U.S. Steel Acquires Interest in Arkansas Steel Company, First Step Toward Consolidation

A leading integrated steel producer headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, announced a joint venture partnership agreement under which it has taken the first step toward acquiring an Arkansas-based steel manufacturer.

Big River Steel, which operates a LEED-certified Flex Mill™ in northeast Arkansas, will expand U.S. Steel’s technological capability and geographic presence through this agreement. U.S. Steel has purchased 49.9% ownership interest with a call option to acquire the remaining 50.1% over the next four years.

The Big River flat-rolled mill has advanced technology that allows it to produce a wide product spectrum, including advanced automotive steels and electrical steels, and provide high-quality products and services to customers in the automotive, energy, construction and agricultural industries. Big River’s recently announced Phase II-A expansion is expected to double the mill’s hot-rolled steel production capacity to 3.3 million tons annually.

“Our new partnership with Big River is designed to accelerate our strategy to offer our customers the ‘best of both’ by bringing together the capabilities of integrated and mini-mill steel production,” said David B.   • Patrick J. DeCourcy, who has served as Allegheny Technologies Incorporated’s Senior Vice President, Finance and Chief Financial Officer since 2013, recently announced plans to retire. To ensure a smooth leadership transition, he will remain in his current role until his successor is appointed and will retire from ATI on March 31, 2020.
  • A leading manufacturer of products used in the transmission, distribution, and measurement of water in North America, Mueller Water Products, recently announced plans to build a new, state-of-the-art foundry in Decatur, Illinois. According to Mueller, this facility is expected to be one of the largest finished goods brass foundries in the world.
  • Jerry Bunch has recently joined Pelican Wire as a Design Engineer II, and Larry Brindise has been hired as IT Development Leader. Bunch will be reviewing production processes, ensuring technical oversight to manufacturing steps and working to support the company-wide ‘continuous improvement’ program. Brindise comes to Pelican Wire with some knowledge of the company, as he has previously served Pelican Wire as a professional software consultant. He comes on-board full-time to lead an ongoing ERP project and will continue to develop and implement software solutions to improve the entire customer lifecycle process.
  • It has been announced that Opti-Tech Scientific, a leading Canadian supplier of scientific equipment, will represent Buehler, an ITW Company, in Canada. Opti-Tech Scientific specializes in optical/digital microscopy, metallography, and hardness testing.
  • Allegheny Technologies Incorporated announced it completed the sale of its Cast Products business unit to Consolidated Precision Products Corp. (CPP) of Cleveland, OH.
  • A partnership has been launched between leading Enterprise Artificial Intelligence® provider Noodle.ai and SMS group, which digitalizes plant and equipment used in steel and nonferrous-metals production and processing, to jointly further optimize the world’s first learning steel mill for Arkansas-based Big River Steel. To help Big River Steel conserve resources and control energy output, the joint solution was created by implementing Noodle.ai’s learning algorithms into SMS group’s X-Pact® MES 4.0. Noodle.ai was able to seamlessly leverage the fact that SMS group’s X-Pact® MES 4.0 was engrained into the steel mill’s IT environment and into their SaaS (Software as a Service) applications. The new end solutions digitize applications throughout every stage of the steelmaking process – starting at the liquid phase all the way to strip finishing.
  • Centorr Vacuum Industries announced it has shipped its new Sintervac AM™ furnace for the debind and sintering of additively manufactured parts for a leading 3D/Additive Manufacturing company.
  • A customer needed the lower sidewalls of its forge furnace shotcreted with 90,000 lbs of material. Onex Inc posted a video of the job on Twitter.
  • The Slovakian company U.S. Steel Košice – one of the largest integrated steel producers in Central Europe – placed a major order for the supply of an annealing and coating line (ACL) for dynamo steel strips to Tenova LOI Thermprocess, a worldwide leader in heat treatment lines and furnaces located in Essen, Germany.
  • The Chemical Coaters Association International (CCAI) recently announced the second annual Women in Finishing FORUM will be held at the Embassy Suites South Bend at Notre Dame from May 6-8, 2020.
  • Metal heat treater Exactatherm, based in Mississaugua, Ontario, has been awarded Nadcap Merit status for heat treatment.
  • The International Titanium Association (ITA), Denver, Colo., announces that metallurgist George L. Durfee has been named the recipient of the ITA’s 2019 Lifetime Achievement Award. A member of ASM International, Mr. Durfee is a metallurgist who built his career around pioneering applied research projects for the titanium industry at forging company Wyman-Gordon Co.

