  1. Foundrax Engineering Products Ltd, global Brinell test specialist, has launched the “BRINscope Duo”, a patent-pending, dual-illumination, hand-held microscope for measuring indentation diameters.
  2. TAV VACUUM FURNACES SPA received an order for a horizontal vacuum heat treatment furnace for a Brazilian company who specializes in different heat treatments (including quenching, cementation, nitriding) for the engineering industry.

Personnel/Company Chatter

  1. Mark Hemsath, former vice president of SECO/VACUUM Technologies LLC, is joining Nitrex’s Heat Treating Services Sales division. He will be taking on the role of vice president of Sales Heat Treating Services, Americas.
  2. Zachary Thomas will be assuming the role of outside sales manager at Solar Atmospheres of Western PA. He will be reporting directly to their sales director, Mike Johnson.
  3. AFC-Holcroft launched “AFC-Holcroft University,” a training program for all employees. This training offers their entire staff, including those in non-technical roles, the opportunity to learn more about the company, products, and technology.
  4. Ipsen is offering on-site Ipsen U courses to accommodate large groups at client facilities. Ipsen U is a course designed to teach heat treatment fundamentals, best practices and new methods.
  5. Rockford Systems, LLC, dba Rockford Combustion Solutions, is broadening its portfolio of offerings to include field service throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico.
  6. Throughput Consulting Inc., a leading Manufacturing Execution and Quality Management System software provider, hired Joe Coleman as its new cyber security officer to assist customers and their vendors in achieving compliance of NIST 800-171, CMMC and DFARS. He will be working with the Bluestreak™ team towards this end.

  1. Nitrex launched their new website to reflect their company’s values and brand.
  2. Solar Atmospheres Greenville, SC facility has been awarded Aerojet Rocketdyne approval, their second aerospace prime approval of 2021.
  3. Berndorf AG, parent company to AFC-Holcroft, graduated its 2020/2021 class of its Berndorf Academy, an exclusive, yearlong management training offered to select employees chosen from the corporation’s global subsidiaries. AFC-Holcroft’s Jason Crook, electrical engineering manager, was one of the graduates.
  4. Newage Testing Instruments announced the launch of its new webshop, www.store.ametekstc.com to shop for hardness testing accessories such as test blocks, indenters, and anvils that can be used with both Newage’s products as well as other Rockwell, Brinell, Vickers, and Knoop hardness testing and microhardness testing systems.
  5. ECM Technologies was recognized as one of the companies who is leading the way towards a better, brighter, greener future. ECM’s ECO Furnace was presented the Green Business Award for accomplishing a cleaner, safer, and more efficient operation in the heat treat industry; more specifically the environment benefits from a low carbon footprint (energy consumption is minimal and CO2 emissions are near 80% less).

Aerojet Rocketdyne Auctions Heat Treat Equipment at California Facility, Sets Sights on Arkansas Expansion

Advanced large-capacity heat treating equipment and vacuum furnaces, as well as rare aerospace equipment, are listed among the items that were auctioned in December 2019, as part of the closure of an industrial facility belonging to a California-based rocket and missile propulsion manufacturer.

Aerojet Rocketdyne began downsizing its operations and holdings in Rancho Cordova, California, in 2017 and expanding its manufacturing footprint in Arkansas. Machinery Marketing International (MMI), in collaboration with Hilco Industrial, was secured to partner with Aerojet in the downsizing of assets, and a large industrial auction of Aerojet Rocketdyne manufacturing equipment that occurred in December.

The auction of the 800,000-plus sq ft manufacturing facility features advanced large-capacity heat and vacuum treating, composite structure forming, CNC machining, quality assurance equipment, and more. Key assets falling under the auctioneer’s gavel include an Abar Ipsen HR-120x152VC 6-bar MetalMaster horizontal vacuum compression braze furnace and a Grieve HB-500 500°F electric oven.

“We are proud to have been selected as an asset disposition partner for this closure,” said Paul Zimmer, CEO of Machinery Marketing International. “This facility features rare aerospace equipment including vacuum furnaces and heat treatment machinery, composite manufacturing equipment, large scale turret lathes, and a wide selection of machine tools. The scale and quality of this equipment makes this auction a unique opportunity for buyers.”

The live auction will take place at 2001 Aerojet Road Rancho Cordova, California 95742 on Tuesday, December 10, at 10:00 AM (Pacific Time) with additional online webcast bidding hosted by Bidspotter. Lot preview and machinery inspection will occur Monday, December 9, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM (Pacific Standard Time), or earlier by appointment.

Aerospace Manufacturer Expands Metal Alloy AM Capabilities, Acquires AM Services Provider

A technology-based manufacturer of aerospace and defense parts and systems recently expanded its capability to develop and produce metal alloy additive manufacturing parts for aerospace and power systems through the acquisition of AM provider which services the aerospace, defense, medical, and industrial markets.

