Refractory Technology Launched To Address Kiln Interruptions

Refractory technology for use in many industrial applications and all types of industrial furnaces

“Calderys is pleased to announce the launch of CALDE® FD (Fast Dry), a refractory technology that can be used in many industrial applications and offers superior efficiency and reliability for all types of industrial furnaces. Calderys is constantly striving to improve its processes in order to offer its customers the best possible solutions. In the field of cementitious refractory concretes, the drying out of the furnaces is a critical challenge due to its duration, regardless of the industrial process. Once the refractory lining has been installed, the kilns are unusable for up to several days to allow drying out, which inevitably leads to an interruption in operations.

Calderys is directly addressing this by expanding its product offering with the CALDE® FD (Fast Dry) range. This solution has been designed to integrate seamlessly into the Calderys product range. Crucially, the CALDE® FD products offer customers increased reliability, reduced downtime, streamlined processes and improvements in CO2 reduction. This expanded product range has been developed in line with Calderys’ ESG objectives to support customers with their energy transition requirements.”

UBQ Furnace Installation Expands Production Capacity

Several universal batch quench (UBQ) furnaces were purchased and installed over the course of 2018 to support the growth in business of a commercial heat treating operation located in Richland Hills, Texas.

Modern Heat Treat, which provides services such as alloy quench and temper flame hardening and carburizing to the metalworking industry, added the UBQ furnaces along with companion equipment to its installed base, increasing capacity of the equipment already in operation at the facility. AFC-Holcroft , a member of the Aichelin Group, fulfilled the orders for Modern Heat Treat, which has benefitted from the modular, flexible UBQ design with the ability to add new equipment to their facility incrementally.

Tracy Dougherty, VP Sales, AFC-Holcroft

“These large capacity UBQ furnaces provide Modern Heat Treat with a distinct advantage in the market since the equipment is scalable to meet their need for flexibility,” said Tracy Dougherty, Vice President of Sales at AFC-Holcroft. “AFC-Holcroft is proud to be a part of the continued expansion and growth of Modern Heat Treat.”

Modern Heat Treat operates a 25,000 sq ft facility with 57 employees and over 40 pieces of furnace equipment.

PA Heat Treater Expands Production Capability with UBQ, UBT Furnaces

A precision parts heat treating company based in western Pennsylvania recently invested in a universal batch quench (UBQ) integral quench furnace and two 1400°F gas fired UBT temper furnaces for their headquarters facility.

Peters’ Heat Treating, Inc., located in Meadville, Pennsylvania, announced that the new furnace equipment, purchased from industrial furnace manufacturer AFC-Holcroft, will be integrated into an existing complete UBQ furnace line purchased previously from the Michigan-based Aichelin Group company. This equipment acquisition increases the gross load capacity of the existing line by an additional 3,500 pounds and will expand the company’s ability to service the aerospace, automotive, medical and energy sectors. Peters’ Heat Treating has also invested in a new 1400°F gas fired UBT temper furnace for one of their three locations in the tristate region, in McKean, Pennsylvania.

Historically known for their specialization in vacuum heat treating, the company has made significant investments in furnace technology to expand their production capability and gain entry into new markets. This latest UBQ furnace will interface with existing tempering furnaces, spray-dunk washer, automated transfer car and an EZ™ Series endothermic gas generator and other companion equipment. With the AFC-Holcroft equipment expansion, Peters’ has dramatically increased their capacity for oil hardening and carburizing. Processing capabilities include vacuum processing, neutral hardening, carburizing, gas nitriding, cryogenics, annealing, stress relieving, black oxide coating, induction processing, sandblasting, integrated straightening, and metallurgical testing.

AICHELIN Group Acquires AFC-Holcroft, a US Market Leader in Heat Treatment Solutions

On July 12, 2016, the Austrian AICHELIN Group acquired US-based Atmosphere Group, holding company of AFC-Holcroft. The two groups are a perfect fit: Both are leading market players with a long-standing history and state-of-the-art technologies and services in the industrial area of heat treatment solutions. AICHELIN Group – with its manufacturing companies AICHELIN, EMA Indutec, SAFED, BOSIO and Noxmat – is a leading provider of high-quality plants and systems. AFC-Holcroft is the US market leader in the production of industrial furnace equipment for ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Other main companies of Atmosphere Group are Atmosphere Heat Treating and Austemper Inc. Until now, Atmosphere Group was privately held. The parties agreed not to disclose details and the price of the transaction.

The acquisition complements the geographic presence of AICHELIN Group and strengthens the Group’s overall market position as one of the leading global heat treatment groups. The AICHELIN Group is now the largest provider of Atmosphere furnaces world-wide. With a strong presence in Europe, North America and Asia, the joint annual turnover generated by 1,100 employees amounts to over EUR 195 million (2015). The group operates a network in 32 countries.

“This is a major step in AICHELIN Group’s strategy of building a global, dynamic group of companies specializing in heat treatment solutions”, says AICHELIN Group’s CEO Peter Schobesberger. “With AFC-Holcroft as a member of our Group, we further evolve into a truly global company with strong local roots in the most important markets. We have an excellent, complementary geographical footprint and will further strengthen our leading positions.” Bill Disler, CEO of AFC-Holcroft, adds: “AFC-Holcroft celebrates its 100th anniversary this year. With AICHELIN Group as our new owner, we are sure to combine our long-standing traditions with an innovative future. AFC-Holcroft will benefit from being embedded into a family of strong global companies and brands.”

Extended product portfolio and services for customers AICHELIN Group’s business model covers all stages of the lifecycle: From design, engineering, manufacturing and installation at customer sites to comprehensive maintenance and spare part services. By combining the networks of AICHELIN Group and AFC-Holcroft, customers will get the best of two worlds: An enlarged, high quality product portfolio as well as a process innovative, world-wide service network. “Together, we have an ideal position to service our customers in the best possible way. They can benefit from our extended project capabilities and the most reliable technology of three continents. Additionally, we will continue to focus on innovation and exploit all our joint possibilities”, says Schobesberger.

As the next step, a process will start to integrate AFC-Holcroft and its sister companies into AICHELIN Group’s network in the coming months. AFC-Holcroft’s headquarters will remain in Wixom, Michigan. The current top management stays in place and most customers will keep their key account managers.

“We want to play an active role in the consolidation of the heat treatment market. We aim at joint growth and a sustainable profitability, for the benefit of our customers, stakeholders and employees”, closes CEO Schobesberger.
