs GIFA, METEC, THERMPROCESS, and NEWCAST will take place from June 25 – 29, 2019 at the fairgrounds in Düsseldorf, Germany, where the latest advancements for foundry technology, metallurgy, thermo-process technology, and castings will be on display.
Excellent exhibitor registration figures for the “Bright World of Metals”
About 2,100 exhibitors from all over the world will showcase their innovations at the quartet of trade fairs for foundry and metallurgical technology.
“For the first time in the more than 60-year history, we had more than 2,000 exhibitors at the 2015 staging. Therefore I am particularly pleased that we have succeeded in maintaining this high level and in confirming the dominant position of our four trade fairs,” said Friedrich Kehrer, Global Portfolio Director Metals and Flow Technology at Messe Düsseldorf.
The exhibitors will present the entire spectrum of foundry technology, castings, metallurgy and thermo process technology in twelve halls. As the leading trade fairs in their respective sectors, GIFA, METEC, THERMPROCESS and NEWCAST 2019 will cover the most important trends – including additive manufacturing (with a special show in Hall 3 and the “Metal 3D Printing” conference on June 26) and Industry 4.0 as well as lightweight structures in the automotive industry. The international reach of the four trade fairs is expected to be very broad again this year. Usually, more than 50% of the 78,000 trade visitors from overseas and other European countries.
ecoMetals & ecoMetals Trails
The ecoMetals campaign by Messe Düsseldorf is an established and successful feature at the “Bright World of Metals”. The emphasis this year will again be on environmentally sound operation and production in the sector, with resource and energy efficiency, climate protection and innovative processes and products as the main topic. About 30 exhibitors will participate under the heading “ecoMetals@Bright World of Metals” and the “ecoMetals Trails” will offer visitors guided tours.
Bright World of Metals: 4 Trade Fairs Under One Roof
GIFA, METEC, THERMPROCESS and NEWCAST are independent trade fairs but together form the “Bright World of Metals”. At GIFA, the International Foundry Trade Fair and Technical Forum, about 900 exhibitors from 47 countries will display their products in Halls 10 to 13 and 15 to 17. Participating world market leaders will include Bühler AG (Switzerland), ASK Chemicals GmbH (Germany), FOSECO (Germany), Hüttenes Albertus (Germany), Loramendi S. Coop (Spain) and Vesuvius GmbH (Germany). There will also be large country group exhibits from Italy and China.
NEWCAST is fully booked
NEWCAST, the 5th International Trade Fair for Castings with the Newcast Forum, is fully booked for its 5th anniversary. Some 400 exhibitors from more than 30 nations will demonstrate in Halls 13 and 14 how global the production of castings has become. Market leaders such as Finoba Automotive GmbH (Germany), GOM GmbH (Germany), Gießerei Heunisch (Germany), Eisenwerk Brühl (Germany), Kimura Foundry Co. Ltd. (Japan), Kutes Metal Inc. (Turkey) and Waupaca Foundry (U.S.) will participate. The Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Technology and Advanced Materials/IFAM (Germany) will also be represented. The foundry associations from Croatia, Mexico, and Hungary will be at NEWCAST for the first time.
METEC 2019: New Record for Its 10th Anniversary
METEC, the 10th International Metallurgical Trade Fair, will feature the large plant manufacturers. With 530 from 34 countries so far, METEC is setting a new exhibitor record this year. Inteco (Austria), Primetals Technologies Ltd. (UK), RHI Magnesita (Austria), SMS Group (Germany) und Tenova S.P.A. (Italy) are among the exhibitors. Forged components will be on show at METEC for the first time. These were previously part of NEWCAST, but due to their increased importance they are better suited to the metallurgy trade fair.

With 300 exhibitors and 50% foreign participation, THERMPROCESS, the 12th International Trade Fair and Symposium for Thermo Process Technology, is the top event for international equipment suppliers. Dr. Guido Kleinschmidt, who is a member of the Managing Board of SMS group GmbH, is the new President of METEC, the International Metallurgical Trade Fair and Congresses from 25 to 29 June 2019. He was elected unanimously at the recent meeting of the steering committee of the four trade fairs GIFA, METEC, THERMPROCESS, NEWCAST. The election was necessary because the former METEC President Marcel Fasswald had left SMS group to join Thyssengroup Industrial Solutions AG as Chief Operating Officer.
Giantonio Toldo, Operations Manager for Element Materials Technology (Element) Padova laboratory in Limena, Italy, has been appointed as the Vice President of the Italian Association for Metallurgy’s (AIM) Technical Committee for the Control and Characterization of Materials.