Aerojet Rocketdyne Holdings, Inc. has acquired 3D Material Technologies (3DMT) from ARC Group Worldwide, Inc., complementing Aerojet Rocketdyne’s industry-leading capabilities to develop and produce metal alloy additive manufacturing parts for aerospace propulsion and power systems. Aerojet Rocketdyne has qualified production parts for the RL10 and RS-25 liquid rocket engines and continues to develop and demonstrate the benefits of additive manufacturing for its hypersonic propulsion systems.

“The addition of 3DMT’s capacity and expertise in metal alloy additive manufacturing expands our range of products and services in the space and defense markets,” said Eileen Drake, CEO and president of Aerojet Rocketdyne. “As we look to the future, additive manufacturing will continue to play an important role in lowering costs and production timelines.   • A Berwick, Pennsylvania, machining company which offers heat treating among its services was recently acquired by precision machining provider DPMS, based in Santa Clara, California. K-Fab Inc. operates a 22,000-sq.-ft. precision machine shop that manufactures parts for the aerospace, defense, and semiconductor sectors.
  • GKN Powder Metallurgy recently announced a strategic collaboration with HP Inc, becoming the first to deploy the just-launched HP Metal Jet, a groundbreaking binder jetting technology, into its factories to produce functional metal parts for auto and industrial leaders, including Volkswagen and Wilo, and for companies around the world.
  • Joshua Farrell recently took over the Operations Manager position at Mid-South Metallurgical, based in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

Equipment Chatter

  • California-based Delta H Technologies, LLC, recently delivered a commissioned dual chamber aerospace heat treating system — the largest and most advanced to date — to a leading U.S. military aircraft manufacturer. Both chambers are certified for heating parts up to 1200°F and capable of solution heat treating, aging, annealing aluminum, stress relieving titanium and ferrous castings, weldments, and aging of PH stainless steel.
  • An auto parts manufacturer recently received shipment of a customized oxidation nitriding furnace, manufactured by JGEF Furnace, a vacuum heat treating  equipment supplier with U.S. offices in San Francisco, California. The pit furnace, which has useful dimensions of 43.3 inches (1,100 mm) in diameter x 70.9 inches (1,800 mm) high, has a maximum temperature rating of 1292°F (700°C). The goal for this project was to represent an advanced solution for metallic parts. The furnace includes an advanced oxidation system that ensures the workpieces are preheated in a controlled oxidizing atmosphere and guarantees corrosion resistance, which in turn facilitates nitrogen uptake and growth of the nitride compound layer.
  • A large capacity fastener hardening furnace system has been commissioned by a tier one automotive supplier based in Detroit, Michigan. CAN-ENG Furnaces International Ltd has been contracted to design and commission the system for the company, which offers heat treating among its services.
  • A large capacity SECO/Warwick vacuum furnace was delivered to U.K.-based Wallwork Heat Treatment company just before Christmas.

Kudos Chatter

  • America Makes recently announced the awardees of a Directed Project Opportunity on advancing additive manufacturing (AM) post-processing techniques (AAPT), funded by the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), Materials and Manufacturing Directorate, Manufacturing and Industrial Base Technology Division. Awardee #1 is Arizona State University, in conjunction with Quintus Technologies; Phoenix Heat Treating, Inc.; and Phoenix Analysis & Design Technologies, Inc. Awardee #2 is ASTM International Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence (AM CoE), a collaborative, which includes ASTM International, Auburn University, EWI, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Wichita State University – National Institute for Aviation Research (NIAR), in conjunction with Quintus Technologies, Carpenter Technologies Corporation, Aerojet Rocketdyne, Rolls Royce Corporation, Honeywell Aerospace, GE Aviation, and Raytheon.
  • Paulo recently announced the recent addition of the St. Louis Division to the approved heat treat sources list for General Motors High-Pressure Die Casting Die Insert Material. The approval list references AWQ49658 which includes the heat treatment specifications for Hot Work Tool Steels for GM High-Pressure Die Casting applications.  The St. Louis Division joins Paulo’s Nashville plant on the approval list, which includes only seven approved locations in the US. AWQ49657 covers approved material providers, heat treaters, and testing labs. Paulo is the only US source with two facilities on the list.
  • Nominations are open for the ASM HTS/Surface Combustion Emerging Leader Award, which recognizes an outstanding early-to-midcareer heat treating professional whose accomplishments exhibit exceptional achievements in the heat treating industry. The award was created in recognition of Surface Combustion’s 100-year anniversary in 2015. The winning young professional will best exemplify the ethics, education, ingenuity, and future leadership of our industry.
