  • Chromalox has announced the opening of its new sales and operations office in Korea.
  • Thomas “Tucker” Hamling II was recently appointed to the position of sales manager with ZIRCAR Refractory Composites, Inc., responsible for domestic technical sales while also providing technical guidance to the company’s customers.
  • A definitive agreement has been reached between Tenaris S.A. and PAO TMK, a Russian company and manufacturer of steel pipe, to acquire 100% of the shares of PAO TMK’s wholly owned U.S. subsidiary IPSCO Tubulars, Inc.
  • Beaumont Machine has relocated to a new larger manufacturing facility, still in the Cincinnati area, to expand the machine line for components for new markets such as semiconductor materials processing and land-based power generation, particularly turbine blades.
  • The American Foundry Society is pleased to welcome Tom Dore as Technical Director. Formerly a vice president at AFS Corporate Member Alu-Bra Foundry, Dore has years of hands-on experience in foundry operations, including plant engineering, heat treating, sand casting, customer quality, and sales.
  • Mike Winkelmann, an industry veteran, has been appointed the new General Manager of the fast-growing Mechanical Services division of Plibrico Company, LLC.
  • Paulo recently announced three leadership changes to the Operations team. Kyle Moore has been promoted to Plant Manager of the St. Louis Division, Tim Mohr has been promoted to Director of Strategic Programs, and Tee Rassieur has been promoted to Vice President Operations.

  • A Tier 1 automotive manufacturer recently chose Can-Eng Furnaces International Ltd to design and commission a high-capacity, heat-treatment system, providing T-6 and T-7 processing capabilities for lightweight aluminum High Pressure Die Casting (HPDC) automotive components.
  • A medical device manufacturer required an oven to preheat an aluminum mold for a silicone part that was to be filled and cured in the next manufacturing step and contracted with Despatch. The company develops innovative products that improve patient outcomes by enabling minimally invasive surgery.
  • A company that requires the heat treating of automotive parts in baskets recently purchased the No. 1040, a 2200°F (1204°C), inert atmosphere pit furnace, from Grieve Corporation.

Kudos Chatter

  • Dr. Valery Rudnev, FASM IFHTSE Fellow, the Director of Science & Technology at Inductoheat Inc., was recently appointed this year’s speaker at the Woodside Lecture of the Detroit Chapter of ASM. The Woodside Lecture is named for William P. Woodside, the founder of ASM in Detroit (1913). Dr. Rudnev will be discussing “Recent Theoretical and Practical Novelties in Induction Heat Treatment.”
  • Saint-Gobain recently announced that Neha Dave, business manager of Specialty Materials at Saint-Gobain Ceramics & Plastics, has been named a 2019 STEP Ahead Emerging Leader by The Manufacturing Institute. Additionally, the institute is recognizing Silham El Kasmi, operational director for Saint-Gobain Crystals in France, as a 2019 STEP Ahead Award Honoree. Dave and El Kasmi were recently honored during an Awards Dinner Gala in Washington, D.C.
  • The world’s largest wind-turbine blade—351 feet (107 meters) long—has been manufactured by LM Wind Power in Cherbourg, France, as part of a GE Renewable Energy Haliade-X 12-MW offshore turbine. The blade is comprised of multiple thin layers of glass-and-carbon fibers with wood, fused together with resin.
  • In addition, the largest rotary tilting furnace in the world has been manufactured and supplied by GHI Smart Furnaces, in a project subsidized by the Basque Government in which the company has worked together with Befesa and Tecnalia. This is the second time the company has reached a world record.

