Chinese Heat Treater Signs Agreement with ECM Technologies

“ECM Technologies, a subsidiary of the ECM Group, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Chinese heat treater Chun Yu, to open a Synergy Center in Shanghai. Shanghai Chun Yu Metal Heat Treatment, known as CYHT, is a customer of ECM Technologies. Geared with 3 different LPC systems from ECM Technologies, both companies agreed to cooperate on process development. CYHT is becoming the first demonstration center for ECM Technologies in China. This bilateral agreement will enable both parties to develop their activities in China around vacuum heat treatment technologies.”

RATH Mönchengladbach Opens Production Plant in Germany

International refractory manufacturer RATH opens new production plant

“The international refractory manufacturer RATH has been developing continuous oxide ceramic fibers as part of the HORIZON EUROPE project InVECOF (Innovative Value Chains for European Ceramic Oxide Fibers) for several years. A production plant for the manufacture of innovative oxide ceramic fibers has now been commissioned at the RATH Mönchengladbach site (Germany). In mid-October 2024, the company officially launched production of the ALTRA FLEX® oxide ceramic continuous fibers in K99 and M75 qualities, making it the first European supplier to offer a solution for composite material manufacturers and manufacturers and processors of heat-resistant fabrics. The new production facility will initially produce up to 10 tons of fibers per year.”

Marcegaglia Stainless Sheffield Partners with Primetals Technologies

Marcegaglia to equip all the production units of the minimill meltshop in Sheffield with automation systems from Primetals Technologies

“UK-based Marcegaglia Stainless Sheffield has partnered with Primetals Technologies to optimize production processes at its processes at its Sheffield minimill. The modernization project aims to double the plant’s annual production capacity from annual production capacity from 250,000 to 500,000 tonnes. Several intralogistics systems, process optimization solutions, technology packages and intelligent sensor systems will be installed in all production units of the in all production units of the melt shop, scrap yard and ladle tracking system.”

ECM Group Expands with Acquisition in Italy

/ MANUFACTURING HEAT TREAT NEWS, VACUUM FURNACES NEWS

The ECM Group, a provider of solutions and services for industrial heat treatment companies with a subsidiary based in North America, recently acquired Vacuum Service & Maintenance (Vacuum SM), an Italian company which specializes in the maintenance of industrial furnaces for vacuum heat treatment. This acquisition will enable the company to consolidate its European presence and improve its responsiveness by being closer to its client base.

Vacuum SM anticipates the benefit of support from ECM Group while keeping its independence under the management of Roberto Bartoli, Andrea Cantarini, and Lorenzo Tirloni. The company will begin training on the products of ECM Technologies, the Grenoble-based Group’s main subsidiary.

Merger Results in Heat Treatment Furnaces Manufacturing Division

ECM Group reorganizing into four distinct divisions

“The ECM Group is reinforcing its capital goods manufacturing business by bringing together several legal entities under the company ECM Technologies. This merger between ECM Technologies, ECM Greentech, and ECM Technologies Villard Bonnot creates a division dedicated to the manufacturing of innovative heat treatment furnaces. The aim of this merger is to better serve its customers and respond more effectively to market changes. It will enable the ECM Group to build up a veritable hub of skills and knowledge around its core areas of thermal engineering, gas management and atmospheres. This marks a first step towards realizing its ambition of becoming the world leader in vacuum heat treatment equipment, all technologies combined.”

Japanese Steel Giants Pursue Government Allocated Green Funding

Japanese steel producers apply for government green subsidy

“Two of the largest integrated steel producers in Japan, Nippon Steel and JFE Steel, have applied for government funding allocated through the new Green Transformation Promotion Act (GX) to advance research and development in decarbonizing operations. JFE Steel is seeking funds to build a new large electric arc furnace (EAF) to replace blast furnace No. 2 at West Japan Works (Kurashiki). The company expects the EAF to be commissioned between 2027-2028. Blast Furnace No. 2 at the plant underwent a re-lining in 2003. JFE usually performs such maintenance after about 25 years of operation, so the next one is due in 2028. However, JFE Steel hopes that the new electric arc furnace will be operational by then, so the unit can be shut down. West Japan Works currently operates three blast furnaces with a steel output of about 8Mt/yr.”

Contract Machinery Manufacturer Expands Capabilities With Vacuum Brazing Furnace, Sintering Press

“Tresky Automation announces the latest addition to its contract manufacturing machinery. Customers will now benefit from a state-of-the-art vacuum brazing furnace and a powerful sintering press with a maximum pressing force of up to 15 kN. The new equipment enables Tresky to offer additional manufacturing technologies, which is particularly beneficial for demanding applications in the fields of photonics, optoelectronics, hybrid bonding, microelectronics and power electronics. The new vacuum brazing furnace offers the possibility to produce material bonding under controlled conditions with nitrogen (N2) or formic acid (HCOOH). This process effectively reduces voids, as the vacuum allows air or process residues to escape during the preheating and melting phase of the solder. The result is virtually void- and flux-free solder joints that are characterized by high reliability.”

Technology Alliance Enables Growth in Refractory Products Manufacturing

The goal of the ambitious partnership is close collaboration in the development and manufacture of refractory products for glass melting plants in the glass industry. The two companies will be operating under the name ‘R² – THE GLASS FURNACE ALLIANCE.’ The alliance enables RATH to expand its technological expertise, as products manufactured by REFRATECHNIK will be developed in close collaboration with the research and development departments of both companies.”

Mercury Marine Launches Heat Treat Upgrades

HTD Size-PR LogoMercury Marine of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, recently launched a plan to upgrade its heat-treating capabilities with a move to the low-pressure carburization and high-pressure gas quench system. The new plan incorporates completely automated vacuum heat treating systems.

In the partnership with ECM Technologies, the Nano vacuum heat treating system (pictured above) incorporates 20 bar nitrogen gas quenching along with low pressure carburizing (aka vacuum carburizing). The Nano will operate several different carburizing, hardening, and spheroidizing processes simultaneously.

This change marks a departure from Mercury’s traditional atmospheric carburization and oil quench system while benefiting from advantages that come with vacuum processing:

  • Applies vacuum heat treating in lieu of traditional atmosphere (elimination of intergranular oxidation & highly repeatable process with consistent results)
  • Employs preventive maintenance planning, remote system status access, and facility information systems integration
  • Relocates heat treat from a secondary location to the clean, controlled environment of the machining centers
  • Converts to small batch processing principles to maximize process efficiency
  • State-of-the-art growth with ECM’s advanced system automation and robot capability with load building and breakdown
  • Controls downstream operations by matching incoming dunnage with exiting workpieces
  • Takes advantage of vapor and vacuum-based pre-cleaning technology to remove multiple machining lubricants
  • Incorporates cryogenic and tempering processes within the automated system

The system uses all CFC workload fixtures and ECM’s advanced automation fixture tracking to maintain a precise cycle count to know fixture life. For Mercury, this significantly reduces energy consumption and process cost per piece. Additionally, the vacuum process takes their heat treatment to a near-zero emissions for drivetrain components processed within the system.