OMG Inc. recently announced four promotions in supply-chain management and operations: Wayne Ringenbach was promoted to director of Manufacturing, which includes heat treating; Brad Bedard was promoted to director of Supply Chain Management; Chris Mowatt was promoted to director of Manufacturing Engineering; and Geri McCarthy was promoted to director of Operations.
Samuel, Son & Co., Mississauga, Ontario, has acquired Sierra Aluminum, Riverside, California. Sierra is a supplier of aluminum extrusions and related products to a number of end markets, including construction and transportation. Sachin Shivaram has been named president of Sierra Aluminum Group, following Ed Harris’s decision to retire from the company.
A heat treating equipment supplier based in Plymouth, Michigan, recently shipped a pair of 36” x 48” x 36” electrically heated temper furnaces to a major drive supplier in the Southeast. Gasbarre Furnace Group/J. L. Becker designed the furnaces, which operate from 300°F to 850°F with a temperature uniformity of ±5°F, to preheat workloads prior to hardening and temper workloads after hardening.
An India-based conglomerate recently contracted Can-Eng Furnaces International Limited to design, manufacture, install, and commission an aluminum automotive casting heat treatment system for its new greenfield North American expansion in South Carolina. The new system will service three distinct aluminum product groups with unique treatment cycles.
A global manufacturer of thermal-processing equipment recently shipped a custom Gruenberg bench oven to the movable machinery industry. The bench oven is rated for Class B operation per the NFPA 86 specifications. Thermal Product Solutions (TPS) designed this bench oven to be used in the customer’s testing and product development department to process various mechanical apparatuses affixed to a Ling Dynamic Electronic Shaker. The maximum temperature rating of this Class B oven is 1022°F (550°C) and the work chamber dimensions are 36” W x 36” D x 36” H. In addition, TPS delivered a Gruenberg cabinet oven to the research and development industry. This Class B oven will process up to 5 gallons of water per batch from 1500 lbs of metal powder. The maximum temperature rating of this Class B cabinet oven is 250° F and the work chamber dimensions are 48” W x 48” D x 48” H. Both Gruenberg ovens are constructed from a structural steel frame that supports the fully welded 304 stainless steel chamber liner and the exterior sheet metal.
Grievehas built a 1,250°F, horizontal airflow cabinet oven used for heat treating at the customer’s facility. With workspace dimensions of 38" by 38" by 38", it has 12"-thick insulated walls comprising 2" of 2,300°F ceramic blanket and 10" of 10 lb./cu. ft. density Rockwool.
A vacuum space simulation system was recently shipped to a company that manufactures equipment for space. Tenney Environmental designed this system to test ionic thruster chips for space vehicle systems. The simulator will allow the customer to test their products in-house, while replicating outer space conditions. The dual cryopump vacuum system is sized specifically to maintain the high vacuum while the thrusters are firing inside the vessel.
An industrial manufacturer recently purchased a custom car bottom furnace from LEWCO, based in Sandusky, Ohio. The electrically heated oven, which is rated for a maximum temperature of 1,300°F., is used for annealing steel parts, featuring a workspace of 72”W x 140”D x 90”H, and manufactured and designed to NFPA 86 “Class B” standards.

Liebherr-Aerospace Toulouse SAS, center of excellence for aerospace air management systems within the Liebherr Group, has obtained accreditation from NADCAP (National Aerospace and Defense Contractors Accreditation Program) for its Materials Testing Laboratory.
A leading provider of vacuum impregnation technology, Godfrey & Wing, passed its transition audit for ISO 9001:2015/IATF 16949 certification from Smithers Quality Assessments (SQA), an accredited third-party registrar. The IATF 16949:2016 certification is the recently published revision to ISO/TS 16949: 2009, one of the most widely used international standards in the automotive industry. The standard acts as a supplement to ISO 9001: 2015 for automotive quality management systems.
Bonnell Aluminum, a subsidiary of Tredegar Corporation also recently announced that its aluminum extrusion manufacturing facility in Newnan, Georgia, has achieved certification under IATF 16949:2016.
In January of 2018, Logik Precision Inc. (LPI), a CNC machining, water jet, EDM and welding/fabrication service provider primarily operating in the oil & gas industry, selected QMSC, which provides quality management consulting services and is the developer of QMS, to provide professional consulting services to transition the organization from ISO 9001:2008 to the current revision of 2015. QMSC performed gap audit, completed revisions to the quality management system, performed employee training, and represented LPI during the registrar audit which was conducted on July 11th and 12th. Logik Precision successfully demonstrated compliance and commitment to its quality program. The audit was closed with zero findings and no observations. QMSC will provide ongoing fractional Quality Director services to assist LPI with continuous improvement.