  • The Grieve Corporation mourns the loss of its longtime president, P.J. “Pat” Calabrese, who died on February 17, 2018, in Lake Forest, Illinois, at the age of 90. Pat was president of Grieve from 1958 until his retirement in 2008, having worked closely with the company’s founder, Price Grieve. Pat was born in Chicago, graduated in 1949 from the University of Illinois with a BS in Mechanical Engineering, and was awarded that school’s prestigious Distinguished Alumni Award in 2001. He also held a number of positions with various industrial, business, and Catholic charitable organizations. Pat began his career at Grieve in 1958 as National Sales Manager, becoming President in 1968 and finally Chairman in 2006, following the death of Mr. Grieve. During his tenure as President, the company grew steadily to become a global supplier of heat processing equipment for virtually every industry in every industrialized country in the world.
  • Advanced Heat Treat Corp (AHT), recently announced the appointment of Chad Clark as plant manager of the Monroe, Michigan, facility. He is well-versed in many aspects of AHT’s business, having been with the company for 15 years. Clark will lead all Monroe, Michigan, operations and guide the strategic direction of the plant. He will also be actively communicating with customers and leading the facility’s project management.
  • The National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) announced that Devinder Ahuja, senior vice president and chief financial officer (CFO), Novelis Inc., has been named to the NAM Board of Directors. Founded in 1895, the NAM is the largest industrial trade association in the United States with 14,000 members. “I am honored to join the NAM Board to advocate policies that will ensure our continued growth and success as manufacturers,” said Ahuja. “Policymakers need to understand how their actions affect the more than 12 million men and women employed in manufacturing.”

  • An inert atmosphere floor furnace was recently built to specifications by The Grieve Corporation. The No. 854 is a special high-temperature, 2200°F electrically-heated, inert atmosphere floor furnace being used for various heat treating applications at the customer’s facility. Workspace dimensions measure 24” wide x 48” deep x 24” high. Special inert atmosphere construction on No. 854 includes a continuously welded outer shell, high-temperature door gasket, sealed heater terminal boxes, inert atmosphere inlet, outlet, and flowmeter.
  • An India-based conglomerate recently awarded a contract to Can-Eng Furnaces International Limited to design, manufacture, install, and commission an aluminum automotive casting heat treatment system for their new green field North American expansion in South Carolina, chosen largely due to specific demands of the company’s new line of die-cast, lightweight aluminum automotive components.
  • An auto parts manufacturer has ordered a continuous controlled atmosphere brazing line for battery coolers from SECO/WARWICK. This is RAAL S.C.’s third line purchased from western Pennsylvania-based vacuum furnace supplier. RAAL is a manufacturer of complete cooling systems and brazed heat exchangers made of aluminum alloys and stainless steel: radiators, oil coolers, air coolers, condensers and evaporators, designed for agricultural, construction, industrial equipment and automotive applications.
  • An American commercial heat treating plant recently purchased a horizontal, high-pressure vacuum furnace from REMIX of Poland. P&L Heat Treating, Inc., of Youngstown, Ohio, began production with the furnace, enhancing the company’s capabilities in the heat treatment of aluminum extrusion dies used in the automotive industry, as well as parts for aviation, nuclear, and other industries. A unique design feature of the REMIX Vacuum is its four-zone system of cooling nozzles which facilitates precise control of cooling gases into the work zone. and allows optimized positive pressure quenching of all load sizes.
  • A general purpose box furnace was recently delivered to a manufacturer of precision metal stampings in the U.S. Midwest. Model HL7-M24, built and sold by Lucifer Furnaces, has chamber dimensions of 12”H x 18”W x 24”D and heats to 2300°F. The furnace, which is part of Lucifer’s standard, general purpose, Series 7000 box furnace lines, will be used to heat treat D2 and A2 steel under air atmosphere.
  • A Greek aluminum producer recently ordered a four-stand aluminum tandem hot finishing mill for its plant near Athens. ElvalHalcor S.A., the newly merged business of Elval Hellenic Aluminium Industry S.A. and Halcor Metal Works S.A., will boost its output of prime aluminum flat-rolled products at its Oinofyta facility with the new line from SMS Group. This investment allows for the increase of ElvalHalcor’s supply for industrial, transportation and architectural applications and sets the base for expansion in the automotive and aerospace sectors. Start of production of the new hot rolling line will be in 2020.

Kudos Chatter

  • Deltech Furnaces, Inc. recently announced that it has achieved ISO 9001:2015 certification for the quality management system implemented at its Denver, Colo., location. The scope of Deltech’s certification includes the “design and manufacture of electric laboratory and production scale furnaces and related control systems.

