“’Our goal is emission-free thermal processes, which we optimize through a closed loop system,’ says Professor Gotthard Wolf, head of the Foundry Institute at TU Bergakademie Freiberg. In order to get closer to this goal, two technologies have already been developed at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg that could replace the natural gas burners of the future. When using green electricity, the process step of melting, for example of aluminum, becomes completely CO2-free. These are a plasma-heated hot gas flare and an inductively heated got gas flare. ‘Each of the electrically operated flares could be replaced in existing melting furnaces without the mostly medium-sized foundry companies having to invest in alternative furnaces,’ explains Professor Wolf.”

Fringe Friday: ArcelorMittal Dofasco Lowers Carbon Footprint

HTD Size-PR LogoSometimes our editors find items that are not exactly "heat treat" but do deal with interesting developments in one of our key markets: aerospace, automotive, medical, energy, or general manufacturing. To celebrate getting to the “fringe” of the weekend, Heat Treat Today presents today’s Heat Treat Fringe Friday press release: an agreement for the supply of a direct reduction system for ArcelorMittal Dofasco, in North America.

ArcelorMittal Dofasco chooses Tenova for the supply of a hydrogen-ready 2,500,000 tons/year ENERGIRON® direct reduction system, to be located in Hamilton, Canada. This system will be incorporated in the decarbonization plan through a direct reduced iron (DRI) program.

"While [the project] involves installing new technology and equipment, the investment is really about people and planet," explains Ron Bedard, president and CEO of ArcelorMittal. "It will help our customers lower their carbon footprint, ensuring they deliver low carbon products to consumers. It will create and protect green careers in advanced manufacturing here at Dofasco. It will improve the work environment for our operations, maintenance, and technology teams. And it will significantly reduce the environmental impact of steelmaking in Hamilton.”

The manufacturer will transition away from the blast furnace (basic oxygen furnace steelmaking production route) to the DRI-electric arc furnace production route. The technology has the capability to capture and use CO2, reducing overall CO2 emissions and providing an additional revenue stream for the system operations. The system will produce hot DRI pellets that will be processed via the proven HYTEMP, a pneumatic transport system, to a new EAF mill to be located next to the ENERGIRON® system.

European Steel Acquisitions Set To Double Metals Production Capacity

A British-owned international metals and industrial group, specializing in commodities, metals recycling, manufacture of steel, aluminum and engineering products recently announced a conditional agreement to purchase four European steel plants.

The Liberty Group, which is part of the GFG Alliance will acquire ArcelorMittal’s major integrated works at Galati in Romania and Ostrava in the Czech Republic, along with rolling mills at Skopje in Macedonia and Piombino in Italy.

Jay Hambro, chief investment officer of the GFG Alliance

Adding these major steel hubs more than doubles Liberty’s global metal manufacturing capacity in the U.K. as a steel and aluminum supplier to the automotive, aviation and specialist engineering sectors and in Australia supplying steel for building and infrastructure. The Group also makes steel in the USA for the automotive and other sectors.

The four sites in the package have a combined rolling capacity of around 8m tonnes a year and would give Liberty the ability to supply a full range of finished steels, including plate, hot rolled coil, cold rolled coil, galvanized sheet, tin plate, bar, wire rod, and rail. The plants serve domestic and wider European markets, including automotive, construction, industrial machinery, and oil and gas sectors.

“Following relevant approvals for this transaction, the GFG Alliance will have a number of new global hubs in Europe,” said Jay Hambro, chief investment officer of the GFG Alliance. “These steel operations are high-performing, profitable assets with modern equipment, excellent transport connections to key markets and high-skilled workforces. There is huge potential for expansion, further modernization and the application of GFG’s GREENSTEEL strategy.

Quebec Steelmaker Invests in Heat Treatment Equipment

A major Quebec steel producer recently announced that investments of nearly CAD$70 million (US$54.2 million) will include replacing heat treatment equipment at two locations.

François Perras, chief executive officer, ArcelorMittal Long Products Canada

ArcelorMittal Long Products Canada will replace two reheating furnaces at its Contrecoeur-East wire rod mill and its Contrecoeur-West bar mill. These new furnaces, which aim to increase the company’s rolling capacity by 100,000 tons, will enable greater productivity, optimal energy use, and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. The work should extend until the first half of 2020.

“We are renewing ArcelorMittal’s commitment to Quebec,” said François Perras, chief executive officer, ArcelorMittal Long Products Canada. “Our choice to invest in the acquisition of high-performance equipment will help us accelerate our move towards high-value-added steel production, particularly for the automotive and construction industries.”

EAF, Rod Mill Acquired with Steelworks Purchase

A 540,000-ton-a-year electric arc furnace and 680,000-ton-a-year rod mill serving the construction and automotive markets will re-start melting and rolling in Spring 2018 following the acquisition of a Georgetown, South Carolina, steelworks facility.

Sanjeev Gupta, executive chairman of the GFG Alliance

Liberty House, part of the global metals, industrials, and energy group, the GFG Alliance, recently completed the purchase of the 600,000-sq.-ft. rod and wire mill from ArcelorMittal, the first in a series of North American acquisitions and new projects targeted by the group founded and run by British industrialist, Sanjeev Gupta.

The company is already in discussions regarding the acquisition of other major US steel assets and new greenfield projects, which it expects to announce in the coming year.

Liberty House, will initially re-hire 125 former employees at Georgetown and then build the workforce to 250 in the medium-term. The group is targeting a major share of the US market for home-produced wire rod, demand for which is projected to grow substantially during 2018.

The steelworks was a pivotal part of the state’s industrial infrastructure for nearly 70 years until it was shuttered in 2015. Liberty House now aims to restore its role in the steelmaking industry and bring hundreds of skilled jobs back to the plant and to the local and state economy.

Under an agreement with the United Steelworkers, the company expects key roles on the furnace, casters and rolling mill to be filled by experienced former employees of the plant and it is also in discussion with Georgetown Council about training programs to prepare workers for the industry.

“Securing the Georgetown furnace and mill is a major milestone for us, marking our first major step in the USA,” said Sanjeev Gupta, executive chairman of the GFG Alliance said. “The melting and rolling facilities here give us a formidable entry to the American market and provide a strong platform for expansion. We see major prospects for the metals industry here.”