North American Steel Company Adds New Furnace, Expands Facility

As part of a second expansion to their facility, a North American steel company plans to install a second electric arc furnace with the assistance of a group of companies internationally active in plant construction and mechanical engineering for the steel and nonferrous metals industry.

North American steel producer Big River Steel (BRS) recently commissioned SMS Group with the expansion of its steel plant in Osceola, Arkansas. SMS Group will supply BRS with additional mechanical equipment, electrical and automation systems, and digitalization, which the group reports will increase the plant’s annual output.

“I have purchased several technologically advanced steel production facilities from SMS over the past twenty years and I am fully confident that SMS group will again deliver a high-quality mill that sets the standard in terms of product capability, energy efficiency and environmental sustainability,” commented David Stickler, CEO of Big River Steel.

Following this second expansion of their facility, the steel plant will house two electric arc furnaces and two twin-ladle furnaces. In addition, Big River Steel commissioned Systems Spray Cooled for the installation of furnace cooling equipment at Big River’s Osceola facility, including furnace sidewall, roof, elbow, and off-gas duct work. SMS reports that installing an additional gas cleaning system will ensure compliance with environmental legislation. A second strand, a second tunnel furnace, and a further downcoiler will also be added to the Big River Steel’s CSP® plant, which reportedly produces coils up to 1,930 millimeters wide.

Big River Steel produces high-quality steels, including tube grade sheet for pipeline construction, silicon steels for a wide variety of energy and electric motor applications, and advanced high-strength steels for the U.S. automotive industry.

The hot coils produced in the CSP® plant are processed into high-grade cold strip in the downstream coupled pickling line/tandem cold mill. The continuous galvanizing line (CGL) will receive an additional coiler. For all the newly installed plants, SMS group is going to supply the mechanical equipment and the X-Pact® electrical and automation systems, including level 3.

Also in the second construction stage, the PQA® (Product Quality Analyzer) system developed by SMS group company MET/Con will be a central module of the process automation system. By capturing and evaluating all relevant production data on a continuous basis, PQA® monitors, documents and assures the product quality down to the finished cold strip along the complete production process. The system uses stored rules defined on the basis of expert knowledge to assess the coil quality in a semi-automatic procedure and, based on these assessments, takes “ship” or “block” decisions for the downstream processing of the strip or its dispatch.

This system then sends instructions for action to the operators while production continues in order to make them aware of any onset of irregularities within the production process and suggest countermeasures to be taken. This allows the operators to predictively intervene in the process before an incident becomes a problem, reducing the occurrence of failures along the production process which otherwise might have resulted in poor quality and downtimes. Over time, the system is intended to provide higher yield while increasing product quality.

Steelmaker Commissions EAFs in Plant Expansion

A major U.S. steel producer recently commissioned an international engineering group with the expansion of its steel plant in Osceola, Arkansas, including the supply of electric arc furnaces and other furnace lines, increasing the plant’s annual output to about 3 million tons of steel.

Since commissioning of the new mill in 2017, Big River Steel has been producing high-quality steels, including tube grade sheet for pipeline construction, silicon steels for a wide variety of energy and electric motor applications, and advanced high-strength steels for the U.S. automotive industry.

SMS group will supply BRS with mechanical equipment, electrical and automation systems, and digitalization. After completion of the next expansion, the steel plant will have two electric arc furnaces and two twin-ladle furnaces. Installation of an additional gas cleaning system will ensure compliance with strict environmental legislation. Big River Steel’s CSP® plant produces up to 1,930 millimeters wide coils, making it one of the widest CSP® plants in the world. Arkansas Flex Mill™ to Double Capacity with $1.2 Billion Investment

 

An Arkansas-based steel producer for automotive and electrical markets recently announced the expansion of its LEED-certified facility, doubling its hot-rolled steel production capacity to 3.3 million tons annually.

In addition, the expansion at Big River Steel’s Flex Mill™, which began operations in early 2017, will facilitate the company’s ability to produce even higher grades of electrical steel, demand for which is expected to increase with continued focus on energy efficiency and the increase in hybrid and electric vehicle sales.

“Our $1.2 billion expansion will further cement Big River Steel’s position as a global leader in terms of advanced manufacturing and environmental stewardship,” said Dave Stickler, Big River Steel’s chief executive officer. “Announcing this investment less than 18 months after beginning operations is a testament to the hard work and great success of the men and women on our team.”

Engineering efforts are already underway with SMS group GmbH, the primary technology provider, and major construction activity will begin later this year and continue for approximately 24 months. In addition to doubling its hot-rolled steel production and enhancing its electrical steel capability, Big River is also contemplating the installation of a next-generation coating line focused on automotive applications.