Heat Treat Equipment Purchases — Recent Activity

Multiple transactions involving the contracting, purchasing, selling, shipment and delivery of heat treat systems, equipment, or services have taken place over the past several weeks; here are some we hope will be of interest to Heat Treat Today readers.

  1. (Automotive Heat Treat News) A Chinese steel manufacturer of parts for the automotive industry, Baosteel's Zhanjiang integrated steel production complex, opened with Fives' Stein Digiflex furnaces for a 700kt/yr continuous annealing line and a 270kt/yr galvanizing line for a 1,550mm wide cold rolling mill.
  2. (Manufacturing Heat Treat News) Spanish heavy industry manufacturer Forjas Iraeta Heavy Industry, S.L. (GRI Group), contracted a 30 ton/hour walking beam furnace to add to an existing flange production mill. German metals SMS Group launched the project, which is to install furnace technology for proper and optimal reheating of a wide range of products: the charge will include blooms from 200 to 500 millimeters square and round blooms from 300 to 700 millimeters in diameter, in lengths between three and five meters.

  3. (Manufacturing Heat Treat News) In addition, SMS Group recently received a contract for a continuous hot-dip galvanizing line for high-strength steel grades to be supplied to Shougang Jingtang United Iron & Steel Co., Ltd., China. This is the sixth strip processing line to be installed in this works on Caofeidian Island, a man-made island offshore the Chinese province of Hebei. The line will produce 360,000 tons of hot-dip galvanized steel strip, including high-strength grades with tensile strengths of up to 1,350 MPa.
  4. (Manufacturing Heat Treat News) Two electrically heated Pacemaker integral quench furnaces have been shipped by Lindberg/MPH, based in Riverside, Michigan, to be used for carburizing and hardening applications.
  5. (Manufacturing Heat Treat News) Lindberg/MPH has also shipped to an electronic components manufacturer a 1200°F single-zone tube furnace to be used for annealing, ashing, carbon firing, ceramic firing, hardening, sintering, solution treating, stress relieving, and other heat treating applications.
  6. (Aerospace Heat Treat News) Lindberg/MPH announced the shipment of an electrically heated gas nitriding pit furnace for a leading aerospace supplier. The pit furnace system performs a two-stage nitriding process to achieve high surface hardness on A11 and H13 steel parts.
  7. (Manufacturing Heat Treat News) An electrically heated, steam atmosphere, pit furnace has been shipped by Lindberg/MPH to an engineered components manufacturer. The equipment will be used with a steam generator for steam treating tools steels.
  8. (Automotive Heat Treat News) An automotive supplier is the recipient of a fourth Lindberg/MPH transaction, a multi-chamber, electrically heated hot stamping furnace to be used to preheat steel blanks for hot stamping structural automotive components. 
  9. (Automotive Heat Treat News) Can-Eng Furnaces recently completed commissioning an electrically heated furnace line addition to a leading bearing manufacturer’s existing production line. Responsible for producing planet shafts and pump vane products, the line now features a compact 1,000 lb/hr atmosphere temper and soluble oil system for rust prevention.
  10. (Automotive Heat Treat News) A Montreal-based manufacturer of advanced plasma processes received an order for the sale of a second DROSRITE™ Furnace System to a North American automobile parts manufacturer. PyroGenesis Canada Inc. developed the patented salt-free, cost-effective, sustainable process for maximizing metal recovery from dross, a waste generated in the metallurgical industry.

Auto Bearing Manufacturer Adds Mesh Belt Furnace System

A global automotive corporation’s American-based bearing division placed an order for a mesh belt furnace system for heat treating thrust races, retainer/cages, and washers. The new, CQI-9 compliant production line features built-in flexibility that allows for both neutral hardening and carburizing. Included with the system are an atmosphere controlled hardening furnace, salt quench, two-stage post-quench washing system, salt reclamation unit, temper furnace salt holding tank, and Level 2 SCADA system. The electrically heated system utilizes loading combinations on its belt to meet production requirements while achieving the customer’s required low residence times for the system’s hardener and quench.

