“ArcelorMittal Brasil has chosen Danieli Centro Met technology and equipment for a twin-ladle furnace station to be installed at the Tubarão integrated steel plant in Serra, Espirito Santo state, where 7+ Mt/yr of high-quality, flat carbon steel products are produced. The new twin-ladle furnace station will be placed in the melt-shop bay between converters and continuous casting machines to complete the refining area, remove sulphur contents and make quality adjustments to the steel bath, to produce USIBOR steel for automotive applications.”

TU Bergakademie Freiberg Opens Climate-Neutral Metallurgical Thermal Processing Center

“’Our goal is emission-free thermal processes, which we optimize through a closed loop system,’ says Professor Gotthard Wolf, head of the Foundry Institute at TU Bergakademie Freiberg. In order to get closer to this goal, two technologies have already been developed at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg that could replace the natural gas burners of the future. When using green electricity, the process step of melting, for example of aluminum, becomes completely CO2-free. These are a plasma-heated hot gas flare and an inductively heated got gas flare. ‘Each of the electrically operated flares could be replaced in existing melting furnaces without the mostly medium-sized foundry companies having to invest in alternative furnaces,’ explains Professor Wolf.”

Tenova’s NextGen® System Enhances Dongkuk Steel Mill Furnace Efficiency

“Dongkuk Steel Mill Co. Ltd., a leading steelmaker in Korea, has recently contracted Tenova Goodfellow, Inc, a subsidiary of Tenova, a leading developer and provider of sustainable solutions for the green transition of the metals industry, to improve its furnace efficiency. The scope of the contract involves the supply and installation of Tenova’s NextGen® System at Dongkuk’s Incheon Plant in Dong-gu, Incheon, Republic of Korea. The Next-Gen® System, tailored for Dongkuk Steel’s 120-ton AC shaft furnace, incorporates advanced hardware and temperature sensors for off-gas measurement which include two sampling stations and a central cabinet.”

New Tin Plate Complex from Partnership Between Danieli and Habaş Group

"The facility, with a capacity of 900,000 tons per year, will produce a diverse range of steel grades, including T1 to T4 and DR7 to DR10. Among its offerings are 250,000 tons of tinplate, 150,000 tons of thin, continuous annealed cold-rolled coil, and 500,000 tons of semi-finished products. The complex comprises four crucial process areas: electrolytic cleaning, cold rolling and tempering, electrolytic tinning, and continuous annealing.”

SMS Group Partners with Turkish Plant Operator Kardemir to Digitize Blast Furnace 5

Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) Develops New Process for Sustainable Pig Iron Production

“By integrating the blast furnace and coking plant as well as the consistent recycling of process gases and heat, CO₂ emissions in steel production can be reduced.” (Source: heat processing.com)

"Around eight percent of global CO₂ emissions are caused by the steel industry. Professor Olaf Deutschmann from the Institute for Technical Chemistry and Polymer Chemistry (ITCP) at KIT is of the opinion that this must change quickly. In the long term, thanks to new hydrogen technologies, there is a climate-neutral perspective, but it will still be a few years before sufficient green hydrogen is available worldwide and newly built plants go into operation.”

A Contract in Russia

“The capacity of each reheating furnace will be 465 tons per hour of slabs. The new furnaces, which will replace four existing ones, will ensure high slab-heating quality and reliability. Fuel consumption will be reduced and energy savings will be up to 15%.”

Steel Dynamics Expands Rolling Mill, Includes 3-MW Induction Furnace

A steel producer based in Fort Wayne, Indiana, recently announced the expansion of their rolling mill, which will include a 3-MW induction furnace to heat the stock coming from the existing mill.

Steel Dynamics USA announced the expansion at their Columbia City, Indiana, location. Among other equipment being added are a 70-m conveyor connecting the existing medium section mill to the new spooler line, six housingless SHS 180 roller stands, complete with quick stand-changing table, a 6-pass Delta-type finishing block driven by a low-voltage- 2.5-MW motor and finishing services.

SDI and Danieli teams studied a temporary removable solution, steel support structure to support the existing furnace-exit roller table, allowing the execution of the Billet Welder concrete foundation with only minor impact to the MSM (Medium Section Mill) production schedule.

Steel Operation Expands with Micromill Technology

A producer of steel and related products headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, recently selected the MI.DA® Micromill technology of Pennsylvania-based steel distributor Danieli to expand its presence in the Midwest with a new operation to be built in Sedalia, Missouri.

Nucor Corporation contracted Danieli to design the plant to produce in excess of 350,000 short tons per year of straight rebar products, in sizes, grades and custom lengths. The design of the mill will allow for the future installation of a spooling line for the production of twist-free, easy-to-store and transport, compact heavy coils up to 11,000 lbs.

The mill is scheduled to be in operation by the third quarter of 2019. It will be the third such mill in the USA alone and will join eight other MI.DA® Micromills with capacities ranging from 300,000 to 800,000 tons/year already (or soon to be) in operation worldwide.