Furnace Builders Compare Operational Benchmarks

Niagara Falls, Ontario

Heat treat industry veterans Wally Bamford, Chairman of HARPER INTERNATIONAL and founding partner of CAN-ENG,  along with William R. Jones, CEO of the Solar Atmospheres group of companies, discussed a cooperative exchange of business benchmarks between Can-Eng, Harper International, and Solar Manufacturing, Inc. The purpose of this innovative business data exchange was to review operating parameters such as cost of materials, engineering and manufacturing labor rates, sales, marketing, R&D, and other cost centers.  Since each of the companies is in the furnace manufacturing business, yet not competitors, it was agreed that an exchange of information would be helpful in improving each companies’ operations and identifying efficiencies.  The most recent management team meeting took place in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada, where the photo associated with this release was taken.

Can-Eng Manufactures Rotary Furnace for Weber

Can-Eng Furnaces International Limited has been contracted to design, manufacture and commission a rotary furnace system for the heating and hot working of titanium and alloy billets and preformed shapes for Weber Metals Inc. of Paramount, California – Long Beach Facility. Weber Metals is a subsidiary of Otto Fuchs KG of Meinerzhagen, Germany, and an operating unit of the Otto Fuchs Aerospace Group.
This large diameter rotary furnace is a part of Weber Metals’ 60,000-t press expansion project. The 60,000-t press will allow Weber Metals to manufacture larger and lighter forgings utilizing more advanced materials and will incorporate the latest in green technology to reduce waste, energy consumption and increase efficiency. The new facility will house the largest aerospace forging press in the Americas making some of the world’s largest monolithic forging components.

Automotive Supplier in Alabama Purchases Heat Treatment System from Can -Eng Furnaces

CAN-ENG Furnaces International Limited has been contracted by a large Canadian-based Tier 1 Automotive Supplier located in Alabama to design, manufacture and commission an automated T-7 Heat Treatment System for the processing of high integrity aluminum automotive structural castings. CAN-ENG is a global expert in the design of thermal processing solutions for high pressure die castings (HPDC) and aluminum automotive structural components.  CAN-ENG’s technology was chosen for this new light-weighting project because it offers inherent part handling features that reduce floor space requirements and energy consumption. The technology also provides predictable mechanical properties and maintains the dimensional stability of the casting.

The T-7 cell includes Robotic Handling, a Solution and Age Furnace with CAN-ENG’s Precision Air Quench (PAQ ™) technology, and controls integrated into a Level II SCADA system.  CAN-ENG’s PAQ™ system offers a unique combination of recirculating air chambers, distribution nozzles, dampers and directional ductwork.  Analysis of CFD modelling by CAN-ENG’s R and D Center ensures that the Precision Air Quench System (PAQ™) delivers controlled quench media to the casting, leading to repeatable and uniform mechanical properties and accurate dimensional results.  CAN-ENG’s T-7 heat treatment system is integrated with up and down stream processing operations, reducing W.I.P inventories.  It is scheduled to be commissioned in the summer of 2016 with a second phase to follow in 2017.

Heat Treat Expansion Complete at McGinnis Rolled Rings

 McInnes Rolled Rings has completed an $8 million, 25,000-square-foot expansion to its current manufacturing facility.  The addition expands its present heat treat size capabilities by providing the ability to quench and temper forgings up to 144 inches in diameter. With separate high agitation water and polymer quench tanks, this new state-of-the-art bay will significantly expand the daily tonnage capacity to ensure the fastest delivery times available in the industry.

McInnes contracted with Can-Eng Furnaces Intl. Ltd. to design and install the most advanced technology to process large diameter product. The furnace & quench tank designs are augmented by a customized material handling system by Dango & Dienthal Hollerbach GmbH capable of processing loads up to 25 tons.  The system’s fast transfer from furnace to quench tank provides optimal and repeatable process controls.

“This new bay nearly doubles our quenched and tempered offerings to the power transmission industry and adds the ability to solution anneal large diameter stainless steel rings. Also, the addition of water quenching improves our ability to meet the high property demands of the custom flange markets,” said Shawn O’Brien, VP Sales & Marketing.

The expanded heat treat operation will officially begin service on March 1, 2016.
